So After All The Hype, Speculations Etc, Is The R35 Gtr What It's Cracked Up To Be?

BTW test drive a BMW M3 then jump in a GTR and you'll see the difference. One is a luxary sports car and the other a supercar

yep, couldn't agree more. drove a V8 M3 and loved the sound but that was about it. after the 35 it felt soft in suspension and slow. felt like about half the power of a 35...

I know your dealer in Perth...they are exceptional people...and I was at that track day.

If I was to buy an R35 in Australia, Northside in Perth would be the place. Good attitude, great guys :D

yeh we sell more R35s than Magic Nissan down south so we get them coming in more often for oil changes and clutch relearn plus transmitions. just recently JPCs GTR came in for an oil change, had Volk GTCs on it looks nice. noticed it had a WILLALL sump as well.

yep but he sold it back to us cuz he wants the 2010 model. he had the Volk GTCs removed and i think he kept the exhaust for his next one. a few months ago he sold his red R34 GTR and his 600hp 996 911 turbo to us. the R34 is sold now.

Hey guys, ok so I test drove a R35 GTR today...I have to say, it pulls freaken hard from factory...it goes very well but the only thing is, it's really nimble, quiet and somewhat too tamed....do you guys feel this too? I have to say, my R33 GTR feels much more rough and wild...whereas the R35 GTR just doesn't have that GTR Godzilla feel to it...or am I just being bias? However, I really liked it's interior and handling...very very nice.

R33 while being a great car, is at minumum a 98 model being 12 years old, or a 95 model being 15 years old.

Despite misbelief, cars actually have improved :P , engineering in roads cars has came along way over the past decade

Its like a very nice sports infiniti and $150k is a lot of money.

you are 100% right. driven the "old" R8 and it's an awesome car. very nicely made, absolutely gorgeous too, but no where near the performance of the R35. The 35 will comfortably beat an R8, and with a tune, some boost and a mid-pipe it wont even be that close... like I said, R8 is an awesome car but performance wise the 35 is on another level and value wise you cannot even fairly compare them at all....

Have you driven both cars? It sounds like people use brute speed to decide the best cars, what's the point of that on public roads?

Look I love all GTRs including the R35, in fact I've been following it since seeing the prototype for the first time in Japan all the way to seeing the first few examples in the UK including the one tested by Top Gear. But the R8 is absolutely gorgeous and its a driver's car.

Plus, the OP cannot afford it.

yes I have driven both. and i've owned an R35 and imported 2 others. as my post said, I thought the R8 was an awesome car, but performance and value wise the GTR has it beat. I didn't mention any other criteria. I didn't say one was a better road car than the other. read what I said. R8 is gorgeous, nicely made, awesome car BUT no where near the performance of the 35... leave it up to the individual to decide which car they like more.

I think it's disappointing that EVERYONE is cashing in on the R35 wave.

Tuners, dealers, body kit manufacturers, performance parts suppliers, ECU suppliers, the Government and so on.

Why is everything SO expensive related to the R35. I'll tell you why, it's called profiteering.

despite aftermarket parts being expensive for the R35, look at it this way. Nissan has put a lot of money in Research and Development in the R35 to make the standard car as good as it can be like a Ferrari or an Audi R8 so the next step is surely exxy but this also stops people trying to make cheap shitty parts for the R35 as they do in our usual R32, R33 and R34s, GTST or GTRs. its just like trying to modify a Ferrari or Lamborghini; same thing.

the aftermarket parts are expensive because even aftermarket companies are putting their effort into making a part an upgrade rather than sending its power backwards from factory specs, just like Honda's S2000; why is it so expensive to modify? because the proper parts need proper R&D to increase its performance rather than downgrading. some aftermarket parts isnt as good as factory parts on High-Tech cars these days and some of us have seen this happen.

its expensive for a good reason in a way, think about it...

Of course I read what you said, but its kind of vague to be saying that one car is supremely better in performance than the other without actually test driving either car in similar conditions. The R35 is the better bang for buck, so obviously more people will have opportunities to drive it. The R8 is on a different scale in both quality and price. Its target market is probably not on the track but for the road, hence its performance should be judged for the road.

