like I said, textbook hamo... why keep fining him if he's just going to do it?

great race all up, I haven't been that hyped up for a race literally EVER... would have been great if webs won, but that was far fetched from the get go, completely ignoring the somewhat bullshit gearbox change and the stupidly late pitstop...

Next race should be good but I'm sure the result will be somewhat the same... Hamo came second there last year by just over a second...

Hopefully the Aussies can hand it too Ze Germans!

Whilst i understand why Webber had to stay out as long as possible, but what happened to their pace in the last 10laps. Webber seemed to be shadowing Vettels poor pace. Did thye both have car problems> Did BBC have anything to say about it. I will repeati hate ESPN coverage, the commentary is just so bad

no radio of Webber, so assume either he got instructions silently on his display to perhaps turn the car down or noone told him to hurry the f* up to chop off Vettel. You'd think RB would want him ahead given they need to keep someone close to the Macs in the WDC and Webber happens to be closer at this time.

nah, they held him out there for that long so he wouldnt cath vetel.

If they pitted him when he his tyres starting going off he would have come out around SV plus or minus a second.

Webber was held up by several seconds per lap by backmarkers jockeying for position in their own battles (Sutil was singled out by name for seeming to ignore the blue flags and/or not looking in the mirrors).

His tyres might not have made the distance but if they were thinking the others might need another pit stop then there was no harm to be done in pitting him then. If his tyres held up he would be challenging for a podium if they didn't he would be no risk of finishing lower than 5th.

Something doesn't smell right with that call by RBR.

RBR are definitely screwing webber to favour vettel. sad but it's pretty bloody clear.

also, how on earth was hamilton not given a drive through? when you look up 'un-safe release' in the F1 rule book there is a diagram of that exact manoeuvre. bunch of UK biased wankers just can't stand to hand a penalty out to one of the boys...

Webber in qualifying was mighty. shame he couldn't clinch P1 but he did the main job which was rub vettel in it again. I doubt there was any more time in his car.

the old gearbox change was a bit odd. seemed to be working fine in qualy and since the cars aren't driven between end of Q3 and the race how did they know about this magic problem?

I couldn't believe it when he started from 7th and was making UP places of the start not falling back. Webber really is a new man this year. He actually is starting to look like he could be WDC material. Farking vettel on the other hand looks like he's coming apart at the seams. he's always whining about something or other and complaining on the radio. sure sign he is feeling the heat of being a firm number 2 in his team. he might still be the favoured choice of the retards at RBR but he must surely know by now that everyone with 2 functioning eyes knows that right now he is webbers bitch on a circuit.

RBR are really pissing me off with the way they treat webber. lucky he's big enough to put it aside and race.

The only thing I could think of was maybe it was due to the little love tap to the wall during quali?

The only thing I could think of was maybe it was due to the little love tap to the wall during quali?

That could well have been it. It's quite possible that that tap damaged the gearbox enough to require a change.

I'm not surprised that the conspiracy theorists are suggesting RBR changed a perfectly healthy gearbox just to sabotage Webber, but I don't buy it. Webber's tap, slight though it seemed, could well have bent something. F1 teams do this sort of thing regularly, it's quite routine. I don't see anything suspicious about it. It's far better for Webber to finish fifth than not at all.

I'm not saying RBR don't have a bias against Webber, but if it was as bad as some people seem to think why would he sign for another year? I think at this stage of his career Mark would rather quit than put up with crap treatment. I don't know whether RBR would have treated Vetool differently, but it may well have cost him if they had. None of us have seen the gearbox, so we don't know how badly it was damaged, if at all. It could have failed and then Mark would have scored nothing.

Championships aren't just about winning races, they're about making the best of bad days. Moving up two places from seventh may not have been the result we hoped for, but it could have been a lot worse.

The gearbox would be a genuine issue there is no sense in compromising points for the constructors championship.

The pit strategy was either biased or flawed or both. Either is a pretty poor advertisement for the brains trust on the pitwall at RBR.

ps. Geez if you did that milk advert or gay porn when you were struggling for a dollar I am not sure what would be more damaging for your reputation on becoming public knowledge?

I don't think he ever really had a shot at the top in the last race. No strategy would have left him there. If he was pitted earlier then he would have been 4th or so, and have to go 30 laps on the soft tyres. He might have made it, he might not have... vetool only did 14 laps on them.

if others had to pit then he would have been first, but that didn't happen.

second time this season too. and no meaningful (ie grid) penalty for running out of fuel against the regulations in final qualy, just a $10K slap on the wrist. they reckon a lap of fuel weight there was worth 1.5tenths lap time.

