Hi guys,

I recently brought an R32 as a daily, it's stock, runs stock boost etc.

It pings it absolute face off above about 4500rpm.

I wound the timing back as far as it can go (yes I know it's clockwise on the CAS) and it was better but I can still hear a few pings and that is will like 20RWKW down low because the timing is so retarded.

This is with 98 octane fuel (BP Ultimate) I have tried different fuels with the same result.

It doesn't ping coming on to boost which is kinda wierd, only at about 4000rpm+ once it starts to do something. Stock turbo is fully spooled way before then.

Any idea's guys? The boost is around 5psi at the intake manifold, also confirmed with another gauge.

I have an RB30DET in an R33 as a daily driver and I remember when that had the stock RB25DET in it, I use to run 12psi on 18 degrease of timing and it never pinged on 98 octane fuel. :)

Stock coil packs, Also have a receipt from the previous owner where it has just had new plugs put in it at a work shop. Not sure what they are and haven't pulled one out to look but I assume they would just be stock gap.

Not sure how spark plug gap or brand can make it ping.

It doesn't miss at all so I assumed it wouldn't be a spark related issue.

:) why didn't I think of that before...

I will stick a fuel pressure reg on and see how much fuel pressure the stock pump is holding... kinda have to test that under load though...

I think I have a set of RB20DET injectors lying around some where I will try changing them over... I hate removing intake manifolds on RBs so much :)

Will also try replacing the pump if I can find one lying around. I have a Bosch 044 lying around so I could run that in-line and see if that helps.

It's wierd cuz this car has really no power, I guess around 100RWKW if it's lucky. I would have thought the stock fuel gear wouldn't have a problem with it unless an injector is all clogged up or the stock fuel pressure reg is dying.

I replaced the pump with a new pump, voltages are fine. I really don't think it is a fuel issue as the car doesn't hesitate or have any signs of fuel starvation.

It also doesn't ping for like the first 2 minutes of driving until the car gets hot, I thought it could just need a cooler upgrade but no other R32 that I have seen pinged with stock cooler, In fact a friend of mine had an R32 with more than stock timing, 12psi and stock cooler and that had no issues.

I changed the computer to one that had been tuned to 180RWKW with stock injectors and the car will not rev. It has classic retarded timing issues like very slow free rev and at about 4500rpm it just wouldn't free rev any higher. Another sign or retarded timing was the exhaust was pooping heaps of flames due to the exhaust valve opening while the fuel was still burning. I didn't pay much attention to this as this ecu has not been tried in an R32 since it was brought off ebay by a friend so it could just be a dud tune. Also I adjusted the timing with the cas and it didn't help.

check if the vacuum line to the factory FPR is connected and not damaged. Sounds like a fuelling problem, when the car is cold by default it will run more rich hence less/no ping.

I suspect a faulty FPR or fuel pump.

A friend just pointed out to me, it's probably got like bosch temp 5 plugs as it had new plugs put in at a work shop, they used bosch plugs and a temp 5 in a bosch plug is like a temp 3 in an NGK. I am going to put some NGK temp 8 plugs in it and see if that fixes the issue.

sounds like ur timing belt hasnt been installed properly, check that first, spark plugs dont make u ping !! >.<

Agreed, he really needs to check the belt and see where all the markings are.

A betting man would put money on this.

Of course it is - it's pinging!
It also doesn't ping for like the first 2 minutes of driving until the car gets hot,
Because the engine is cold, and the ECU is running the engine rich.
... it's probably got like bosch temp 5 plugs ...
Have you actually looked to see what plugs are installed?

You still haven't told us what fuel pressure the engine is running.

spark plugs dont make u ping !!
If the plug is running too hot, it can pre-ignite the mixture (works like a glowplug).

You changed the pump and injectors but not the fuel filter??

You can measure all the fuel pressure you like but you also need to check the system flow, thats just as important.

Use a timing light; that will tell you where the timing actually is and if there is a possibility of the cam timing being out.

and also:

Are you sure its actually pinging?

Some boost leaks sometimes sound like knocking. Just an idea.

    • There's more than one way to skin that cat, and most of the sump Maatouks have done will be GTR sumps. They are HUGE in GTR drag racing here.
    • Yeah...I always start at the shift solenoids, because there's only a few reasons these will spook into limp mode, and bad shift solenoids is one ~ the other can be the shift control module (if you have steering wheel shift buttons)...it's easier to eliminate the solenoids first.
    • Might piggy back off this thread since there's been a good discussion about PWM.   I purchased a Walbro 460 F90000267 and have been looking into PWM to understand it. It was purchased more of a future proof as my original OEM fuel pump died (r33 below 200kw) and figured I'd just upgrade it to this. That's when it hit me that a pump this big can cause more dramas with such high amperage draw and heating of the fuel pump being on 100% all the time in such a mild setup.   I have a Nexus R3 and slowly collecting power mods but I was looking into the PWM feature on the NSP software:   Then looking at the graph from the fuel pump:     Am I safe to assume reducing duty cycle to 50% for example would make the pump run like a 230/lph ? Where does the PWM come in all of this ?   I've gone down the rabbit hole of PWM fuel pumps and it seems there are many differing opinions on how to go about it 馃槄
    • Thank you, this will keep me busy for a bit.  I will update progression.
    • That specific one would be an exchange part, meaning I'd have to send mine to them. Plus it looks like a non AWD sump, which won't work for me. There is one or two shops in my country that I can ask to do a sump extension job and it'd most likely end up being cheaper than sending mine to AUS or NZ and getting one back, and quicker too.