Exactly, they'll pick what feels better, based on that probably assumption the R8 is a worthy if expensive alternative appreciated by those who have tried a variety of high quality sports cars.

Few people here are ever going to explore the full potentials of the R35 beyond the road and some track activities, even business garages wouldn't invest too much into it unlike those with huge wallets in Japan and America.

I found insurance quite reasonable. About $2k. My monaro was about $1k (exposure to them was probably $40k witht he munro) so the R35 at 4x the exposure ($160k) and only double the premium, insurance is a bargain when you think about it. As for the tuning tools, i just think it's simple maths. How many tuning products (cobb or haltech) do you think they will ultimately sell vs other more abundant cars? It's probably hundreds vs thousands of units. I do agreee that the R35 tax exists, but by the same token there are so many vendors coming on board (trying to tap the market) there are new options coming online just about every day. It's great! I say get on board now why the 35 is still relatively great vs any other car out there. Best bang for buck around (in terms of new cars anyway).

Ok update fellas. I have made the decision to sell my R33 GTR Vspec and get a R35 GTR. Now, I need some guidance from those that have traveled there first, where is the cheapest place to get one? At the dealers, import one myself or where? I want to get one in the next 2-3 months. Please help.

I dont understand how you step from a 20k car to a 160k car lol.

My r33 Vspec is worth more than $25K, however, the answer is easy bro...been working hard, so it's time to buy perhaps my final sports car...before it's all wife, kids and business. You know how it is.

Best bet is to search the ENTIRE Country for a good low km ADM GTR.

When you want to buy a particular one you have decided on.......get it checked by an Nissan High Performance Centre before buying it re: Warranty, no Launches done, VDC not turned off etc........(I was quoted $750 for this check, but mine was paid for by the dealer I bought the car from)

Once you have bought it....MAKE SURE you read the ALL 3 Owners Books carefully, as Nissan are VERY anal, with what you do to the car.

Before you worry too much about purchased price, get a spreadsheet out and work out the total cost of ownership over say three years. Finance (if applicable), rego, insurance, fuel, maintenance, etc etc. When you add it all up you will see a huge number. Then factor in depreciation too. It will make you realise that paying +/- $10k for the purchase price now isnt such a huge deal. Get the one you want, in the condition you like with the right k's.

    • Well, hydraulic lifters will get noisy if they are dirty/fouled in some way, and exactly how that manifests will depend on exactly what schmutz is where. There is a procedure on here somewhere for dismantling and soaking/cleaning them. Replacing them with new is about 50% of the work and about 5% of the money!
    • Thanks for the reply @GTSBoy this is is a hydraulic lifter engine. Yea right i did not realise the lifters were supposed to be compressible while installed. I could push them down but i had to lean almost my while body weight on them.  I have never heard of a lifter/ lifters ticking only at hot idle and getting worse the hotter it gets. I have owned a few jdm cars with noisy lifters. This noise is slightly more subtle, it is more of a sharp gentle metalic tic than the solid and more loud tapping I've heard on lifters. I have used a metal rod, alloy tube, hose and stethoscope and could not find the source of the tick. But it appears to be loudest on the actual engine block behind the exhaust cam gear and next to the oil filter. I had mate (40 year old mechanic) go over it with me and he couldn't find it either..  Could it be a cam seal issue of some sort?  Cheers  
    • This seems problematic and unlikely at the same time. Vanilla RB2Xs have hydraulic lifters. They do have "zero" clearance, but only when running with oil pressure inside them. When not running, you should be able to compress them and obtain heaps of clearance. RB26s and Neos have solid lifters. They should have ~0.3mm and ~0.5mm on the inlet and exhaust respectively. If they have zero clearance then bad things are happening. With nothing else being wrong, it would mean that the valves would be held slightly (ever so slightly) open when they are supposed to be closed and it should have all sorts of problems when running, caused by leakage in/out through the valves. Or, zero clearance can indicate severe valve seat recession. None of it is good. Have you used a piece of hose as a stethoscope to try to localise the noise?

Did anyone ever find out what it was?  I have checked/ replaced Injectors Coils checked Lifter clerance (is at zero) Checked Cam lobes Replaced exhaust gasket and studs Would appreciate any advice this is driving me nuts
