ADR25 (anti theft steering locks) states... "ADR 25 requires that the normal function of the engine only occurs when the ignition lock is in the engine on position"

in other words if you can remove the key and the engine runs it would be illegal

this is the closest thing to a definetive answer I have found

however most pit inspectors dont seem to mind so I wouldnt worry

I wonder if you could argue that the engine shutting down after 45 seconds automatically is not 'normal function of the engine'? Probably not, but it'd be better than going... "oh" :(

When I took my car over the pits I left mine running by accident and the inspector told me he would of failed me because of that but he was feeling generous that day and let me off.

So if your going to the pits just turn it off to be on the safe side

I dont see how leaving your car running and walking away is illegal... might be silly to do but not illegal... the police do it everytime they pull you over so what is the distance you can be from the car?? i know that is padantic but please dont say things are illegal unless you are 100% sure on the law.

i dont know if it is or not just saying my 2cents.

i think the reason its illegal is because it is then an insurance liability, walk away with it on someone jumps in you claim...all coz ur silly, that way it being illegal you cant claim= same money for insurers... im just assuming here

But anyways, TT's arent that neccessary unless you take ur car to the track. On the streets, u only really need 30 seconds of turbo timing, u could just leave ur car idling for 30 seconds while u grab all ur stuff.

manual turbo time lol

or you could just install the turbo timer and it would make life alot easier if you dont have stuff to grab every time :P

They are pretty cheap now a days anyway =)

turbo timers are just wankery really. Turbo technology has come pretty far. You would have wanted to be going pretty hard before you started considering leaving your car on for any duration of time. Just a "look at me" thing leaving your car on for 45 sec - anything over a minute, when you have just driven anywhere on the street is generally over kill, unless for some reason you have been on the limiter the whole journey why bother...

Oh and what car did the police commissioner guy have?

Ross I'd guess at an XR6 turbo...

I think the rule is pretty much the same as radar detectors, not illegal to have just illegal to use :P But as said they are mostly wank factor anyway, but nothing wrong with 10/20 seconds if you really want to be on the safe side. My old 33 didn't have one in the 4 1/2 years I owned it & I didn't have any issues, I just left it idling while I sorted my shiz

    • The jack pad placement always had me scratching my head. I only have a small section to work with on both the E90 and E70 (and insert new project car here ) and I could see lining it up to be a bit of a bugger. For me, the E90 is just too low and needs small ramps and then the front centre jack point is a bit tricky to line up (it's half way down the subframe and about the size of a tennis ball, its really hard to see unless your head is on the ground), so I definitely like the idea of not having to do a multi-stage jack and just sliding these bad boys in under the sides. There's only one small point at each corner, so I can't jack AND add a stand on the same corner. Or, maybe I can and I'm too nervous to try. 😟
    • Is this not the biggest deal of all? I was hoping the whole "will slide under cars with skirts etc and lift evenly quickly with minimal fuss" was the entire point of such a device?

    • Yeah I've got one of these, Quick Jack not Quick Lift, but your link looks like a good copy For me, it's better than no hoist, but it is definitely not as good as a hoist  It lifts the car about 60cm which is a nice working height compared to regular stands and it is only under the sills so it doesn't get in the way like regular chassis stands do.  No need to use regular stands, it has a safety lock on it. On the down side it is really heavy/unwieldy to drag into place, and you have to place it after the car is there (no option to drive the car to where the frames are. You need to try and line it up with the proper sill points which is hard as it swings up in an arc and there is surprisingly little adjustment in the distance between the rubber pads for different car lengths. Not a big deal, but in practice a jack + stands is probably quicker. Also there are hydraulic lines to each side and you need either a 240v or 12v source to power it depending on which option you have, I use 12v as I always seem to have a battery around.
    • Finally addressing my catch can and oil setup Plan is to do as much as practical without having to remove the motor or pull it apart. (no back of head to sump drain/breather or oil restrictors) First step is a set of full length baffle plates from Hypertune and a Tomei cam cap stud kit. I could probably have laser cut and bent up my own ones but this took any guess work out
