Since when was there a law brought in saying you had to have 3rd party?

Umm well when you register your car, included as part of that fee is CTP (compulsary third party) insurance.

So if you drive a car, you have CTP, unless you drive an unregistered car, or you drive whilst disqualified from driving -which is highly illegal mainly for the reason that you dont have CTP.

And if you damage property, or a hit a person or have any accident you are 100% liable for everthing (and often would never be able to pay it off).

So i believe you are actually refering to the TAC insurance which i believe is not third party it covers you and other drivers for personal injury only.

I believe you could drive V8's on the early P plate laws? I did and it was legal, as long as it was under the power to weight ratio.

The 33 gts-t in question would be illegal IMO regardless of any paperwork as the system goes by the factory power and factory weight, not to mention the illegal mods.

The thing I would be worried about though is that any insurance company that knows what it is doing (i.e all of them), would not pay out a claim, or cover you in any circumstance should you have an accident driving a car that your not allowed to drive. Not sure about the compulsary 3rd party either.

edit - But they will obviously insure you and take your money.

i drove a skyline r33 gts-t on my p's under the old laws never had an issue with power to weight i thought it came in under the kw per tonne. it had a big front mount and some other more discreet things never had a drama for power to weight maybe the 30 or so cops who stopped me on my p's just didnt worry about it 5 years ago :P

What i am referring to is the compulsary third party insurance that is covered in your rego (maybe it was renamed to TAC insurance)

- and yes for personal injury

but either way it is not the same as the similarily named 'third party' / 'third party fire theft' type insurances you can purchase.

Ok it looks like it has been renamed very recently to TAC charge. I think you will find it is still referred to as Compulsory third Party -alot of companys offer alternate CTP when you goto rego your car you can elect to use them. Car dealerships off 'free CTP ' etc as incentives.

- It's the same thing.

It is not 3rd party. Just personal injury, that is it.

It does not cover for instance the other persons car, other property etc.

I cannot see how that has much to do with 3rd party. It's been TAC charge/insurance for years now. I've always called it that.

CTP Insurance

Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance is a type of insurance policy. CTP insurance provides you with protection from a damages claim in the event that you or the person driving your car are the driver at fault in a motor vehicle accident. It provides compensation to the person that was injured or killed. It is called a Green Slip simply because it is green in colour.

This is from moneystuff.net.au ;

Compulsory Third Party (CTP) or green slip insurance (NSW)

In NSW, compulsory third party (CTP) insurance covers you if your car kills or injures another person. The driver of a car that is involved in a car accident is covered if they are not at fault and if the accident involved another car and it's driver was at fault.

CTP insurance must be paid before the car can be registered. When you pay this insurance you are given a stamped "green slip". This is your receipt and proof that you have paid for this insurance.

Most insurance companies offer CTP insurance and the cost will depend on the:

  • age of the youngest driver
  • type of car

The Motor Accidents Authority (MAA) has a website at www.maa.nsw.gov.au that provides information on CTP insurance and how much it can cost.

Transport Accident Commission Charge (TAC) (Victoria)

If you live in Victoria, a Transport Accident Commission Charge (TAC) is a compulsory third party insurance which you pay at the time of registration. If the car you are driving kills or injures another person and it is your fault, TAC will cover their costs.

If you are the driver of a car involved in an accident and it is your fault, you are also covered if you suffer injury.

The TAC fee is calculated according to the type of car, its use and its garaged location.

Make sure you include these costs in your budget.

That is a link to a gov site on CTP from the ACT.

Thats an article on insurance in general, mentioning victoria's comulsary "third party personal" insurance (which would be TAC charge)

There are more sites but yeah..

Cleary the 'third party' is the other person involved in an accident not at fault? (or the reverse of that?)

I'm not trying to be argumentative but it really surprises me that you guys have never heard of it at CTP before seeing your obviously knowledgable guys.

So what you are pointing out is that it is CTP in nsw and a TAC charge in victoria, being that this thread is in the victorian section then we are talking about the TAC charge.

Now that we have established what had already been established what was the point?

What im pointing out buddy is that the TAC charge is the name given to the compulsory third party personal injury insurance in victoria, or rather, the name they give to the charge (and that charge is for the insurance),

and it was in response to your original comment - "Since when was there a law brought in saying you had to have 3rd party?"

