Hi guys!

After 6 or 7 weeks of my car being off the road due to a blown turbo it is finally back!

The turbo itself is an equivalent to a GT3060 with a journal bearing, which was designed to retain the stock turbo's response but with more power. No more nasty turbo whine!

Of course with these things one thing leads to another, and I ended up having a custom intake made, custom 3 inch mandrel exhaust, and the dump pipe from ebay fitted as well

So far I haven't had much of a chance to test it out (just driving to work and back today) but once it gets up and going it absolutely hauls ass!

Here's some pictures of the intake and exhaust:

Big thanks again Andy and Cam for helping get the rebuild sorted, and to Scotty and Craig for offering their help on how to get the damn turbo out!

cheers, Glenn

Good stuff Glenn!

Intake looks interesting.... can you get a pic of the back of it where it goes to the turbo by any chance?

Have pics of your turbo if you want them (or want them posted).

Happy to hear it does what you want.

Peak boost is at what rpm?

Nismo suspension eh? Nice isn't it!

Looks good Glenn.

Nice work on the exhaust. Looks to be sitting nice and close to the body.

The intake loos good. mmmmm

We just need to show you how to get a little more air in the front and open up the air box.

Cheers

Andy

Yeah Cam post up the turbo pictures if you like, I forgot to take any before I took it to the shop. I'll get some photos of my busted one up as well.

Peak boost seemed like about 3500, not too sure though. I'll have a better look tomorrow on the way to work :D

And yes I was pretty happy to find out about the nismo suspension when I went over the pits for the initial rego. It's a very good ride without being harsh at all.

I'll try and get some better photos of the intake... it's hard to see exactly what's going on down there. I'll try and wedge the camera down the gap and get a photo from there, might show things a bit better.

I was thinking a cheap powerduct style mod might be the next thing to get done Andy... I know there's a thread somewhere how to do it for $10. Is the stock air filter any good? Or am I going to see some better performance from a K&N panel filter or similar?

The K&N is maybe a little better but the I am sure the basics are with 1-2% as good.

Hey Glen,

Looks good....I like the exhaust.....must be quite with 2 mufflers? Where did you put the cat?

Is the guy that made up the suction pipe willing to make more? If so how much? Does he need the car to make em up?

:P I think you mean "I'll get some photos of THE busted up turbo before I send it back to Andy", yes?

3500rpm sounds good.

Just interested to see if there are 2 90degree bends in the intake or what he has done at the bottom.

Where did that damn CAT go..........

dead%20cat.jpg

Just kidding :P

Yeah there's no cat atm.... but I've decided to get one put on. probably in a couple of weeks after I evaluate whether I like how noisy it is or not. Too much boominess around 1500-2000rpm, which sucks driving at 80kph.

Cam, tried getting some pics of the intake just then but the engine is still too hot to get my hands near it and I have to go out, but definitely tomorrow!

Here's the old turbo:

DSC00618.JPG

Doesn't even look like 1 fin is still intact.

I did a little bit of testing on the way home last night. Boost starts building a tiny bit around 2200rpm but really doesn't get going until 2500rpm. At that point it picks up very quickly and seems to hit full boost around 3500rpm. If I had a boost gauge I could confirm if it maintains boost until redline but I can't see why it wouldn't be, it certainly feels like it does.

Drivablility is still a bit of a concern. It takes a little bit of dancing with the right foot to get medium levels of acceleration, because the car is either bogged down at 2000rpm or hauling ass above 3000rpm. Most notably driving around suburban streets and 60 zones can be a pain to get to the speed limit without either taking ages or looking like you're in a street race. I live in a hilly area and trying to get to 60 and stay there is hard with the gear in 'D' while going up a hill. It will just take some practice I guess. Don't get me wrong though, I'm still preferring bucketloads more power than worrying about this slight niggle.

Is there any way to reprogram when the gearbox shifts/downshifts gears and under what load? Is this possible with an aftermarket ecu or p.i.ggyback? Or will it be a parameter that can be changed once reflashing the stock ECU becomes available? If possible I think this minor problem could be programmed to go away.

