I have a 45V1 on my 20. Tuned by Allstar with a Nistune at 14.5psi (1 bar)

I know the SAFE boost levels of a 45V series turbo is 1 Bar. Steel Compressor Wheel & Ceramic Exhaust Wheel

My question is -

If I increased the boost to 16psi how fast is my turbo going to go down hill.

Keen to know if anyone has pushed the boost with the 33 Turbos beyond 14psi on a Rb20 and how long they have lasted. I barely drive the car (once every 5 weeks at the moment) So if it will last me a couple of years thats good enough for me.

also seeing my car has been setup to 14.5psi with a nistune.. will increasing the boost bugger up my nice tune?

My cousins R33 runs 16psi all day, although his car is tuned VERY well (knock below 20 at all times) the car isnt making anymore power then at 13psi.....maybe 3-4rwkw. Now ask yourself if its worth replacing your turbo sooner for those few kw.

i guess the question is really how hard are you going to drive it? the occasional squirt in theory shouldnt kill it.... the ceramic turbos die from heat not from boost.

more boost is higher combustion temps meaning the ceramic wheel gets a hell of alot hotter which expands like crazy as it meant to and kamikazes itself against the housing.

so really if you only like to give it a little squirt here and there u should be fine, but if u like going on twisty runs you can expect it to pop. as for track work, goodbye turbo.

before I sold my car, (RB20 powered 180SX with R33 S1 Turbo) I had the boost set on 1.15bar (~16PSI) for a whole year, no dramas!

went to 2x skid pads as well, nothing blew.

Did the same thing with my stock RB26 turbos ages ago. Laggy sh!tbox turbos.

Trackdays, national park runs, hillclimbs - no dramas.

If I were you I wouldnt do it though - id buy something new and not have to worry "will it blow up today" unless you have the cash to not care

lol funny how many people have actually had their ones last.... murphy being my best friend i cant say id have the balls lol... im scared of taking mine to wakefield on stock boost.... praying it wont shit itself.

yet as stated, the "will it die today" question will be looming above your head every time you drive it so i wouldnt bother.

saying that, it did have some shaft play, but nothing serious.. can't expect a tight like virgin turbo from a 1993 R33..

but long gone are the days of RB20 ahhaha... I've join the "bigger" boys now LOL

but saying that, I've never dyno'd the car running at 16PSI, I can imagine with the excess heat created and the lack of flow you would be actually making no extra power or actually lose power if the motor start knocking/pinging.

I did have an A/F Wideband on it at 16PSI using CEFF1E's remap, was flat on 12 A/F on full load on a straight in 2nd (yes keeping it in the speed limit  )

Like someone else said no more power is made after 13

If you have seen them run on a dyno at 13 then turn up power curve goes no were and sometimes down.

Having said that i ran mine very high for 2 years no problem as it brings boost on faster i thought.

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
