After 7 months of being off the road after the harmonic balancer broke the snout off the crank, my "street" GTR (Dougs old R33 GTR) is nearly back on the road.I only got to drive this car a couple of times before I broke it, so it's great to see it almost ready after such a long time.

Despite what 'some' people think, I am on a buget like everyone else, so this project took much longer than expected.Parts & machining also held things up, but Mick, Mark & Tyson at Tilbrooks have done an awesome job to bring on this new build & turn this car into a very different animal then before.

When I bought the car from Doug it had twin TD06 turbos, which endowed the car with amazing top end power, but with no boost before 5500rpm & a synchro gearbox, it did not really suit my application of hills driving.

With the engine pulled down, we thought about what we really wanted - & thats

mid range torque, a generous power band, & a gearbox that would compliment the new engine setup without blowing itself to bits.

As the block was already bored & the pistons were showing signs of wear, we decided to start with a new block & crank.O ringed, linehoned, & bored to suit the new wiseco forged pistons, the block was blueprinted, the carillo rods were cracktested & resized, & the crank was knife-edged, nitrided & the whole lot balanced together with the OS triple plate clutchm & new R34 balancer to spin to 10,000rpm.The engine will not be reved that hard, but at least we know it's been done properly.

The race car has had a dry sump fabricated for it, so the modified Trust sump from the race engine seemed a natural addition for this engine, along with the HKS step pro cams & valvetrain ( the OS 3 Litre now has HUGE Tomei cams), the 1000cc injectors( race car stepping up to 12 x 1600cc), and the ARC coolant header tanks system( no point on race engine as radiator going in boot) all perfect hand-me-downs from the 'other' R33.

With additional head porting, extra compression(9.6:1),full metal gasket kit & meticulous preparation by Tyson & Mick, the engine was assembled together with the existing HKS cam gears, GReddy plenum, 85mm single throttle body, Trust pulleys etc etc.

The Trust twin entry intercooler is being replaced by a new custom single entry bar&plate cooler to suit the 800hp garrett roller bearing turbo.Mick has fabricated a killer manifold to mount it & the huge Sub-zero wastegate.

Should make low 400s at the treads on PULP, but with awesome mid range torque.When I'm ready, we will tune it with better fuel for high 400s & then drag race it(just to see what it does as this car has never been raced), but what I am really looking forward to is the raised eyebrows from the two-wheelers up the gorge.

I would never contemplate this setup in a RWD skyline, although it does have an HKS torque split controller for those times when massive sideways action is needed!!! Hence the number plates.

After selling the R34 earlier this year, I am hanging out to get this car on the road. Looks like I'm getting a good Christmas present this year - & it's wrapped in silver.

For those of you saying - yada yada yada, where is the bloody race car?????

It is happening - slowly, but surely. The streeter has taken priority ( & why not - how do you guys feel when u cant drive your cars?), but now that is nearly out of the way we can concentrate on the crazy one. And it has gone crazy.

The "3 litre Streeter" is no more. It is now a full blown race car.

Methanol, 12x1600cc injectors, grout filled block & the hugest turbo you have ever seen are all sitting on the bench waiting to go on. The head can only be described as "off it's face" with custom ferrera valves, 11.6mm cams, +++.

The dry sump is a work of art, & the whole engine should be together by next week.The Holinger is waiting for some new parts(just to be on the safe side), & after the holidays Tilbrooks will be going hammer & tongs to get everything ready

for the 4,6& rotor Nationals.

We won't get time to paint the car, but it will still look OK - so stay tuned.

Huge turbo going on the drag car???? I thought the one going on your street car was bloody huge! (saw you and it at tilbrooks the other day - I was wearing white)

Where do you expect the street turbo to start making boost?

Nah, thats a medium one - the race turbo will support 1300hp (tho we wont be making that much)The 3 litre will probably start boosting around 6500 (will rev it past 10000) but the streeter should come on around 4-4500.

This is still laggy but with an engine built to sustain 9500 rpm will still give a good power band coupled with the close ratio 5 speed dog box.Pfitzner's box is quite streetable compared to the old Trust box & the Holingers, & because it wont need the clutch on changes should keep the RB26 on song & right in the meat of the torque range. Of course it wont be the friendliest car in peak hour traffic, but when there is a gap - look out commuters.

While I'm on the single turbo subject, I have a new tow ute in the garage. I have changed over the SS V8 ute to a new XR6 Turbo ute.I've only started running it in, but am very happy with it so far - looks great in Blueprint with GT wheels & brakes.

