Everyone is a pro until they are in an accident. Cars are all electric these days, the engines computer controls everything in the car including the cruise control. The cars computer probably doesnt allow the car to be changed to neutral when the car is revving high to protect the engine. Anyway, he tried the neutral option but the car was locked into gear.

Mr Weir said he tried to shift the 2002 Explorer into neutral but the car was frozen in gear. Mr Case said he could think of no mechanical explanation for this.

We seem to have some conflicting evidence and opinions here.

May I suggest that we rock up to the Ford dealership and use the Explorer as a simulator - like 'Air Crash Investigations'?

On 2nd thought, I meant to prioritise my time better as a NY Resolution

On 3rd thought, even tho it's still 2009, it's just a Ford - nah forget it.

I dont beleive this untill I see it.....

every single car I have ever heard of allows you to put it into nuetral easly and the transmission doesnt 'lock' it into gear!

Whats more important - the safety of their Customers or their Engines??

Even if you put it into nuetral with the cruise cable stuck on - the engine will be fine if it revs hard for a little untill you stop and turn off the car, hence the reason they have the 'rev limiter' on (I assume) all cars these days....

In my opinion - this person was an absolute moron and a drama queen (after hearing him on the phone with the police) - and the police officer on the phone with him wasnt any better considering how long it took them to stop him.....

Common sense did not prevail on this occasion!!! Its called 'common sense'.... but its not common.....

thats my 2c....
