hey sau'ers

i got my brakes checked out today by ABS, coz they do a free brake check and my brakes squeel like anything,

anywho, the guy told me that i have really shit pads on my car and i need to replace my rotors.

my pads have only been warn down 10% and my rotors are almost on the bare minimum.

he gave me a quote, and it came to $1300!!!!!! WTF, someone please tell me if this is the price im looking at.

i also would like some advice on which pads and rotors i should get to get rid of this squeel i get, its shocking, worst ive ever heard on a car.

i dont really wanna replace my pads as there only 90% warn, but this squeel is driving me crazy!!

any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Yeah definitely a rip off. If it's your pads depending on brand they should cost you $150 to $250 for the front pair for something decent and machining the front rotors shouldn't be more that $50 for the front either.

Pads maybe $200-400 for set of 4, rotors maybe $600-1000. So depending on what you're getting the price could be ok. Are the rotors truly warn, or is that just what they said to you?

Pad squealing is often an installation issue - there has been plenty of threads on the topic.....

if the pads are as meaty as you say and the rotars are that worn.. i would surely get rid of the pads too as they are eating your disks!

and probably too harsh.... sounds to me like you are running something like bendix ultimates.... they squeal like hell and eat rotars for breakfast lunch and tea!

check the pads have the original anti squeel plates on the back if the pads are in there without anything clipped ontot he back, without them they will squeel like all f@#k, you can get some bendix GCT's for around $100 or so, as for your discs, dba only do 4000 series for the skylines, cant remeber exact price but if you go to a few autobarns or repco's you might be able to get some el cheapo discs, even go to nissan to get a price on rotors.

dont be scared go and sus out some prices for yourself.

this is what they said to me, and what has been written on my brake assesment sheet. so i dont really know, i have a lip at the top of my rotor and i always thought it was just that, and apparentally rotors come down in judgement by width??

can the anti squeel pads be seen with the rims and tyres left on?

where is it located?

there is a minimum rotor thickens to achieve road worthlessness (ie if you get pulled over by the popo and there is a huge lip, you are in shit).

there shouldnt be a lip. wearing the rotor down, it will brake like shit as well.

iirc r33 is like 26-28mm thick.

and irrc you can fix the sequel with copper gasket paint.

the price sounds about right.

TRW pads 70$ an axle set (ABS sell these, they are a good road/track pad)

RDA rotors $200-250 per axle set (http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/Rda-Rotors-and-Ebc-Pads-Gro-t282829.html&st=180&start=180)

brake fluid $50 (they would use TRW stuff)

3-5 hours to install the lot and change the fluid $500

you can do all this yourself if you have a couple of tools.

Ye I would probably say that is reasonable for someone to do it. If you go around, look on the forums, go to the wreckers etc then you might be able to buy the parts for a little cheaper. Also they would probably charge you something like $60-80 per hour so the labour charge can add up.

I would do a little looking around to see what parts you 'could' possible buy a little cheaper, and then go from there.

(it's "they're", "worn" and "squeal")

Are the pads 90% or 10% worn. If they are 90% worn (10% remaining), then the squeal will be the wear tab scraping on the rotor.

And, Ruffels, NEVER had a problem with Bendix Ultimates.

if you have a lip on the rotor then it means they are worn. yes you could get them machined to get rid of the lip but that will remove some of the meat of the rotor thus shortening the life even more.

obviously you can also have only used up 10% of your pads and still need new rotors. if new pads are installed with old rotors the rotors are going to keep on wearing. they won't just stop for a while until the pads catch up. and when replacing rotors it is best to put new pads on (or at least reface the pads so they are smooth).

also if the pads or only cheap ones then they can be hard and wear the rotors fast. i know someone who had a set of pads last longer than the rotors.

the anti squeal plates are clipped onto the back of the pads, should swap them over when you change pads, one of my mates got a mechanic to change pads for him, the guy chucked the old ones with the plates still on them, made a horrible screaching noise so i got him some new ones from nissan fixed it up. same with another mate with an r33 same deal, made a huge scraching noise, when i pulled it all apart they were not there, new pads and those plates, noise gone

hmm ok

my pads are only 10% worn, so they have 90% meat left on them.

i will prob never use my car for track day so what pads and rotors should i invest in for decent street use + no noise?

its weird, if i brake hard i get this faint squeel, but if i brake lightly its multiplied by 1000, it sounds like metal sheering. any idea'S?

when you buy pads do the anti squeal plates come with them?

next time you need pads take your rotors down to your local brake place, try find a place that isnt a major dealer like midas or some crap like that.... find an actual brake and clutch dealer who deals more with trade rather than retail.

give them the rotors for a machine and let them decide if they are beyond the minimum thickness or not, also let them sell you a set of replacement rotors, seriously shouldnt be a grand worth of rotors... not even half that. trade price earlier this year i got a set of RDA slotted rotors for my evo at 200 a pair, i believe RRP was another 100 ontop. Plus, you cant need 4 bloody rotors... atleast one pair front or rear will have another machines life in them....

as for the squeeling, check ur sqeal shims as stated already or just leave it as your brakes still have alot of meat. if your shims are there and it bothers you that much do a machine and buy a better quality pad IE ferodo (i hate bendix with a passion)

shims that the word i was after, right on the tip of my tounge, and nope they dont come with pads you've got to buy them from nissan, if its very loud on light braking and not much at all on heavy braking then id bet on there are no shims, you dont need to replace you pads to put the shims on just pull the wheel off get your head in there and have a look

have a quick look at this found it on google search -

Sounds like all the symptoms of hard pads. They wear your rotors faster and cause a squeal from the pad back rubbing against the caliper - especially on light pedal effort.

You can cure the noise by taking the pads out, cleaning the back of the pads and shims. Putting a thin layer of COPPER grease on the BACK-ONLY of pads and shims then put back in.

Be careful not to get grease on rotor or front of pads - at all. (ie. do not think it is by any means acceptable to allow grease onto front of pad and then wipe off)

I have this on my car with DBA4000 rotors and RB74 pads (hard) and they used to squeal all the time - now very little issues. IMO RB74 pads are too hard for fast street, I will be changing to Bendix ultimates.

If your rotors are too thin you might want to purchase the RDA ones from group buys.

what does the copper grease do? stops vibrations or somthing?

i seem to get an abnormal amount of brake dust, as in a huge amount over the period of one week.
