Lol i got this exact same argument when asking how to get my strut bar off... 50% of SAUWA said jack it up, the other 50% said don't jack it up. Never got it off in the end lol, tried both ways but those nuts won't move =[

EITHER WAY.

Best way is to get some INOX penetrant, but any good penetrant will do. get a coarse bastard file and cut two sides onto the nut if you can, then bust the vicegrips (as said by the harbinger of sand-dune doom) on as tight as humanly possible (may require about two or three CNUA's or 'Chuck Norris Units of Awesome's), and try tightening the nut a little bit before you loosen. doesn't need to be far. if it doesn't go any tighter, get more inox, let it sit in, then battle it out. may need breaker bar like was said before also.

if all else fails - bolt cutters off of the strut top, and worry about fixing that later.

use a file..

1.mark two paralell lines on the nut. enough to just square it up

2.file to the marked lines

3.crc the bolt end removing all metal shavings

4.use appropriate spanner to remove nut

another trick if you can is to run a hacksaw cut down one side of the nut close to the thread removing part of the nut, then a little tap with a chisel down the cut, this will destress the nut and make it easy to remove, i've done hundreds of them working on maintenance, Good Luck!
