so i figured seeing as ive owned this thing for a little over 12 months now, and have been on sau since well before i owned a car, i figured it was about time i posted my build.

first off, a quick history lesson.

by the end of 2007 i was getting sick and tired of driving around in my parents magna, so i started hunting for something decent, i soon stumbled upon a toyota celsior, and in january of '08, i bought it.

Celsior036.jpg

its was a pretty cool rig for a first car. bought with the exhaust, wheels, and a field dhc. replaced the exhaust not long after with something that was half decent, 20% tint all round, and a suitably large and loud stereo. sounded like world war 3 with the straight through exhaust, rolled through defect and rbt stations without a second glance, and the ability to drop the arse and lift the nose at the press of a button never ceased to make me grin.

however, it was a 20 year old, so there was a lot of shit going wrong with it, decided to sell it late in '08, and sold it to the first guy that came to have a look at it.

about a month later, a bloke i used to work with gave me a call telling me about a clean s14a he'd just got in at the car yard he was then working at, i went down to check it out that day, was told it had already been sold to another yard, so i gave them my card and played the waiting game.

about an hour later i got a call from the new yard asking me if i wanted to pop round the next day to check it out. so i woke up bright and early the next day, and went and had a look.

on the first drive, 2 things became immediately apparent, there was a bad exhaust leak developing somewhere, and the rear muffler had simple been thrown on with the pipework bent to suit it.

but aside from that, it was mint, in incredible condition for its age and mileage, so i left a deposit, and came back the following week to pick it up.

s14a.jpg

(stock photo, i didnt take any pics when i picked it up).

dead stocker save for some 33% tint and a very cheap headunit that was at best temperamental.

had 152,000 on the clock (as of now, has 162,000), and a service history dating back to the 100,000km mark, it was pretty obvious that this thing had been babied for the majority of its life.

unfortunately it was the base model, so it didnt have the nissan lip kit, or the fog lights, but i wasnt complaining.

and this is how it looks now;

well, copped a canary at the ns christmas cruise on sunday. little pissed off, more of an inconvenience than anything though, was done for a lot of shit that isnt illegal, but whatever.

also bought a clutch for five fifths of f**k all, no idea what it is though, any ideas?

clutch.jpg

gonna pick it up on friday and take it down to acs for them to have a sus.

well, it looks f**king disgraceful at the moment. handles like a freakin school bus to boot.

IMG_3207.jpg

IMG_3208.jpg

little bit done today, coilovers have been swapped out for the stock shit, and a set of 16x7 wheels from a y33 (im guessing) with hella legal rubber thrown on. will rip the tint off whenever i can be arsed. boost gauge has been removed, temp gauge has been tucked under the dash, standard boost solenoid has been fitted, just gotta remove the seat, fit a baffle to the exhaust, and clean it up a bit, then ill try my luck with a cop shop clearance.

Edited by scandyflick

well, my wheels are for sale. were pretty much sold the other day. but the buyer fell through today. need these gone so i can buy my new wheels.

got this back from acs today.

i was expecting it to be a single or maybe twin plate ceramic or metallic clutch, in which case a rebuild would set me back about $500.

but no, its a full carbon single plate clutch, and it needs a new clutch disc, and something else that escapes me at the moment. but yeah, itll set me back about $1100. which isnt too bad i spose when acs sell these for $2k new...

  • 5 weeks later...

so in a couple weeks time ill be enjoying a holiday from my licence for 6 months.

with that in mind, i decided id stop being a slack flamin mongrel get the car ready for regency;

standard cat and exhaust have been fitted.

standard boost solenoid refitted.

standard suspension with spring packers refitted.

standardish wheels.

engine/engine bay/underbody/diff housing have all be cleaned to within in an inch of their lives.

if it doesnt pass first time, im gonna be f**kin shocked. its booked in for friday morning, and ill be getting my old man to take it through, so i should be sweet.

on the plus side though, ive sold my wheels. :D

decided against getting the cst's (cant be f**ked), so ive narrowed my choices down to these 2... well... 3;

CR Kais, matte carbon, 17 x 9 +17 all round.

crkai.jpg

Work Equip, murdered, 17 x 9 +18/19.

equip.jpg

or basically the exact same shit as i just sold... but with caps. :bunny:

(17 x 8 +5, 17 x 9 +11... yup, same.)

mesh.jpg

opinions?

sorta leaning towards the equips at the moment, always wanted a set of bastardised wheels, not sure how they'll work on a red car though.

Edited by scandyflick

eh, its more likely that ill sell the thing than spend 6 months tinkering. :domokun:

regency today. passed without troubles. pays to be pretty meticulous i spose. put a deposit on my next set of wheels too. :rofl2:

what wheels you getting champ?

:P

everyone'll find out soon enough. ;)

off with the wing ! and my god it would look so finee..... so fine i might sell my 32 and purchase a s14.... nahh never =p

lol. the spoiler stays. so keep your r32. :(

  • 1 month later...

couple changes, the wheels finally went, some chump with an r31 bought. nah, seriously, its a pretty rad car, head over and take a look.

anyways, there are changes,

ended up buying work equips, which a pretty cash, but im getting bored with them already. anyone want 'em? lol.

