What Happens If I Cant Transfer In Time?

Recommended Posts

hey guys, i bought a car almost 2 weeks ago and i havent had enough time to get everything done to the car to make it RWC yet and i think the "14 day" transfer period runs out on saturday!

what happens if i cant transfer it in time??? can i just go get it transferred before i have a rwc certificate??

thanks! :P

transfer it, then 28days for RWC before reg is suspended, i assume you lost the RWC, as it is illegal for a car to be sold without one.

editing for others reference: if car is unregistered, the only time limit you have is the expiration of unreg vehicle permits, and RWC's. you dont need to transfer an unreg car as such, just reg it in your name, providing a receipt for the purchase. You make an appointment at vicroads, take in receipt, RWC, anything else they need then fingers crossed you drive away with plates on.

well no, it was sold without REGO or RWC and i had one of those permit things to drive it home and also to the mechanic etc..

so i can just go transfer it now, and when it is rwc i can get that and also rego done?

By the sounds of it since it was not sold with a RWC and you purchased it UNREG you will have to start the process again.

Get a RWC for the car within the 28 day allowance and then Register it, shouldnt have a problem if you do that.

I purchased a car in VIC last yr and had the hassle of bringing it to NSW and I learnt through that process that neither states communicate in any way with registration. NSW don't accept VIC roadworthy's and such and so on.

I had to basically register the car as if it was unroadworthy and unregistered. Time consuming and costly... Good luck with it mate.

yeah it is very time consuming! because i work all day its hard for me to get to vicroads on time!!

i was just worried, coz i thought i had to transfer it within 14 days even if it has no rego/rwc..

thanks for all the info :P

+1, nice n easy. Just more tedious than anything prolly. Though they will have different laws to be observed when on the road.

though you will need to renew ur permit for an unreg vehicle to drive it places for rwc unless u plan on trailering it.

As you didnt purchase it with REG - It means nothing now.

Essentially you could take 6 months to get it registered and VicRoads will not care.

The 14days ONLY applies for cars with REG

+1 for this. As Nismoid said, because the car was sold with no registration you can take as long as you want in getting a RWC as there is no Rego to be transfered. The only thing you need to worry about is permits that expire so you can drive the car to and from mechanics and vic roads. However you do need to get the vehicle registered within the 28 days of getting your RWC as they expire.