With the suction pipe I couldn't even see with my own eyes exactly which direction it goes in... I need one of those little cameras on a bendy stick that seem to always get used in the movies. I'll give the mechanic a ring tomorrow and ask if he can explain somehow...

Also about getting other pipes done, he said that he'd have to have the car to fit it - there wasn't much clearance, as low a 5mm in some parts. On the other hand, he mentioned the idea of sending my pipe off to get exact duplications made. Not sure of the quantity required and cost involved in doing that though. And I've paid for the job but still haven't got a copy of the invoice yet, but I'll ask how much labour was involved in making the pipe.

To the best of my knowledge there is no turbo with this designation. What sort of hp output is quoted for this turbo?

It is a 76mm exhaust and a 60mm compressor wheel.

It was a new one to us also. Not sure on the power put.

that still doesn't sound correct.

A GT3076 is most likely to be a 60mm turbine and 76mm compressor and is a 500hp turbo. Capable >300rwkw

There a few 56mm turbines floating around (which have been used on older style IW GT3071's so unless you buy the genuine garrett item there is a bit of mix and match possible.

The turbo looks more like a 2860 aka 2530 so more like 230rwkw but they have clearly machined out a bit for the new turbine.

That sounds about right, mine is a similar spec bush core and puts out around that power. Unfortunately the rear housing wont support much more than that. If you go bigger turbine you just gain lag.

I have 4 psi at 2000 revs which is quite good for a 220awkw turbo I think.

Most of the highflowed M35's in Sydney have been the 3071 (76 exhaust & 71mm compressor)

It took a lot of questions and pushing to get this size made but it is definitely a 76 exhaust and the compressor is smaller than a 71mm so we are confident the turbo builder has made a 60mm opening.

The stock M35 turbo is too big to use any 28turbo parts.

    • If that's the wiring from the factory, I'd be inspecting the loom everywhere.   Any signs of that anywhere else, and seriously, I'd get rid of the car ASAP before the electrical gremlins make it worthless, or it goes up in flames on its own. That is scary how that insulation is failing!
    • I should note too as I have all 4 wheel speed inputs to the emtron I now have the emtron controlling the attessa solenoid for 4wd/traction and launch control strategies.
    • It works quite well with the adjustibility within each of the programs of the turbolamik. Essentially p1 is drive and lockup comes on like a normal driver.  But in program 7 I have customised it to not request the lockup clutch to engage until something like 6500/7 when slip was the lowest.
    • Yep, I like that. The tags are only on the first post of a thread and we don't get huge numbers of new threads. Also, I plan to add some more report types and we could have a member report type like 'review tags' then members could flag if they thought a topic wasn't tagged correctly.  No way man, I dig the input. Thanks!
    • It's a valid thought. There's not exactly that functionality already (when creating a thread) - that's where the OP can use/create any tag they want. We'd have to come up with a way for the user to request their tags get reviewed or something. Otherwise the mods would have to review every new post's tags (for those that have them, anyway). There's kind of that functionality already exists to some extent, post facto of starting the thread, where the OP or any other user could report the post to admins, and request that tags get reviewed. We could do this already, and any user could already have made such a request. To make it a part of the forum proper, it would require an initial and an ongoing education programme, so that people know that it's a thing. OP based tagging/request for review would also require at least some (probably most) of the user base to be told that it's a thing they can do. Both of these things probably wouldn't spread too far and/or get used very much. If it was the standard approach on a lot of different sites, then it might do, because people would be used to it. Prank's approach to this differs from my original thought, by leaning into tagging. Which is fine - it's possibly better than what I originally suggested. In fact, I just went to the R32 GTR wiring diagram thread and added tags, including "Library". That's probably a good way to use tags and the idea of a library. We just have to drag together an (organised!) index of threads or posts that have that tag. I have yet to do any of my own follow up by pursuing worthy threads and posts and reporting/marking/tagging them for the library, such as the @Sydneykid stuff I was talking about, and possibly any amount of @Lithium 's and others' posts. At least if I tag them Library, we'll have a start.   Back to @Wazmond's idea as it relates to @PranK's, we might have some sort of a list of tags that are already used to scrape for this library. I'm not entirely sure how that would be presented or used, particularly if it got long. But it's yet another idea!   cheers
