Hi guys/gals

Yup, I'm from the States. hope I am not bringing your real estate value down by joining.

Just a little about me.

Been building and racing cars since 1988 mostly Chevy and Ford v8 with much success, recently jumped on the Nissan bandwagon after seeing what kind of power can be made with Nissan turbo engines.

I cant legally get my hands on a skyline here in the states but I can drop an RB25det into a 240 SX hatchback (91 model) and hope for similar praise.

so far I have the car, an imported RB25det with about 40,000 kilometers on it. stock for now. I got a new Apexi fc on the way (just a few more days it comes in from Japan) wide band A/F from Titan (Innovative) w lambda and logging software/laptop display. I have acquired the AEM boost gauge and a BEE-R rev limiter, got the aluminum radiator, fmic, oil catch can, motor mounts and cross member made for the swap as well as the upgraded fuel pump. goal is to go .8 bars at first (10.4 PSI to start) will get a tune once dropped in and running. hoping for 200 rwkw (250 or so hp at the wheels) not sure on that math yet. will take me a while to get out of the habit of USA measurements. your forum looks like a wealth of information and my good "mate" sent me here to get started.

I currently restore old muscle cars from the 60's but am so amazed at the raw power squeezed out of these aluminum headed inline 6 cyls.

I plan on learning a lot and hope to swap good information. I am going to document the entire build start to finish every step every problem every completed goal.

any input or suggestions will be greatly appreciated .

1991 240 sx hatchback rb25det 5 speed stock. (for now)

Welcome!

You sound like you've got a lot going on there! what old muscle cars have you restored? You've come to the right place, plenty of info here on your RB25DET, and I'm sure there'd be plenty of interest to follow your build :)

68 mustang challenger, two 66 Chevelle Malibus ,68 Chevelle Malibu I will try to post some pictures. I love all cars that give me that "feeling" we all get it it when we spool up or hit 8k on the tach or maybe hit that peg at the end of the speedo.. right now its a RB25DET in a 2700 lb car that will be 2500 when I am done and that will make for a fun ride I hope.

found the car. 1991 240 rolling chassis very very cheap less than a mentionable amount.post-68803-1261286308_thumb.jpg

Found the engine in Canada with transmission (5sp rwd) all wiring maf and ecu.post-68803-1261286607_thumb.jpg

After a few beers and a smoke I decided to drop it in..the "drop in" took exactly 2hrs and 13 minutes a far cry from my normal v8 jobs taking 30 minutes to 1 hr. It was very tight I almost had the RB25 standing on end to get it in there. post-68803-1261286926_thumb.jpg

If you don't mark your wires you will drink so much that you cant get to the store to get more beer..and that sucks. Luckily I marked the wires and was able to make several beer runs later that night. (it is still a headache..took me forever to figure out I had a series 2..slightly different approach on the wiring..no igniter should have been dead giveaway but I thought it was just missing.post-68803-1261287194_thumb.jpg

I was so pumped I moved a 66 Chevelle out into the rain to play with a Nissan. Thats how impressed I am with that rb25det.post-68803-1261287659_thumb.jpg

I have got the AEM boost Guage and the Power FC from Apexi,Titan (innovative) wideband LC1 ,cyberdyne oil press, oil temp, water temp, I managed a BEE-R rev limiter and an apexi RSM..upgraded to a walbro fuel pump 255lph. removed the cat and have a full length down pipe.going to do a nice exhaust note I hope. In the morning we will be finishing up the wiring and cranking over for the first time..

The purpose of this car is to have fun..not to look pretty (yet). If I max out my fun factor in this little diamond in the rough I will make it look good as well..then I will upgrade everything..

Many people ask me why I do this..my reply is always the same..

"thats what I do" and my number 1 rule is.."If you do what you enjoy you will be good at it."

It is always fun to take an ugly 3-5 thousand dollar fun car and go tear up some 30-40k sportscars..I am the first one in my area to do this swap..Im just going in head first..why not..

    • Not R7R. Meant to type R&R, obviously enough.
    • Bugger "making it look stock". I put one conventional internally fused Hella relay behind each globe. I just pulled the plugs off the back of the globes and built new loom segments with male and female plug parts to match up to the original loom and the globe, and used the original power wires to each globe coming from the switch through the original loom plug to trigger the relays. Ran a big fat (also separately fused) power wire across the front of the car to feed all the relays. It's as ugly as f**k, but it is wedged down between the headlight and battery on the RHS and the airbox and headlight on the LHS, and no-one ever looks in my engine bay, and on the odd occasion that they do I simply give no f**ks for what they think. Fully reversible - not that you'd ever want to. For f**k's sake. It's a Skyline. They made million of the bloody things. We've been crashing them into roadside furniture for 30 years now. There is a negative side effect to putting relays on the headlights. The coil current is too little to properly clean the contacts in the switches and they get blacked up and you have to open them up every couple of years and clean them manually. I have 25 years of experience on this point.
    • I was poking through the R34 wiring diagrams vs R33 and noticed that the R34 has proper headlight relays while the R33 is like the R32 and sends full headlight power through the headlight switch. I'm not afraid of wiring but I really would like to do this in a way that looks OEM (clipping into open positions on the OEM relay box) and also unlike the factory wiring which interlocks the high beam and low beam on the halogen series 1 GTR headlights I want to make it such that turning on the high beams keeps the low beams on as well. Any advice on how to locate the specific connectors + crimp terminals + relays I need? I was thinking one NO relay for low beams and another for combined high + low running off the factory high beam headlight connector. I don't really want to splice into a crusty old probably discontinued factory harness so fully reversible is my goal here.
    • Pretty sure they run the same engine as the Q50 hybrid which specifies 95 RON.  I ran 98 in mine for a while, but it made no difference in performance or economy, so I have been using 95 for the last few years.  I have never hit 6.0L/100km, but have returned mid to high 6 on the highway.  Being a hybrid, fuel economy is a lot more dependant on how you drive it.  At 110km/h, mine never goes into EV mode on the highway, so returns closer to 7.5L/100. urban driving can return low 8s if you are careful or over 10 if you are a bit more enthusiastic on the throttle.
    • About a quarter of what you want to do. It's only R7R, not R&dismantle&replaceparts&reassemble&R. ? It is stock. I already told you, you will NOT have broken those. It's f**king 4th gear for Christ's sake. You just chipped the teeth off.
