it can mean different things in different contexts.

1: where the car or part is from, usually to establish that it's genuine and not a rip from china.

2: a style, however, JDM itself isn't really style since japan has many different styles, drift, VIP, bosozoku etc.

like with everything popular, it is used too often and a lot of people have no idea what it really is but that doesn't reduce how unique and (IMO) good the styles are when done properly.
