Epa Db Test Question

I did a search through the EPA threads but did not find the info i was looking for - yes it may well be in there but i dont have time right now to read through every page (specific searches had no luck too).

I just wanted to know, how far away the microphone is when they test the 'loudness' of your exhaust.

Because i downloaded this cool decibel app on my iphone, and yeah when i fired my car up it peaked to 96fb ..(illegal obviously), but that was with the phone about a foot away from the exhaust, and it then stayed pretty flat at 92db.

Upon moving to about 2 metres away it was sitting at around 88db which is legal. Revving it obviously made it high again, but yeah, just wondering the distance of the mic for the test?

they test noise on skylines at about 4500rpm. max allowed at 4.5krpm is 90db mine got tested from about a foot away and i got 89.94db with a 3.5 inch exhaust but damn good rear muffler

You are Syd - its different there, therefore inncorrect info

RB25 - 4700rpm - 90dB. The meter is less than 1m from the exhaust outlet.
