Do You Get More Attention With Your Wider Wheels? 9-10 Inch

Hi guys,

Bought some 18" rims for my r32 a while ago, 8.5 front and 9.5 rear. The rears stick out a bit which I like the look of but the tyre shop has got me second guessing whether to put them on. I didn't realise that it's unroadworthy for wheels to stick out. So wondering what sort of attention if any, you guys get. Everything else is stock and I don't hoon or drive crazy, just to work and stuff.

Am I just being vein by putting them on and risking it?

what tyres u running? sticking out will get you attention and if you have stretched tyres be warned it wont end well! its the tyre shops job to tell you its not roadworthy.

having said that ive got 18x10 sticks out a fair bit they were far more worried about stretched tyre, perhaps roll your guards? how much is it sticking out, post pics 9.5" should be too bad really.

aslong as the top of the tyre is inside the guard, they dont really hassle you.. their problem is that if you run over or hit someone and they roll down the side and hit the top of the tyre they can be sucked/pushed under the car.. so whether its alot of neg camber, stretched tyres, or flared/pumped guards.. you shouldnt need to worry much.. just dont be caught doing anything silly eh?

if you see the big 4wds with their chunky as tyres sticking 3 inches out of the guards you can understand why... if you rolled down the guard off the bonnet the tyre would catch you and drag you down instead of bouncing off and hitting the road..

i usually run 235's on a 9.5 inch rim and this is within the tyre size range for this size wheel.. only just though.. so i just figured there wasnt really anything that they could do and ran with that.

dont be fooled into thinking that its highly illegal and a death trap... this just isnt the case.. soo many people on here run stretched tyres and most sit out of the guards a little, and i never heard any of them complaining of being dead.

There's that... and also the problem of picking up road debris (stones etc) and projecting them forward from the top of the tyre into oncoming traffic.

The rears only stick out about 2cm and should fit nicely under the guards with 245/40 tyres. (Wheels came with 275/40 and b-u-l-g-e)

From what I've researched the 245/40's are a good size. I do actually want some performance and am not just putting them on to be fully sik.

I might try a different shop and get them to put the new tyres on but I'll put the wheels on the car myself. Last tyre shop made me feel stupid and asked me if I had even tried them on the car. Meh, maybe I'm just being too sensitive.

Got any pics? How far out are they sticking? If they're flush you'll generally get away with it, unless the cop is having a bad day or knows that there's more to the wheel modification restrictions than diameter.

I didn't realise that it's unroadworthy for wheels to stick out.

Did you realise that it is also unroadworthy to have the wheels 1" wider than the widest stock wheel without an engineering certificate? Or offsets 13mm lower than the stock wheels? Some of the more clued-in cops check these numbers too.

Yeah, but most of them are idiots. I've seen plenty of tyre shops recommend illegal wheels to people.

The legality for an aftermarket tyre is based on the size of the OEM one, not the wheel you're fitting it to.

Tyre manufacturers have recommendations for what sized wheels you should fit certain width tyres onto, but these vary from tyre to tyre.

yes but my question was what is the recommended tyre for a 10" rim not whether a 10" rim was legal for my car or not.

i just want to know is a 255 within recommendations or is it 265s etc. :blink:

235/45 on my 9", but the rims protector doesn't quite protect it due to angle, not a stretched fitment by any means.

so 25mm wider rim, 25mm tyre? = 260mm, I would probably go the 265, 255 would end up starting to look stretched IMO, but that is a guess and there would be better people to comment.

In the tyres I use I wouldn't have a choice, KU36 on a 17x10 I would have a 255, as these are the choices:(from kumho website) 18x10 they would have a 265 not a 255

245/40 R17

255/40 R17

275/40 R17

245/35 R18 XL

265/35 R18 XL

275/35 R18 XL

So you might want to check what sizes are available if you are set on a specific tyre.

your 235/40R18 is 645mmOD

10" options

255/40R18 is 661mmOD

255/35R18 is 636mmOD

265/35R18 is 643mmOD

I never said that you were asking whether a 10" rim was legal or not. Your question was about what kind of tyre is legal for your car. My response was that the legality of the tyre you choose is primarily dependent on the stock tyre, not the wheel its going on.

perhaps comprehension is not a strength of yours.

my question purely related to a 10" rim and what is the suitable tyre for this i didnt ask about the legality of the rim on the car. regardless of the car the tyre must be within the guidlines for that size rim unless im wrong?

The rears have 275/40s on in the photos but will be changing to 245/40s. Better fit under the guards and better handling I think?

      I believe Unimog is the only vehicle that has it (from the manufacturer). I haven't seen aftermarket permanently connected kits, but I haven't looked either.

      Ha ha ha, can't overthink when exhausted... Oh how I wish I had that power! I can be absolutely dead set shot, and my brain will still go "we need a good 3 or 4 hours to just think about everything and anything before you may sleep... My biggest thing is making sure I give myself enough sleep. I don't operate on even 7 hours of sleep! I attempt to give my body 9.5hours sleep a night to be able to function. I don't sleep the whole 9.5, but I need to make sure I offer a big window.       Yep. But typically that's just run a hose down to the tyre while stationary.   Oh and the Unimog will automatically air up and air down tyres from the onboard computer for you too.

      There was a good video somewhere, maybe Kurzgesagt that linked physical activity to ADHD/Anxiety/Insomnia etc. Basically the body WILL spend energy doing something if you don't spend it doing anything physical. It isn't fun, but I personally have noticed I've never been overthinky, or unable to sleep if I'm physically exhausted from doing a lot. The musings around it seem to indicate that this is one of the reasons/mechanism that physical activity improves mental health/wellbeing etc, by more or less not using that 'extra' energy to overthink, be anxious, inflammation, etc. There's also the fact that every obnoxious exerciser ever says it's great and helps which is extremely annoying. Like people who say the same thing about travel being the best thing ever. I mean, they clearly are, but blah. I started doing a LITTLE myself (think 3x15min per week) and honestly did notice the benefits, aiming at life quality when older. Which is sooner than you think. Getting something into your routine that you can actually make a routine has helped me at least. This post brought to you by procrastination between sets.
