cracka puh-leez; it's not like Ferrari are in any way a shining example of sainthood

do you really wanna have that argument? apparently when some underling inside McLaren does something wrong, the FIA holds Ron Dennis personally accountable (obviously it'll be Whitmarsh now), yet when the TEAM PRINCIPAL of Renault orders one of his seat-warmers to have a stack, Renault is in no way responsible for that :D

and it's got nothing at all to do with the fact that a Renault withdrawl would have left F1 with no dual manufacturer|engine supplier team bar Ferrari (until the recent advent of Merc GP, of course)

p.s the shortcut idea is some dumb-ass shit

Maybe you missed the :) in my post.....

The KERS system provided us with some overtaking last year. So why don't they introduce a "push to pass" system. Doesn't have to work like KERS with batteries and energy recycling etc., but how about a giving each car a few extra RPM for 1 use per lap or something?

You don't see any drafting anymore and you don't see anyone overtake down these really long straight aways either. Something's wrong with F1 and they need to fix it.

I'm so close to ignoring F1 and playing GT4/5 on PS3 instead!

I think the short term solution is to make it 2 mandatory pit stops. At least then we won't see everyone just surviving to make it to the finish line on their worn out tyres.

It really was a joke watching the front runners turn to survival mode and try to make it to the chequred flag. If it wasn't for Vettel slowing and a few cars catching and passing, there would have been no action whatsoever!

Dear God, no. What is this, Mario Kart? Collect enough coins and you get a turbo boost? Why not design the cars so that they can pass each other the old-fashioned way, you know, by out-ballsing each other?

Two problems. One, the brakes are so good they're only on them for a couple of seconds, even for the biggest stops, which doesn't allow for out-braking. The difference between braking too early and overshooting the corner is only a couple of tenths. So we need to downgrade the brakes. Don't whinge about it being a safety issue, the cars and tracks are safe enough that reducing braking performance by 25% or so won't significantly increase the danger.

The other problem is the aero. As a previous poster stated, they can't draft anymore and most of this is because of the complex aero. The FIA is trying to modify the cars to overcome this but it hasn't worked. I can think of a few things that might help:

  1. Ban diffusers. They seem to cause a lot of the turbulence.
  2. Reduce the HEIGHT (i.e. thickness) of the wings. To see what I mean look at the rear wings in Monza-spec. You can't read the sponsor's logos from front on because the wing elements are much flatter relative to the ground.
  3. Look at re-introducing ground-effect as a way of maintaining corner speed, although this may not help
  4. Bring back the POWER! Reduced straight-line speed means reduced drag, which means less drafting. Get the cars back to 900 bhp or so.

Anyway, that's my two (billion) cents. For me the golden era of F1 was the 80s, safety issues aside there was some great racing. Get the cars back to near that spec, while maintaining safety, and the racing will improve.

+1, there's no real point in having 900+ hp if you aint got the traction to take advantage of it.

They have plenty of traction to cope with the power, and anyway, even if they didn't, having to battle wheel-spin and oversteer is going to lead to more passing.

Well I was think it's alot better idea than Bernie's solution of introducing short cuts. I've seen the push to pass button work well in other open wheel series so why not?

I don't think it turns F1 into Mario Kart at all. There are no such coins to collect! The money has all been spent! lol!

I think we can all agree that something needs to change in order not to suffer more boring GP's.

Just about anything is better than the short-cut idea. Honestly you wonder what the guy puts in his brownies sometimes. Like the idea of having medals instead of points ... :D

My point is by simplifying the engineering you can make the racing better and cheaper. The trick is to do it in such a way as to keep F1 at the pinnacle of motorsport ... you can't have F1 cars being outpaced by Indycars or something.

should def look at making changes that enable chasing cars to follow their prey very close at racing speeds without any of these tedious downforce/overheating issues. road cars have more sophisticated aerodynamic aids than F1 cars are allowed to have these days- having a variable aperture for the radiator inlets could probably compensate for the hotter air when drafting. they should at least be allowed to have something like that, and make it an automated function linked to water temperature.

the return to steel brake rotors as mentioned would probably help a bit too

all you have to do is throw in a right-hand turn and the Indycar is f**ked! :D

Can we expect the Australian GP to be any better? I don't think Albert Park lends itself to overtaking any more than the Bahrain circuit, in fact, probably less.

What's the easiest solution to implement? Make the compound difference between the option and prime tyres greater? Enforce 2 madatory pit stops?

I have a feeling nothing will be changed in the short term. We are all going to have to suffer watching boring processional GP's or watch/follow something else.

Did anyone see the season review of the European Carrera Cup on OneHD yesterday? For a one make series, there was plenty of action and overtaking. Blew F1 out of the water for entertainment!

It would be good to see them make some basic changes to the track, honestly, there is a couple of things there that could vastly improve the racing at Albert Park, atm it is a little 'stop - start - stop - start', sorta like Montreal without the massive back straight... :(

The easiest fix is make the drivers neck a 6 pack before qualifying, then before the race go to King street for a big night out, necking beers and banging dirty crumpet. Come the race it will be great to see the real men able to punt a car quickly with the load of a excessive night on the piss on their mind

Hahaha! That's what good ol James Hunt used to do! It was good enough for F1 drivers back then wasn't it?

James Hunt - What a legend :(

whincup and button to swap rides for a blast around the track tomorrow

should be able to hear it from work... so close now, cant wait

I'll be heading over there shortly, hopefully I can get access to the gate.

    • The cam I am actually putting in (a few posts up) is actually smaller than my current one. At least duration/overlap wise. All the chop stuff I hear just sounds like an engine running badly, because it is. I then envision driving it around in 1st gear and being massively sad about it bucking to the beat of said chop. There is an idle video of someone with a similar cam floating around the internet, but mine is a custom cam (so is his) so it'll never be the same, plus the fact exhausts are entirely different. What I want to do is put some bullet mufflers/race mufflers in to replace a couple sections straight pipes that currently replace the two extra cats that I don't need. But this is even further down the line!
    • I can tell you now, when the bracket that the little hydraulic ram attaches to snaps, with a subframe, and V8 from an AMG C63 on it, it sounds like someone letting shotgun off right beside you. It leaves your ears ringing, and a huge thankfulness that you never ever put a body part under something heavy that's only supported by a hydraulic lift...
    • Still not a guarantee fix. I used a high quality butyl-mastiq (the black goo that's not really silicone nor polyurethane, same stuff they use from the factory that just spreads out like melty cheese), and I still get lots of water on both sides of the trunk when raining or washing the car. I also suspect the factory spoiler rubber gasket might not be sealing well, so I'm thinking of adding a thin layer of grey silicone around the bolt holes on both sides and see if that's where it also leaks from. The biggest issue is that these cars don't come with a drain hole on each side like other coupes and hatchbacks.
    • I hate it, but maybe he could paint it Monster jam style and call it...godzilla?
    • Would seem to me to be appropriate to go GTR style bar. There are options with and without N1 vent holes, with the GTR lower lip integral (because FG copy). https://justjap.com/search?q=r32 bumper