IMG_32991600x1200.jpg

IMG_36811600x1200.jpg

IMG_36801600x1200.jpg

threw a set of cusco camber arms in there about the same time.

and i finally picked up a jdm front bar.

IMG_3755.jpg

needed a bit of work though;

IMG_3759.jpg

IMG_3762.jpg

spent quite a few hours getting it all perfect. but should be ready for the painters by monday, and i found a set of foglights while randomly browsing ns the other day;

img6899ay.jpg

all for the bargain price of 70 squid. laughin.

another 'finally got around to', bought some gauges for oil temp and press. cheapies, but then, my boost gauge was a cheapie, and that works mint;

temp.jpg

press.jpg

and finally, i pulled the brakes off to get the rotors machined and put a reseal through the calipers, and noticed that my rackends were covered in grease, and looser than a thai hooker, so i went out and replaced those with some fairly serious kts units. and ive got a set of kazama castor arms coming in the next few days.

and yeah, i lost my licence. so this thing will be up for sale soon.

Edited by scandyflick

n-n-n-n-new shit!

new kts rod ends compared to the old flogged out ones;

IMG_3766.jpg

IMG_3770.jpg

old ones were well haggard. probably been on since the car rolled off the line, both sides were leaking and i could move the ball joint around with my pinky. another upside is the kts units should help alleviate the bumpsteer i have to cope with every now and then.

finally picked up and installed a set of kazama castor rods;

IMG_3769.jpg

probably gonna max em out, 6 or 7 degrees should be sweet. the engrish on the box made me lol

IMG_3768.jpg

and new gauges n shit;

IMG_3772.jpg

IMG_3771.jpg

ill install 'em later. hella cant be f**ked.

and ive got a set of HEL braided brake lines on the way, and hobbsie has apparently sent off my foglights. sweet. set of toe rods and i should be set.

  • 1 year later...

God it's been a while since I've looked at this thread.

Couple things to update.

Got sick of the brakes, so they were binned for R33 brakes all round, along with an R33 BM44 master cylinder.

Standard airbox was binned for an ARC box.

Cusco coils were beginning to show their age, so they were binned in favour of some new BC RM's.

Standard toe arms were also shown the door in favour of JIC arms.

Inlet was replaced with a HKS alloy suction kit.

Got a whole bunch of shit powder coated.

Made a fixed seat rail for the Velo.

Fit a 330mm Sparco and detachable hub.

I sold my Equips in favour of some much cooler 17x9+18 Desmond Regamaster Marquis Promadas.

... I feel like I'm forgetting quite a bit...

Replaced my crushed and utterly destroyed Apex'i exhaust with a custom made 3" stainless steel system by AM Performance.

Z32 AFM, Hybrid EBC, Nistune, and Blitz 550cc injectors were fitted, which turned out to be f**ked, they were swapped for newer Sard 550cc injectors.

Got it on the dyno and we spent 4 hours chasing stupid problems (VCT, electrical, boost control, etc), and basically came to the conclusion that the humble HG high flow simply wasn't capable of controlling boost.

So with much frustration, I removed the turbo and purchased a Tial 38mm gate, then decided on a completely new direction.

The 2860 was sold with plans of buying a T518z or TD06-20g 8cm and running the ex. gate with that.

Then I started reading up on Borg Warner EFR turbos. Which leaves me where I am now, with an 8 week wait while I wait for my EFR 6258 to arrive. Current plans are to remove and sell the Sard 550's and replace them with short body ID1000 (or Bosch EV14 1000cc) injectors in a custom top feed rail, a new NPC clutch rated to 330rwkw, shimmed diff, new diff bushes, Brian Crower step 2 cams, Aeromotive Stealth 340 in-tank fuel pump, and E85. With an end goal of over 250rwkw with a conservative tune. :)

I may even take the time to relocate my oil cooler and add a thermostat.

To keep me occupied and excited in the mean time, I have a lovely pair of 17x10 +20 Regamasters due at my door any day now.

I'll get pics up eventually.

  • 8 months later...

This thread is basically my red headed step child. Ignored until it's near death, and then laughed at.

So in the spirit of things, here's an update.

Binned the idea of converting to top feed, hella couldn't be bothered at the time, and for some reason I was concerned about legality. Something I no longer really care about. Ended up going with a set of Sard 850cc side feeds, single point. Though at some point in the future, it's likely they'll get swapped out for ID's.

Cradle was dropped..

IMG_4398.jpg

IMG_4399.jpg

And then stripped, painted, and bushes replaced while the diff copped an 0.8mm shim.

These arrived and were recently installed;

IMG_4396.jpg

This was sent off to be chemically stripped and recoated.

