Cost Of A Tune

Hey guys,

I got a rough estimate for how much tuning is going to cost me. I was quoted that it would take about 7-8 hours @ 140/hr to tune my car. I have a Microtech LT12S with Sard 850cc injectors. The ecu already has a base map. Do you think this is a bit much? What ECU do you have, where did you get it tuned and how much did it cost for the tune? Cheers

Also just in case this comes up I am in Townsville. So anyone reading this from north QLD PLEASE help out. I would like info from other people too not just north QLD people

Mods: If this is already a thread I am sorry and please point me in the right direction.

Cheers

i was charged $1200 for a full tune and installation of my HKS Fcon Pro ecu, was meant to be around the $1k mark but then had to change to colder plugs and we had alot of screwing around with other components affecting the tune so paid him some more for labour but overall im happy with wat i got in the end. this is as BD4's by the way. Tunehouse now also tune HKS ecu's as well :P

I live in mackay. I can pull 300rwkw, and good road use, not just a full power tune, out of a properly set up car with a power FC or Vipec in just under 3 hours. This is obviously when someone brings me the car with all the things I have asked for sorted (New fuel pump, removed After market FPR, new plugs and coil packs if needed, and any other things sorted to support that power.)

Microtech ECUs are absolutely shithouse to tune I might add, and they are not something to want to have anyway, as you're going to have the car back every 3 months needing a retune, for a significant amount of money. If I were you, I'd sell it, get a Vipec or Power FC, and get a decent tune in it.

You're more than welcome to travel to me if you want a tune - But I will not tune a microtech. I simply don't like them.

Also, I tune cars for love, not money. I only charge to maintain my gear and buy extra stuff that will help the next tune - Not to run a workshop, or take money from someone.

not everytime someones charges you lots of money its going to be a good tune, just make sure your going somewhere your not being roughted.

Exactly right, seen this many times.

PFC tuned at Autotech (Southport, Gold Coast). Cost me close to 1k for installation of pfc and boost controller kit, 4wd dyno tune at $220 per hour.

Was the $1k installation AND the powerfc, or just the installation costs? It took me 45 mins to install a PowerFC D Jetro and boost controller kit into someones car one day.

Sorry for the confusion. Its close to 1k all up and that includes the installation of pfc and boost controller kit with a 4wd dyno tune. Probably 3-4hrs worth in tuning I remember.

The microtech's are avaerage ecu's but they are also the simplest and fastest to tune (playing the microtech, drag the line game). Average tune time for a microtech is far less than a pfc orhaltech etc.

Average cost would be $600-1000 no more. (for example on average we charge $600)

Look that is all well and good... however...

Vipec/PFC both have pre-formatted maps with the cold start populated etc etc. All the important/hard to configure things - made much easier

Far as i know the Microtech requires this all to be done manually from virtual scratch and so on, which would take a considerably longer amount of time.

To do cold start is a pain in the ass from all reports.

My first tune ended up costing ~$3000 after losing the ringlands off two cylinders.

Wish I would of payed a bit more money and took it to someone more competent in the first place...

I have learnt 2 things about tunes; Will travel for a known good tuner, will pay $$$$ for a known good tuner.

My Microtech was tuned by CRD, and the tune on it is bloody abysmal (in fairness it was also taken there by the previous owner). 18L/100 fuel consumption, new plugs every 10k and have to start it 3 times when it's cold.

Out of interest, how much is it to 'clean' up a tune like that?

Yes Phil it is getting to me you bastard. Im about to go round to the mechanics to have a talk to them now. That quote was from Aitkenvale auto and dyno. I understand good tunes cost money but Phil has been there and so has a couple of friends of his and apparently they charge too much and charge you for stuff they don't do or they do and don't do it properly. Like I said Im going in to see them now. They haven't called me back since last Tuesday and I have rang them every day to get the phone answering lady say "He's currently busy at the moment but he will call you back". I dont mind paying the money if I know that is how much time and effort they are actually putting into the car. I hate paying for rubbish. Ok Im ending this rant short or I will never get to the mechanics. Cheers!

Thanks for all the replys :O Also if anyone knows someone in Townsville that does mod plates I would also be interested. Will keep you posted with what the mechanic says......See how big my bill is......
