98 R34 Audio Install

Hey guys! finally got my skyline!

N/A 98 R34 25GT (Im a P-Plater)

Anywayyy when i bought the car, it just had the stock tape player and the rear speakers were making weird noises, like when thers alittle bit of bass, you hear paper ripping noise(?). I think it may been damaged when it was getting compliancing done.

So my mate bought me a CD Player and Speakers (Sony CDX-GT280 and Sony GTX1640)

I didnt look it up before, and thought it will be just plug and play kinda thing but its not!

I tried looking for tutorials or sumthing like that on the net but cant find any because the links are too old.

and the installations are so expensive! (JB HI FI)

I live in western suburbs sydney, Do you guys know any installers around this area?

how much you think it will cost me for head unit install and rear speakers?

hey mate, its a pretty basic job to get it done, the speaker, power, antenna etc colour code thing should be on the back of the stock tape player... just use that as i guide with the colour code for the new ones manual n go from there... cut the old one out, solder the new wires in plug it all in... put it back together n dun

rear speakers r peice of piss... only thing is in the 34 u will have 2 take the whole parcel shelf out, which means taking the whole back seat out lol... its pretty straight forward tho just a few bolts n awkwardness lol

btw where did u get ur car from??? as i recently traded mine off n i put the dodgy stock system back in lol

oh head unit install at JB etc will be round $80... rear speakers i think were $30 n fronts $50 each... but dun quote me on that lol

Hey mate i just imported a N/A R34 too and i had the stock system in it and have just installed the head unit and am doing the rest of the system atm it really not that hard to do. oh and the sound from your rears sounds like that the speaker may have blown but i may be wrong with that one.

if your not going to re-run new wire and just use the stock wiring for the time being which is the easy option to do i can give you a couple of tips.

1) go down to your local car audio store (Strathfield, Rdya, etc) and by a snap on wiring harness adaptor it seriously makes life so much easier it has all the colours already matched so all you need to do is solder the wires together and run the earth cable to an earthing point.

2) with the rear speakers cause your using the sony 6 1/2 they should go straight in and it is just a matter of re-attaching the wires.

3) if your not to happy doing that yourself then depending on where bouts you are try maybe fairfield car radio they are not to bad if you need a pro to do it.

4) if you dont want to pay someone i am happy to do it for you. it just means coming out my way (JDM Garage in SH)

i just found out i have to get a antenna conversion adapter aswell D:

for now ill try and install the headunit as soon as i get the wiring harness and the adaptor, oh and some soldering stuff i had a crap $5 one and it overheated and broke

the earthing point is the ground wire 4 the head unit... the wire must be attatched to a metal point of the car... it should be the black wire of the head unit

good stuff on trying it urself but if u are unsure bout anything dun do anything till u get advice about it lol... yeh pretty sure every 34 with a stock head unit in it needs an adaptor mine was $20 from jb so nuffin at all... u prolly know this but just make sure u tape over the exposed wires after u joined them n soldered them lol common sense

Yeah you do need an adaptor and if you need an easy earthing point where the gear stick bracket is held in there is a screw which u can use as your earth point and if you wanna be fancy instead of using electrical tape you can use heat shrink.

i had a look behind the original cassette player and it has 2 Adaptors thats going into the casette player, 13cables all together.

I just had a look at the adaptor on Rdya website and it only has 1 adaptor. So do i just buy that one and will have no trouble installing it

or do i have to buy 2seperate adaptors? Ill post a pic soon

if its just the adaptor 4 the sony head unit its simple, just cut the old adaptor out with abit of wire left on it incase u wanna re-install the stock head unit if u sell the car or sumtin... referring to the back of the stock head unit find out which wire is which n wire it appropriatly up to the sony adaptor (make sure the ground wire is hooked up AND grounded before putting it all back together)... the sony head unit should only have one plug n the stockie has 2 plugs... i just thought the sony head unit would come with the wiring plug adaptor thingi???

No, whatever you saw on the website is probably wrong if you actually go in and ask them the pack comes with two different adaptors (one for each of the stock cables) i bought one the other day from ryda it was $12. all the colours have been changed on the adaptor to match whats on your headunit so it should be easy all you have to remember is dont solder the ground wire from the head unit to the adaptor just take it straight to an earthing point as the stock head unit is not grounded through thoses cables it uses a different connection.

so from those 2adaptors from the first pic, the one on the left goes straight into the one from ryda, but what about the one on the right?

i have to cut that one off? and solder it straight on to the sony one?

Finally got it done!

today i picked up a antenna conversion cable, just plug play, easy!

and the wire harness, i soldered it on to the new stereo wires and done!

oh and I used heat shrinks, never knew they exist until today, clean wires, not dodgy electrical tapes

never would have thought it was this easy

now i have to install the speakers

the stock speakers have an adaptor, should i just cut the adaptor on the wires and solder the new wires on that?

and the one with the strip is - and the plain one is + ?

Great thread here mate! I am in the same situation, where I have a Jap Kenwood headunit that only plays audio cd's and no radio. So this thread will prove invaluable once I get around to starting.

nah not installing sub or amp I don't like to too loud lol

I installed my speakers few days ago, it was pretty simple. I juz took the old speakers out and cut the adaptor off the wires

and solder new wires, and that plugs straight to new speakers. I dont know about other speakers, maybe you have to solder the wires to the speakers? :S

thats great that you got everything working and yeah if by the other speakers you mean fronts you can either solder the wire straight onto the speaker terminal or you can get leads with plugs on the end that go straight onto the speakers and then solder that on the the original leads.

are you putting splits in the front or just going for 6 1/2 (Recommend putting splits it sounds so much better)

ive got my new head unit and front splits in, completely forgot about the Adapter for the Radio, also im getting quite a bit of Alternator whine. anyone had this problem after an install before?