IMG_4397.jpg

A giant ass box from America arrived;

IMG_4363.jpg

In it was this;

IMG_4351.jpg

Had some machine work done;

IMG_4375.jpg

Picked up a pair of these;

IMG_4348.jpg

Attempted to fit the very large (for a T2) BW to the standard manifold with questionable results;

IMG_4384.jpg

IMG_4387.jpg

IMG_4382.jpg

IMG_4390.jpg

So I tried it with an Apex'i manifold, with much the same results;

IMG_4368.jpg

IMG_4366.jpg

IMG_4364.jpg

I eventually got jack of it, and left it sitting there for many months while I burned my money on strippers and cocaine... Which I for some reason eventually grew tired of, so I returned to spinning spanners. Had all the Ragamuffins resprayed in a particularly lovely metallic silver for $150.

IMG_8540.jpg

Made all this jank work;

IMG_8515.jpg

Put the rear end back in;

IMG_8522.jpg

Got a fellow SAU'er around, plied him with alcohol and got him to turn this;

IMG_8511.jpg

Into this;

IMG_8513.jpg

Eventually I called some mates over and we put it here, and laughed hysterically;

IMG_8567.jpg

Rolled onto this;

IMG_8568.jpg

Took it all to the very capable Andrew at AM Performance, left it with for a little while, and the end result is this;

IMG_8992.jpg

IMG_8994.jpg

IMG_8996.jpg

IMG_8998.jpg

IMG_9007.jpg

That was a couple days ago, since then, dump, front and cat has been made up and fitted, along with a very complex looking hot pipe, and a 3" intake. Unfortunately, the new positioning of the turbo meant that my lovely ARC box couldn't be used and therefore, was sold. Shit happens.

Should have it back in my garage and taking up space this evening. Still have a clutch to install, some minor wiring to be done, guards to be flared, LS2 coils to be installed, and a multitude of other things, but now at least the big stuff is taken care of.

IMG_9015.jpg

Back in the garage doing what she does best. Absorbing space, time, and money. Big thanks to Matty T for driving all the way out to tow her home.

Gotta plug up this and the EGR at some point, I've only got the bung there for tuning. Won't be running an O2 sensor.

IMG_9013.jpg

Dump, front and cat are all one piece. So in the entire exhaust system, I only have 2 joints, v-band at the turbo, and your run of the mill 2 bolt flange where the cat joins the rest of the exhaust. More pics when I next find myself under the car...

... Which is probably tomorrow.

Intake;

IMG_9012.jpg

Gotta find a filter, trying to find a Pipercross suitable for a Z32 AFM, once I get that sorted, it'll be back to Andrew to weld on suitable mounts, and if necessary, mod the pipe to suit.

And the rather complicated lobster back hot pipe. A dozen different sections welded together;

IMG_9011.jpg

IMG_9010.jpg

Pretty damn cool.

    • Update for the sake of closure   Ended up getting the intercooler piping all sorted, new plugs and yellow jacket coils, and she was idling mint until it warmed up while I was bleeding the cooling system. Found the misfire to be localised to cyl 3 by unplugging coilpacks, ran a compression test, that checked out, then decided to get a mate to check if that spark plug was firing out of the motor. Upon cranking it over, with the injectors disconnected, the car actually fired and ran on a couple cylinders and heaps of fuel came out the top of cyl 3 I'd say that injector's either spraying incorrectly or spraying far too much, which is fine as I'm planning on replacing them anyway I'm planning on making about 250kW on flex fuel, and have a set of 1000cc injectors from ozautosport, obviously overkill but I'm planning on building the motor and running more boost further down the line, do you reckon they'd be too big for a smooth idle on 98? Thanks for the replies gents, much appreciated
    • I'm confused. You said you want to "remove the clear coat from most panels" but it sounds like you are actually doing a full respray? Few random things to add -  If you chase the blistered paint with 120 grit, I can almost guarantee you'll chase it down to bare metal (that's fine). But if you paint the car from here, you'll have nice little indents where ever the blistered paint was. The new paint won't magically level out the low areas, you need to fill them. Which leads me to the main point I wanted to add, make sure the whole car is flat before you paint it. All those areas with blistered paint you sanded out, make sure to fill them and triple check they are flat with a block guide coat. I'd also check the whole car is flat with a large block and guide coat but yeah up to you if you want to go that far.
    • 300hp (225kw) is barely outside the standard turbo's range with a bit of extra boost in it (200ish). If you are going to change the turbo you should aim for 250-300kw (330-400hp) to make the expense worthwhile
    • A couple of things, firstly omg that turbo is expensive! $3,000 USD for dinosaur technology is robbery. You could buy a G series turbo and have a good amount of change instead.  If you want a good budget option, have a look here - https://hypergearturbos.com/product/rb25dethighflow/ If you are keen to spend more, have look at the modern turbos, Garrett G series, Borgwarner EFR, etc. Have a look at the RB25 dyno results thread for inspiration.  If you upgrade your turbo to something that will support the 300hp you want and only "probably" have Haltech ECU, your car will only "probably" run. Actually, no it won't run. You are going to need the ECU and injectors at the time you do the turbo upgrade.  No thoughts on "this much boost" as you didn't say how much boost that actually is. Having said that, plenty of unopened RB25's making even more power then what you are chasing.
