Hey guys, about a week ago I noticed a slight grind from the rear passenger brake when slowing down slowly, gradually over a few days this got worse and more frequent, i also noticed a slight squeek from that same wheel while driving. I had just put 17"s on and thought it might have something to do with that. But then yesterday the grinding all of a sudden was much worse, louder, longer and more frequent. Then today it's incredibly loud and happens when ever I brake.

Had a look at the brakes and rotors, rotor has a lot of fresh scrapes that feel rough when i run my fingers over them.

Now I don't know much about cars, less about brakes. But it looks like the rear passenger has no brake pad where as the rear driver appears to have a 2-3mm. Needless to say I'm not driving it at all atm, but today I'll ring around to get it fixed.

Can anyone tell me how big of a job this is likely to be? Ball park costs? Anything else it might be? Suggestions of a good place to get it fixed in Adelaide?

Thanx guys ^_^

>>Sam

It's not unusual for brake pads to wear at different rates. Get the car to any good mechanic to have new pads installed. You might even be able to find a mobile mechanic to come to you - check Yellow Pages.

Hey mate I once got a little rock stuck between the end of the pad and rotor that mad a horrible sound as well as scratch the sh#t out of my rotor! Have a look around to see if anything is stuck, but that just scratched the top part of the rotor as the wheel was spinning. It does sound like you have minimal amount of pad left.

As far as cost goes, you can get pretty cheap pads or spend a little more for "better" ones. They will need to machine your rotors aswell. They shouldnt charge you more than about $300-$400 for all 4 pads, rotors machined, new fluid and labour, I wouldnt think.....

Places (in SA) charge a shit load to remove and machine discs, if you take them off yourself it's normally around 29-39 bucks a disc.

Hit up gsl rally sports, iirc it was $120 for an axle's worth of qfm a1rm brake pads. Should be able to get the whole lot in for under $220ish.

I wouldn't know how to, and if I did I wouldn't be able to drive to GSL :)

Midas pt adelaide is 30 seconds from my house so I think even if they were charging a shit load more I would still have to go there to minimize more damage

Im about done with my Skyline, second set of speakers melted today on a 30 degree day..

Nothing is simple with this skyline, nothing at all...

Hey Sam, if u want, i can change the pads for u and organise the rotors to be machined to. Done heaps of changes on cars if u dont mind. Just pay for the new pads, machining and $50 to me and i'll do it.

Hey-ho Luke thanx a lot man, i already got them done at Midas. Was pretty urgent and Midas pt adelaide was seriously a 1 minute drive from my house ^_^ $139 wasn't to bad for rear brakes I don't think :ninja: Rotor didn't need machining so I was a happy chappy cuz I had my $20 left for dinner that night LOL!

New problem, damaged my rear shelf putting it back in with speakers so one speaker sags, its terminals touch the body of the car which seems to be causing static and makes the cd player cut out lol..

wtb in tact rear shelf in SA ^_^

    • Welcome back to the scene! Godzilla Motorsports were well regarded back in the day.  My GT-R had work done there prior to my ownership.   SRS (Street Race Solutions) in Toowoomba worth a look.  They've built some pretty wild Skylines. Their YouTube channel is comedic to watch!  I'm sure they're all on the glass BBQ but they get shit done! 🤣
    • Hard to say what the extra connector is, it looks a bit like a coax type connector, so possibly a separate radio/GPS antenna, or even another camera input?  The V37 series (including the Q50), did go through a model refresh in 2020, since Australia didn't get any Q50s newer than 2019, we didn't get any of the refreshed models, so there could also be other unexpected problems to overcome to swap an older Q50 head unit into a new model V37. There probably aren't too many people around that have made these sorts of changes to a Q50/V37, so you might end up being the first if you do decide to go ahead. ACP is Apple Car Play and AA is Android Auto, they are roughly the same thing for the 2 major phone operating systems (Apple's iOS and Android), it allows you to connect your phone and access a number of your phone applications on your car system.  With Nav apps included, so you could use google maps/Waze or whatever your favourite navigation app is, instead of using the built in navi system.  I think this would be a better solution if it is only Navigation that you are looking as swapping the head unit for. GPS signals are the same around the globe as the GPS satellites continuously circle the globe, but it is the head unit that doesn't allow you to load Australian maps, or at least no-one had made an Australian map that will load up on the JDM head unit. Regarding the TV standards, I assume you are referring to the AV inputs?  I haven't ever tried to use them, Japan used a slightly modified version of the US NTSC system, and Australia uses PAL for composite video, that said, I wouldn't be surprised if a video input could work with either system.  That is mostly irrelevant here though, unless you plan to use those inputs for something?
    • If you've got bucket loads of $. Go single. If not, just upgrade the twins, Garrett -9's or whatever the current equivalent is for a healthy 350awkw and leave it at that. Will probably still cost you 10k to do in this day and age.