Since forever, you just knew the name of the charge on the rego slip .. 'tac charge' (what did you think it was for???? )

and you were also mistaking what i said for third party (property) insurance, which is offered by insurance companies and is not compulsory.

The term third party does not even apply to the tac insurance as third party (as in third party fire and theft) covers some one else when you f**k up but does not cover you, whereas the tac insurance is there to cover any personal injury regardless of whether the other person has rego (although i could be wrong on that one, thankfully never had to make a claim).

And yes, when i hear the term third party i assume its something through an insurance company, as oppposed to the TAC charge which i have always known as TAC insurance, not compulsory third party.

Actually... you've only pointed that out now.

Earlier you said:

... included as part of that fee is CTP (compulsary third party) insurance.

The way it is worded there makes no mention of CTP Personal Injury. Just CTP. (different)

It would also imply (as you make reference to property damage), that CTP covers this. It does not.

No-one is mistaking, you were unclear.

What other states call it is utterly irrelevant AFTER you've made a very unclear statement.

I'm well aware CTP is the Green Slip for NSW. However this is Victoria, we speak Victorian. Same as Terrance and Philip speak Canadian!

You simply say, Compulsory Third Party.

Leaving off the Personal Injury part you might not think is important, but its the entire essence of the point.

Very important to state what the CTP is actually for/covering.

End of the day, its called TAC Insurance, had been for at least 8 years 100%, so it is not a recent change as you also said.

Yes i acknowledge i made a mistake in my first post saying it also covered property,

As for saying ctp instead of ctp personal injury, i do not believe they are different things, as ctp or compulsory third party 'personal injury' is the only form of compulsory insurance in Australia so thus compulsary third party would automatically refer to personal injury..

But yes i should have clarified it =]

End of the day, there is a third party insurance that is compulsary. and yes its for personal injury, and yes its you are charged under the name TAC charge.

    • I also just ordered some Frankenstein bolts and side mounts to fit a hard top Just in case I do find one, basically so it doesn't need to be fixed to the car with only the front latch.......and then gaffa tape to keep it in place for the RTN journey from wherever I get it
    • If your temps are fine now, you probably won't have any issues with where your vents are as they don't look right up at the windscreens high pressure area, so any differences when giving it the beans for extended happy laps would be minimal, but, they should vent heaps when stuck in traffic  Much like how that reverse cowl on my SS let "visible" heat out when stationary, but, because it was basically at the windscreen my coolant temps on the Hwy actually raised because air was being fed into it at speed (110kph), to only come back down to around 90° when I got off the Hwy And your 100% correct about the NC currently not needing vents, but, if I was to add a turbo, and a oil cooler and intercooler in front of the condenserand radiator, and then take it to the track???? It is apparently a recommend requirement if I don't want to worry about coolant or oil temp issues, but, any of the above are possible scenarios, over time As it sits now, with the triple pass radiator and stock air conditioning system, I have absolutely no issues with either temps or air conditioning efficiency, I've been basically daily driving thie car for the last month, both on the Hwy, and peak hour, bumper to bumper traffic, but, that's pretty much expected from basically a standard engine  Talking about no issues daily driving, it was 39° the other day and I was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on the M5 and then M7, with the top down, and with the air conditioning blowing nice cold air on my feet, balls, and face, well, there was one issue, my head and arms got pretty sun burnt Note to self: leave a hat and sunscreen in the car for such days 🤣
    • I would agree, unless you need something specific to the HV motor/battery side repaired or investigated, any mechanic will be able to perform normal services, but if you prefer, maybe look for a mechanic who regularly services/repairs Nissans, the VQ engines are pretty common in the Nissan lineup.  Sorry, I can't make any suggestions, I don't live in Vic.
    • Some of them keep working fine. 9 out of 10 of them end up causing an absolute misery bleeding the system and get thrown on the workshop floor in a tantrum and never thought about again because they were never really needed and just added crap to the car that we could have done without. Same-same with HICAS, A-LSD, and various other stupidities that over eager 10x engineers thought we had to have.
    • Not required but appreciated. Super Coppermix Twin even the non-competition model feels like the pedal is noticeably heavier than stock which was pretty well judged IMO. I'll be swapping in the Nismo operating cylinder soon to see how that feels.  Personally I haven't felt anything that justifies replacing the damping loop, at least compared to more modern stuff where the clutch delay valve is actually quite noticeable.