McLaren/Hamo are having a very good run with the stewards this year...

story goes it was an oil analysis that picked up the issue.

because its the fastest car he could realistically get a seat in next year. Neither of the McLaren seats are available. Ferrari maybe, but the car is slower. Merc seat also might be available, but its slower again. Renault would be the most likely option and its not a real contender either.

I very much doubt any driver would rather quit than have a seat in one of the fastest cars on the grid!

Well I have to say that was the best race of 2010 so far,

albiet with some very notable failings of the stewards aka Hamiltons release and scuhmi antics with Kubica, I cant help but think and agree with some of you guys here about RBR and Mark Webber, I think they could have brought Mark in for new tyres without risking 5th place when he was around 9+ seconds in front of Hamy who should have at least had a drive thru penalty as Alonso was clearly in the exit pit lane before Hamy was released. Mark could have then lapped quicker and quite possibly overtaken SV for 4th. My feeling that's the reason why RBR didn't bring Mark in for tyres.

When you've been busting your arse in F1 for 8 years and other formulae for 20 years before that ... it gets a bit wearing. You'd be surprised at what some F1 drivers have walked away from, and when they've walked away from it. Mark is fantastically disciplined and very motivated but everyone has their limits. I think he's happy enough with what he's achieved so far that he could quit now and be satisfied. The only reason he hasn't is because he still feels he can achieve more, and unlike a certain 7-time world champion, he has a good shot at doing so.

Some explanations from the RBR drivers

Sebastian Vettel (4th)

“.....Otherwise, I had a gearbox problem from around halfway through the race, which meant I had to slow down."

Mark Webber (5th)

“.......In the second stint I was ahead and was monitoring the gap to Lewis. I was moving away a bit at the start, as he was pacing to get to the finish. I was trying to keep my pace constant, but in the end the tyres didn’t want that pace and they go away from you. It’s virtually impossible to keep the tyres from degrading here, no matter how slow you drive. In the end it wasn’t really a surprise to come back out from my second pit stop in fifth, as I knew people in front had been packed up tightly behind Lewis. We then turned the car down to save it for the next race."

    • It's excellent but I'm still breaking it in so I'm not 100% sure where it'll end up. I would say it's about 15% heavier than stock and the smoothness of the slip zone is quite progressive but you need to be a little patient compared to stock or it'll bite hard and stall. Stock I got away with absolutely horrid clutch control. Like I said before I couldn't even tell where the clutch would grab when it was stock so releasing way too quickly without enough revs it would just slip and the revs would drop lower than ideal but that would be the end of it. Currently there's a bit of a nasty clutch judder if I don't apply enough revs + find the exact wrong point of the slip point in the clutch pedal but it feels like it's slowly resolving as I drive it more. I would not recommend the competition clutch unless you really need the extra clamp force. I think this clutch combined with the Nismo operating cylinder is going to be exactly what I want. Enough bite that you need to remember the release point to avoid stalling or rough shifts, but progressive enough that it's not hard to drive by any means and not heavy at all. I tried a "super single" clutch on my friend's 997.2 Turbo 6MT and that was absolutely horrid. It runs an electrohydraulic power steering pump for the clutch power boost so there's zero feedback in the clutch pedal and there was a horrific clutch shudder well after break-in due to the lack of marcel springs or hub springs in the friction disk. It felt like the slip zone was the thickness of a single toe twitch as well so it was almost impossible to avoid stalling it unless you gave it a ton of revs and just dumped the clutch instead of trying to be smooth with it. I was terrified of pulling out in front of traffic. I have also tried some kind of "super single" on an EK9 and that makes this twin plate Coppermix look like a stock clutch. Releasing the clutch pedal even slightly too quickly feels like you're getting rear-ended. The pedal is extremely heavy as well and there's no vacuum assist like the GTR.
    • Yeah, well I was probably way underguessing the $300 figure anyway. Just multiplied a "normal" by 4 for the purposes of pointing out it's not cheap, particularly if it has to be repeated.
    • We have an alignment shop out here that does what you're talking about but he wants like 800 AUD a pop. DIY is "cheaper" but once you start accounting for the value of your time I'm not sure it's worth it.
    • The main catch phrase for any car is "the eye of the beholder", and "personal tastes and preferences" And as for the plastic "flares", I honestly think they look cheap and tacky, and I cannot see them aging well, maybe if they were body colour they might look better to my eyes, but, I would still prefer it the were more like the older WRX STI models that had the wider body metal panels In saying all this 5hit, I wouldn't buy a new WRX again, even if it had the wide body metal panels
