and also, kms don't mean much for 2 reasons, 1: can easily swap over a dash, 2: comes down to driving. if they are highway kms then a car with 150,000kms could be in better shape engine wise than a car that has done 80,000 of city driving, because the odometer doesn't keep ticking over while a car is sitting in traffic idling. this is why you would never buy an ex highway patrol car. the kms might be low, but they spend a lot of hours sitting on the side of the road with the engine running (so the aircon is going).

I would choose the s14

Currently my girfriend drives a s13 sil80 with a s14 engine in it and it is awesome, much better than the R33 i owned for years and also as good as the R32 with an RB25 in it that i owned prior to that.

As for swapping in a RB25...unless you were going for over 500hp i wouldnt, the sr gives better balance to the car and more urge down low. Stock for stock torque wise we are looking at 275nm @ 4000 rpm in the SR20 and 315nm at 6000 for the RB25 so as you can see at sane speeds the sr will be giving you a lot more. In relation to mods we have found that mod for mod the SR actually responds better than our RB25 did.

At the same stage of modification the SR is infront on torque and only a few Rwkw shy of the RB, given that the engine its self is a weight saving you are probably looking at a better power to weight ratio when placed in the same car anyway. As it ended up the Sil80 was more than capable of just simply driving away from the R33 with little effort. Its only once you start making big power where the RB might show its worth being stronger in the block and head ect

So in short for what it would cost to transplant the stock rb25 in to the s14 you could have a really well balanced torquey sr20 with all the right bits that would destroy the stock 25engined version of the same car. And dont get me started on rb20s lol :)

except get a 180 not an s14 :)

but the s14 has better brakes and turbo....but if you are willing to swap those parts into a s13 that would be sweet too, that said the engine swap from a wiring point of view nearly destroyed my mind.

no way - popup lights are the shiznit, so old school :)

but yes s14s are rad as they are 5 stud and have the bigger brakes/potential to get bigger brakes - but 2nd hand parts arent as common as s13 ones :)

i'm curious to see where you got this info from, as all the info i've seen on the rb25 (in the r33) has the torque being 294nm at 4800rpm, and the s14 engine is 274nm at 4800rpm (s13 is at only 4000rpm). so the rb25 makes 20nm more at the same rpm, and even if you take into account the lower revs of the s13 it would still be the same. but that is only max torque so doesn't give an indication to what it is at much lower rpm. having owned both a s13 and a r33, at low revs the r33 had much more torque than the s13. in fact the s13 felt gutless compared to my SSS pulsar (na sr20) under 3000rpm and it wasn't until you got close to 4000rpm when the s13 would actually start catching the pulsar. before that the pulsar would pull away. but in the r33 it was much better down low. making full boost by well under 3000rpm it was much better down low than the s13.

You may be right on torque figures i just got them off the internets, but in the mean time i found a terrible excel graph i made up to compare my two experiences, i had no torque curve but the power curve tells the story as well, and our sil80 is making 12psi by 2900? In our case the SR is full boost a few hundred RPM before the R33 was.

Both results were in shoot out mode and the same gear so should be roughly compareable both cars had ECU, FMIC exhaust and 12psi

my experience with sr20's is only with the stock t25 bush bearing turbo, so i can only say from my experiences with 1 of the sr motors and not the whole lot. and my 33 was making 14psi by under 3000rpm (was about 2800rpm) on the stock turbo and stock ecu with the timing advanced a bit. i have driven other 33's that were the same as mine, but also driven others that were a bit sad and there was a noticable difference in performance.

Ahh i see ours is a s14 engine with the BB turbo, that would make a world of difference.

this is why you would never buy an ex highway patrol car. the kms might be low, but they spend a lot of hours sitting on the side of the road with the engine running (so the aircon is going).

And what miles are on it are when the engine was tagging the limiter.

I think im gona go the S14, Cause if i got the R32 i would be past considering an eng swap for a 3L so that blows the budget. plus the 32 is heaver.

also can the 180sx head lights go on the s14 like the s14 cause that would look diffent imo plus i do like the pop up lights.

i reckon the best thing to do is test drive both cars and see what fits you more.. i was in the same head space as you when i was buying a 180sx or a r32 gts-t, after all the comparing and driving i myself found the r32 to suit me more and the feel i had for it was better..

that being said the rb20 is a low torque engine however it can take a thrashing all day long and it will still keep going, also the fact that it has solid lifters compared to the sr20 mean’s it can handle a bit off limiter, however if you buy a s14 with an sr20 you can buy rocker arm stoppers..

Both engines/cars have its up's and downs man, if you buy a r32 you can install a rb25 into it later down the track like i did...

but yer as i said at the start i reckon you should take both off them for a drive and see which one you like more. :)

32 with an rb25 ftw. Only if you love the dirty two's. if not go for your other options making sure they are the sr20 versions and not the ca18. the gymps is correct about the rb20 though. For an outside thought, series 5 rx7?

    • UPDATE: Hi all!  As we are getting towards the end of this thread where I’ll showcase final dyno numbers and graph, I wanted to provide an update. Tao from HyperGear has done an amazing job building the custom divided T3 housing for the G30. Communication was flawless, price was great, and now the housing is estimated to arrive in 7-10 days! Very very pleased. I must add, if someone is looking for an affordable turbo and end up reading this thread, I would recommend HyperGear.
