So After All The Hype, Speculations Etc, Is The R35 Gtr What It's Cracked Up To Be?

Recommended Posts

That's exactly what Jeremy Clarkson said, but I tend to disagree.

The R8 is a very sexy looking car, turns way more heads than the R35.

I was in an R8 V8 the other day as a passenger, never hurt the back of my head on a leather seat before.

I tell you what, the instant power of the N/A V8 just belts on.

Anyway here's my 2 cents.

If you're single and prefer young women, they like the R33 the best.

:P

??? Why do young women like the R33 GTR best?

Because they have never seen an R8!

I've seen one in Perth. Drove along side it over down a one way street with annoying speed bumps.

Sounds quiet, very space-agey looking, like it came out of a big Jelly mold.

He went over the bumps much faster than me, but then I've got coil-overs. Must come from factory faily soft? Seems all wrong for a super-car...making it like a sofa?

I like my cars, street and tough; a rough diamond. These super-cars are fast as hell but somehow I don't find them charming or likeable, just like their owners no doubt. :D

R33's aren't THAT expensive!

Yeh, it's amazing, soft like a sofa yet corner better than the bumpiest of the bumpy coily's.

Dude, you so need to drive a supercar! You will be charmed, I can assure you.

one thing i'll say is that, i always preferred the R8's look based on pics, i told myself if there was the option i wouldnt even look twice at a GTR, but after seeing both in the flesh, the decision would be much harder. the R35 isnt a photogenic car, but after being in tokyo for a few days and seeing countless amount of ones on the street, u really come to understand they are a f**king stunning looking car in the flesh, i've seen R8's in the flesh as well, great looking car, but they are represented pretty well in the pics.

Hi fellas,

Long story short...I'm now 28 years old, working very hard and am often away from home...I am married, have a loving wife and expecting my first child in a few months.

Now my story with cars...my first sports car was the amazing 300ZX, then I went to a R33 GTS-T, then a Silvia S15 SpecR and now I have a R33 GTR Vspec. At my age, I'm pretty much am thinking of purchasing myself possibly what I call "the last sports car" before it's all family-oriented as I do not go to the track often and frankly don't really have much time to spend driving the thing.

I have been thinking long and hard, I have basically two options...to keep the R33 GTR Vspec for now and drive it for the next 2-3 years before upgrading to something European like an Audi R8 or possibly much longer down the track, a Ferrari or Porche and I'll call it a day and won't ever own another sports car ever. However, I have a soft spot for Japanese imports...always have and always will. I have a couple of mates that can afford to buy and maintain the fairly new R35 GTR and was thinking of selling off my R33 GTR, add some extra coinage and buy the R35 GTR and stop it there.

So my question is...is the R35 GTR worth it...I believe a brand new one would be in the vicinity of around $140K AUD, does this sound right? Secondly, if it were to be the final sports car that I would own - would it be worth it? Like I mentioned, I won't have the time or interest in modifying it no more like I did to my previous R33 GTS-T and Silvia S15, so it'll be left stock as a rock...please help me decide...after always wanting one, I don't know but the R33 GTR just doesn't tickle my fancy no more...I think I'm getting too old...the thought of fatherhood really does scare me sometimes... :D

Thanks fellas...

SM

No disrespect dude, but i gotta ask this. I've been a member here a bit before you came and i remember some of your first threads. First one was about P-plate laws affecting current P platers. I read it cause i was in a similar situation and remembered you since then. You had your P's the same time i did. (edit: i just read you said you were 28, so did you get your license when you were 23-24?) Since then a few of your threads really stood out so I remembered you well; the "Can i import a Calsonic Skyline" thread.

Anyway to cut to the chase i've read a lot of your threads since you make threads quite regularly and i don't understand how you can afford a brand new R35 GTR or possibly "a Ferrari/R8 down the track".....not questioning your financial situation, but going from cars from around the same price range "10k-20k" and then reading last year you saying you couldn't afford rego on the car and made a thread asking what would happen if you didn't pay it, to suddenly a year later saying you can afford exotic supercars i gotta ask your secret??

Sorry if this offends you, it aint ment to, i just call it how i see it and was just wondering?

So true, the R35 is just butt ugly in photo's. You see it from a certain angle it looks sick, you go and take a photo from that exact spot and the photo comes out looking boring as all hell and terrible. I don't know whats wrong with the R35 but it is so absolutely unphotogenic. I think the 370Z looks like rubbish in photo's too but comes out quite nice in the flesh. (at least the one's with custom mags).

I would prefur a R8 but us Aussies get raped too hard on taxes and overcharging these $120,000 US dollar cars end up costing AU$300,000 new its a joke. The R35 is a great car which is awesome as a everyday car and ultimately it depends on what your after, I prefur a everyday driver right now, would love a more exciting engine like the R8(V10) though.

