hahah its funny isn't it. laptimes are the only thing that matter for qualifying but they don't tell much of a story.

as Kel said I ended up staying in the muscle category although a few of the guys I normally race with are allowed to stay in production cars. As it happens its not really an issue so far because with high boost my car is in the top few anyway. It definately should not be but I guess the quick cars stayed home.....so meh.

basically I had another frustrating day.....

P1....car was absolutely diabolical to drive, it oversteered like crazy on the exit of every corner

P2....blew a cooler pipe off, and the car was still oversteering

Q.....4 laps then pulled in because it was too hot.

the cooler pipe was very annoying - once again proving the only people you can trust to work on a race car are yourselves. Lots of good work was done on the car, quickly, last week - but it counts for nothing if they forget even 1 hose clamp :P can't wait till I have a garage and any f**k ups are exclusively our fault!

cars was handling like an absolute bucket of shit (probably made for great photos!), with crazy oversteer out of every corner. I actually pulled in during P1 because it was so bad I though something was broken. Still managed the quickest lap of the day but it was....."tricky". When we went to put new tyres on for qualifying the problem was clear - we had killed the rear tyres at Mt Buller with overinflation - the middle of the tyre was bald but the outsides were OK so I had not noticed (need to always check properly). Anyway - with the new tyres on that problem is well and truely solved, the handling is back to brilliant now. I love a GTR when it is behaving they are soooo easy to drive.

P2 was also over after 5 laps due to the cooler pipe blowing off. Don't get me started again. My race car has been to heaps of workshops and I have never got it back perfect (ie ready to race)

Qualifying was looking OK - car was handling great and going well, but it was still getting hot. I did a couple of laps to warm the tyres then pulled in to get Neil and Scott to check the pressures. Soon as I pulled in the temps climbed, water hit 120 and oil hit 140. I did 2 slow laps to cool down but they were staying up, so I retired.

So....for tomorrow.....I've got no doubt Greg has the quickest car on the grid but I might be able to hold on to second. I qualified 5th but everything in front of me is 2wd so I have a decent chance to take some at the start. But most likely unless the water temps magically get OK I will have to retire after 4-5 laps. I'll try low boost and see if that keeps me in the game.

BTW....the $800 PWR top of the line radiator is exactly as bad as the $350 china radiator. Might as well have thrown $500 on the ground and stomped on it. And to add insult to injury the china radiator was direct fit, and the PWR require heaps of work.

sorry to hear Duncan, but you are there, you are giving it a go. hats off to you for doing it mate - well done!!!!!

from your previous starts on youtube - you nail it, you launch hard and go for gold - you'll do great tomorrow mate, SAU NSW is behind you.

I wish I could be there, 1 as an entrant and 2 as a spectator.

give em hell mate and enjoy the day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hahaha don't worry....I'll give it a red hot go :)

BTW entry is free to the track today, so its a good chance to drop by Oran Park and see some racing before it's goooooooone

Sure this is standard Nissan ducting Mr Scruitineer... :D

Is there nothing race tape (plus cardboard and a texta) cannot do?

IMG_5886.JPG

I'll let Duncan post (cry) about today's racing (mis)adventures.

Long story short the overheating problem is far from solved.

The race one start was the day's highlight though - Duncan pulled off a great launch from 5th on the grid, followed by a quick trip round the outside onto the grass to get past a pesky ute, and in the lead by turn one :P

Also managed the fastest lap (we think) and his best time to date for the Oran Park GP - a 1:19.4568.

Shame the rest of the meet was a write off.

bloody skylines.

umm yeah.

a mixed day today - I started from 5th and was first by turn 1. Had a great tussle with Greg (stretch) over about 4 laps, he was killing me on the straight but I snuk by over the back of the track. unfortunately both the water and oil got hot so I coasted home in 9th. Still had the fastest lap and I reckon I would have finished OK if I did not have to back off.

when I got back to the pits the car was not cooling down at all so I shut it off - turned out I had split a heater hose under the plenum (the water feed for the turbos) and dumped heaps of the coolant.

huge thanks to Neil in particular for burning his hands over and over for about 3 hours changing that hose, it was in an absolute bastard of a spot, heaps of stuff including the starter motor had to come out to change it. Also big thanks to Kel and Scott for helping all weekend, and Steve-o and Mark's excellent gtr pushing abilities.

anyway...the bottom line is the head gasket is badly blown so the motor is coming out for a check and probable rebuild (mainly deck the block and shave the head as I assume they are warped). I have a spare motor pretty much ready so I will be back soon enough - and hopefully without the heat problems.

No probs Mate,,,I tried everything to get you back out there today and I would do it again and again and again. I do enjoy the rare occasion when you snot everybody.

Bloody great start tiger by the way.

Kel's comments about lazy race car drivers motivated me. Bloody rally hoons!!!. :D:D:D

To the PRO clown parts fitter that thinks that tightening the starter motor to with an inch of it's life and no idea how to position hose clamps,,,,YOU SUCK and should work on pushbikes. :P:D:down:

Neil.

you know I cursed your car because you forgot my seat dunc :P NOWITWILLNEVORWINAGAIN!11tY

Is it possible that the water feed hose was the cause of your over heating dramas....e.g sucking air in or not pressurising the coolant system properly?

For what it's worth- he was off to buy you a case to try to make up for that little fark up, but got side tracked.

Stuff ordered gets followed up quicker than smart normally, but race meets screw with the brain and the planning.

Feel sorry for the poor chick married to him :D

    • Any number of different ways. Have the coils draw sufficient current to provide contact wetting. Use different contacts in the switch, either by material or design, better suited to the low current drawn by a relay coil. Etc.
    • Hmm, how does the R34 manage to have headlight relays then without getting excessive carbon buildup on the headlight switch contacts?
    • Not R7R. Meant to type R&R, obviously enough.
    • Bugger "making it look stock". I put one conventional internally fused Hella relay behind each globe. I just pulled the plugs off the back of the globes and built new loom segments with male and female plug parts to match up to the original loom and the globe, and used the original power wires to each globe coming from the switch through the original loom plug to trigger the relays. Ran a big fat (also separately fused) power wire across the front of the car to feed all the relays. It's as ugly as f**k, but it is wedged down between the headlight and battery on the RHS and the airbox and headlight on the LHS, and no-one ever looks in my engine bay, and on the odd occasion that they do I simply give no f**ks for what they think. Fully reversible - not that you'd ever want to. For f**k's sake. It's a Skyline. They made million of the bloody things. We've been crashing them into roadside furniture for 30 years now. There is a negative side effect to putting relays on the headlights. The coil current is too little to properly clean the contacts in the switches and they get blacked up and you have to open them up every couple of years and clean them manually. I have 25 years of experience on this point.
    • I was poking through the R34 wiring diagrams vs R33 and noticed that the R34 has proper headlight relays while the R33 is like the R32 and sends full headlight power through the headlight switch. I'm not afraid of wiring but I really would like to do this in a way that looks OEM (clipping into open positions on the OEM relay box) and also unlike the factory wiring which interlocks the high beam and low beam on the halogen series 1 GTR headlights I want to make it such that turning on the high beams keeps the low beams on as well. Any advice on how to locate the specific connectors + crimp terminals + relays I need? I was thinking one NO relay for low beams and another for combined high + low running off the factory high beam headlight connector. I don't really want to splice into a crusty old probably discontinued factory harness so fully reversible is my goal here.