But times they are achanging & sometimes u have to move on - or u have no choice 'cause u need the shed space. Ba Bow. :aroused:

The XR6T is 150 odd kilos heavier, has leaf springs rather than the holden's independent, & does not handle as well (but the SS had bilsteins). This one is auto 'cause the ford 5 speed is cr#p & can only tow 1200kg.Power delivery is good, & overall the ute feels very good to drive - love the dash/interior except the poxy cheap door interior door handles.

The modded SS had 235rwkw & 6 speed, so ATM would be quicker than the ford, but not for long - I have already ordered a power upgrade kit for it which should put it in the vicinity of 270-280rwkw & buckets of all important torque.I think the SS would be shamed with this new setup, but I will always like Holdens.(Unashamed V8 head at heart - even if they are fast becoming boat anchors - haha.)

At least the race car will never be late to the Drags.

Warranty? Dont be weak. Never stopped me before.

Short engines are $1800 approx. If it breaks then it wasn't good enough & needs to be made better anyway.

Dont know anyone with a GEN III V8 that hasn't done edit & extractors. The cars can easily be returned to std if there was a problem. The ford should be the same.

Some will be happy with std power, but if u want more u have to take the plunge.

Some new ford turbo owners might wait 3 years till the warranty runs out before modifying - but I am not interested in that - to each his own.

Any ideas on whos powerup you will be using for the XR6 yet? I have heard 'rumours' of 11 sec cars getting around on the east coast with a few bolt ons.

Martin, with an extra 90rwkw, why does the XR6 run slower? Must be alot more to it than a 150kg and 0.14 60 foot times, with the disparity in ETs, it would appear something else isnt right. Also, as the holden has IRS it would be an advantage to the ford?

Far out that street GTR is sounding extreme!, I am very jealous!.

Also the Drag car is sounding very crazy also.

I think I say this for everyone, we all envy you very much :)

I think with everyone getting there cars back on the road this calls for another "Drifty Cruise" !, I am thinking either a Saturday day cruise or a Friday night special and maybe something mid Janurary after everyone has got over xmas & the xmas holidays.

Now I can not promise it will not rain, but looking at this weather we shouldn't have a prob! :).

What do we all think?.. will be good to get all the old school together with the new school.

Nizpro have one in the 10s, and APS have one doing low 11s.

Can't wait to see these cars of Munros in action.

    • Also had a look at the Nissan JP website looks like the 400r has a slightly shorter ratio than than the regular V37 3.133 VS 2.937 which from a guy who has driven both 3.69 vs 4.11 ratios in the S15 is bugger all. Seems that the AUTO Z runs the same ratio as the 400R but can't find any info as to if its an open or LSD? More often than not the auto LSD is open
    • Do not replace the power steering lines with this stuff. If it's anything like the Chase Bays stuff it will leak and be worse than stock. The reason why the reservoir is on the LH/passenger side of the car is because that's just where the reservoir was most convenient to fit. Don't overthink this stuff. The intake/cold side of the engine is pretty busy on these cars. And again, the hardpipe is designed to be a janky power steering cooler. In theory you can replace it with a real power steering cooler but that's really only for track use where boiling the fluid is a distinct possibility. Start with the low pressure lines feeding the pump from the reservoir. Make sure there isn't a bunch of junk in the reservoir filter. Be careful to not get ATF all over the engine bay. I hate dealing with ATF spills, you can clean it up and the slightest crevice will still release more oil that can still drip over time. You also want to inspect for leaks before you make a mess and can't tell what happened. Most likely you have a leak somewhere that is allowing fluid out and air in. Failing that it's allowing air in but not fluid out. Only place I can really see that happening is on the low pressure side because the pump will pull a slight vacuum to draw fluid in. Everything after the pump is high pressure or lower pressure, approaching atmospheric by the time it returns to the reservoir.
    • I did a skidpan night at SMSP this week, it was much cheaper than $350. But yeah, you need to slap an LSD in that thing.  I put an OS Giken in the 370Z and it's f**king MARVELOUS even compared to Nissan's viscous LSD. So you're saying it's free now that it's a housing estate? 😂
    • Nah, the car seems to run exactly as it did prior, in saying this it does "seem" to be better down low, like more eager to rev, but that may be 100% placebo effect from intake noise But, I'm not worried about it at all, in the end it is a fairly low compression NA engine that has a well shrouded intake,  if it is getting hotter IAT I cannot notice anything negative performance wise from the seat of my pants thrashing it about on the street or sitting in traffic, so meh, car now now makes induction noise so I'm happy
    • Do you have an IAT sensor? It's worth checking it to see. You may be suprised how little gap you actually need to flood your engine with hot air. (I tape up my airbox for a reason) :p