Just to be thorough, I went & had a look at a V10 R8 today which had a few options on it (Carbon pack, titanium wheels etc) &

they are one sexy car. This one is Black with 280km on it & is going for $380k +ORC! Absolutely gorgeous car.

Makes the R35 look like a bargain, but if I had the money I know which car i would rather be rolling around in.......... 0000

(they are rings - not tail lights!)

$380k wow what a rip off.

And US$165,000 for brand new R8 V10 in USA including carbon, wheels & leather.

Thats only AU$183,000 the same price we pay for the R35

Talk about Audi raping us, even after you put on luxary tax and all the rest you don't end up at $380k, they should be $260,000 or so. Just ripping us off cause they can.

Sounds like he works in the oil field. Could be pulling in decent coin doing that although it's a hard game, may not be paying tax.

Also bear in mind lots of people in WA have been fortunate enough to have made a lot of cash though sheer luck out of the housing boom.

Having said that I earn decent money in the oil field, and whilst yes at 31 have enough cash saved to buy 35 off the showroom floor, I would never consider it. I don't have any equity in a house, and I want that money to stay saved if I get married etc or buy a house in the future. Waste in on a toy no thanks. I'll put a few grand into my 33 for fun but not spending 150+ k on car, if I spent that I'd be poor again! lol As for buying one on a plan? No thanks the depreciation would be insane.

Yeh, it's amazing, soft like a sofa yet corner better than the bumpiest of the bumpy coily's.

Sure it's got active suspension hasn't it?

How chuckable and driftable is it though? :D

A 'pure' driving experience?

I dunno, it's just strange, i'm curious to see what Kevin says. I have a few friends in big dollar jobs (mining, special forces etc) and while they are all on fantastic money, none of them have gone from owning a 20k car they just purchased to a 200k car in a years time with a family and a lot of other expenses (home loans, car repayments, bills etc). If it is none of our business ill respect that, i just find this thread a bit hard to believe knowing all of his past threads and the questions he has asked over the years; mainly to do with cosmetic modifications to his skyline and nearly no performance modifications.

True, but some people have made shed loads of money the last few years out of the various asset bubbles. I knew one guy who spend a few years in Dubai as some sort of contruction manager and left there with a few mill...so much money sloshing about it was ridiculous.

Also known people doing the sort of job I do who are quite happy to blow ALL their cash on cars. Knew one guy working in Saudi who bought an new Aston Martin for cash, but still lived w/ his mum. Still I don't think as a decently paid worker in the oilfield you could afford house, family AND R35 at 28 unless you had been able to take advantage of the house boom also...many have by sheer good fortune, and now sit on equity of a mill or more.

I think i should start hanging out with you so you get me into a different career :P

But yeah you are right, maybe he has come into some huge amount of money due to this economic crisis in the last year, or he is speaking shit lol.

The R8 is much prettier than the R however pics just don't do the Datsun justice. I recall the launch night so clearly, the first time I laid eyes on one. Although I had many warnings from buddies over east "it is nothing like the pics" and "photos don't do it justice" I was still not prepared for what I was about to see, I was gob smacked, in some ways I felt a little emotional about it.

That night, I also had my very first drive but that's another story.

Jap cars are ideal for people who can't afford European cars, J I didn't have a choice in the matter for two reasons. 1. I have a GTR fetish and 2. ANY euro equivalent is way way and then, way out of my budget, and I can assure you I didn't want to spend so much on a car however the GTR is the bargain of the decade, I am in WA and we get hammered with extra stamp duty here making a GTR cost $185. What a bargain! Now that I have got to know the new R like the old R I have to say it is worth every cent and then some, in fact if it was 100k more it would still be awesome value! (not that I would have been able to save that many pennies) Consider the other cars in that performance category, they are very few and typically will cost half a million bucks in the west. It is a bonus that the 35 is quicker than most things (now I just have to learn to drive a very different car)

And this question: "suddenly a year later saying you can afford exotic supercars i gotta ask your secret??"

There are many possibilities, lotto, family coin (including marriage) sale of other assets, investments that went well, an inheritance or maybe a new career as a bank robber and that would make it a tax deductable business expense right? (and the LC Tax…) For me it is about how hard (and smart – not very) prepared to work – that will control what results are achieved. After waiting 9 years to full fill my R dream, It was in 2000 when I got my first, I would have been mid 20's, admittedly a seven year old used car is not a patch on the new one but a 28 y.o. could do a 35, however not via finance, I just looked up the repayments on the Nissan web site eg: $185K @ 7% with no deposit or residual will commit you to $4326.45 per month for 4 years

BTW I think people offering advice on any car need to declare their level of experience with said model, I am convinced some authors have not driven the R35 enough to really get to know it, do they even own one? In fact they seem like they have not even had a ride in one. Those posts really stand out!

