Got a speeding fine around 2 weeks ago 81 in a 60 zone, i've been told that the speed guns can be out by up to 3kms...

Is this true as i have been told that the cop has to take that into account when giving you the speeding fine, it said 81 on the gun and if i was doing 80 i would still have one point left and i wouldn't have to go on good behavior he also wrote down that i was on my opens when it clearly says that im a P plater and my car has p plates all over it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

I know fixed speed cameras are definitely off by 3km, hence the reason for them taking off 3km of alleged speed when you receive the fine.

I don't believe it should be any different with a Laser Gun so if they are not taking off 3km I would fight it..

I think you will find that speedo's are out by on average three to five kilometres not the camera's/guns.

Their accurate right down to the kilometer so 81 is 81 as they use a laser and good for anywhere up to 700 plus meters.

Take it to court(you still get done for 81 if u lose) or pay the fine and behave yourself on good behaviour or take the suspension. Mind you if you drive a modified car it is dicey to be on good behaviour as defects cost points.

Hope it helps..

read up on the australian standards for hand held radar guns that the police use. that should tell you all the info you need

but why are you trying to contest 3klms inaccuracy? - disregaurd that

you could proberbly get off in court due to the police writing down your on opens when your actually on your P's - that might be your only ground to stand on, you'll still cop the 20k's over speeding fine

writing down open when your on p's means nothing...

they will simply re-issue the ticket with another 30 days to pay it...

dates, spelling does not matter a mistake will simply be corrected and a ticket sent in the mail...

as for accuracy, fixed speed cameras use line markings on the road to calculate speed in a meters per second equation. The computer than turns the meters per second into a kilometers per hour reads and bobs ya uncle you got a fine. It works the same way as the speed trap at the drag strip, your trigger the first beam and then the computers counts time until you trigger the second beam and from this reading calculates a kph/mph reading...

So fighting a fixed speed camera fine would be like fighting danny green for a ice cream... They simply produce the two photos and explain the mathematical equation...

As for laser guns, in my experience working with the QPS ive found their very accurate... They can detect a speed as low as 15kph from up to 1km away... To issue you a fine of 81 in a 60 zone the radar must be locked on you for no less than 40metres, which means you were given a very accurate reading/ticket...

So you must have been going 80ish...

Lets say your right and you were going say 79kph... Your still 19kph over the limit, a court is going to smash you over it... If you say yeah i was speeding but i reckon i was going 1 or 2 kph less than the ticket was issued for the court is not going to help you... They will see your trying to avoid a larger demerit and through it out at your cost... Speeding is speeding you have to cop it on the chin and move on, dont do it again...

thanks for all the info fellas, i'll just take the fine. Need to keep an eye on the speedo next time

Or get an overspeed alert lol They were annoying in earlier commodores and on GPS's (A mate turned a work car's on and I was like whats that Fuc^&ing beeping)

lol ... Pretty sure that 3ks isn't going to make a different when your doing 20ks over ...

These topics should be banned ;)

40km/h over the speed limit = 6 months loss of license in Vic

if you were doing 42km over the limit then 3'ks is going to make a huge difference.

that is what he is fighting for..

huh? where did 42 come from

If its a hand held radar then they need to be recalibrated a fair bit.. you could ask to see when it was last recalibrated.. but i have no idea how often they need to be done.. I'd say ur fighting a losing battle.. that n the front of the courier mail didnt help today.

im using it as an example to demonstrate how important only a few km's can mean..

my mistake