Seriously if you are passionate about GTRs and haven't had a chance to check out a 35 let me know…. NO YOU CANT DRIVE IT :P

I have to admit, it IS NYE (actually, it's aft (for us nautical inspired peeps)) but the R35 has been playing on my mind for some time...

While I am happy to admit that I do not earn the coin that sums up to an R35, my very sly self can admit that there is only a few years between what I'm earning now and what will enable me to live a most prosperous life... To say I have my life sorted is probably an understatment (but we all know how that can change VERY quickly) So I HAVE been thinking about a supercar of some sort for myself... this of course comes after the house and probably 2.2 children or whatever I have to cut them into...

my first choice, for many MANY years, far before the R35 was even gracing sci-fi pages with its artwork, was a Lotus... it started with the Elise, but was soon destroyed by the Supercharged Exige... but getting into that damn thing was fking annoying! It's a great sports car, but unless I'm driving to the track, my fat ass would never forgive me!

I would more then likely find excuses to NOT drive the vehicle then the opposite...

I'm not really sure I'm a fan of GTRs exactly, I've never owned one and to be honest, I don't plan on it. They aren't great for drifting or motorkhanas, which are, to me, the most fun you can have in a vehicle... While I've been toying with a new R32 GTR daily lately, I'm really not sure where it would end... the missus is (as we're all WAY too familiar with) the last word on all our decisions... a 33 drift car, 32 daily and 35 weekender... IF I could afford such a life, it STILL sounds like I should be admitted to some kind of hospital :P

Whatever the new year holds, if it happend to hold an R35 then I certainly wouldn't be frowning :P

In the end, I AM a fan of super cars, and if I could afford even the cheapest one, I probably wouldn't have a problem with it!

Hi all,

Been following this forum for a year or so.. So heres my 2 cents.. I can afford to buy a GTR / R8 / 2nd hand Gallardo etc these are the only cars that currently float my boat :P The thing is i'm a tight ass so i follow the 2nd hand market pretty closely. The 2nd hand GTR market currently is rediculas, you have 5-10k cars at $169-$179k. They have all been on the market for months some 6 mnths and don't sell. There are new ones for the same or less.. Check carpoint $169,000 drive away.. So my point? well i won't touch a 2nd hand GTR till there around the $140k <5000k price point.. Hmm the R8 starts at an unbelievable price nearly 300k for a car with the same engine that comes in the rs4 ( $160k new, $120ish now). I've put offers on 2 R8's for $180k with <5000 ks both sold just over that price $190+$195, the others available have all been for sale for months again and start around the $225k price? OOOOOOh Gallardo's hmm i'm happy to pay $200ish got close at $220 for a redish one but it sold!! Now i can't rember why i started this now but i think the point was, that for me the GTR is a great supercar starting point ( i had a GT3. Fun but not that fast.. Actually i think my 1098 and r1 make em all feel a bit slow ) however we do get raped in Aus price wise so i want to cover my ass a bit with the depreciation thing on any car. I really believe the 2nd hand sellers out there at the moment are dreaming at the prices they want ( oh no i've never launched it, absolutly been babied... um why'd u by it then? ). I guess in another 6mnths when they havn't sold it they may realise this and then i'll bite the bullet and get one...However if the others come up cheap i might have to skip it? hope not cause the GTR in the flesh is hot!! mmm black please.... :P

    • I know you don't want to hear this comment, but I can't not say it.  I just can't see 200kw being worth the time and effort. Its like guys with NA cars, putting in headers/exhaust/tune for a massive 20% jump in power. Great, the slow car is still slow and you're down $10,000.  My vote is leave it NA or price in a gearbox upgrade and shoot for at least 300KW, preferably 350KW+.  Now you have a NC that will try to kill you from time to time and will be exciting to drive
    • Ah yep. The main message I want to pass on is, try not to get scared of ghosts when thinking about knock/knock detection.  What I mean is, healthy engines make noise. Knock is also noise. Your knock sensor and ECU combo are trying to determine bad noise from good noise based on how loud the noise is. The factory knock sensors and ECU are not good at doing this.  Modern ECU's are pretty decent at it, however I'd still say that you would want to verify that if your ECU says it's knock, that you actually listen to it and confirm that it is correct.  Are you familiar with the plex knock monitor?  https://www.plex-tuning.com/products/plex-knock-monitor-v3/ I expect you're the type of person that would be very keen to play with something like this. It is great knock detection and you can pop some headphones on and listen to what's going on.  Knock that you've deliberately induced in low load low RPM areas is not really putting anything at risk and is a great tuning/learning/verification tool.  I just thought this was worth mentioning based on the way you were talking about setting up a base map and the Haltech base map settings. There are better ways to spend your time then chasing ghosts and worrying about detonation in scenarios that it is crazy unlikely to encounter it.  I was also wondering, what ECU are you planning to get? Will it be long til you pick it up?
