Alrighty, I have a fairly modified R33 with HKS GT-RS turbo, all supporting mods, making around 255rwkw. Only had it a few months, bought with all the supporting mods. Engine has been rebuilt with forged pistons, race bearings, reconditioned head, new timing belt, etc. As soon as i got the car, had it serviced, oil went black pretty much straight away. Just had it serviced yesterday, and oil went black after a short drive to the shops and home. The oil is not super sludgy or have chunks of stuff in it or anything just goes really dark, then a little bit darker over time.

Car runs fine, current tune is a bit rich, apart from that all seems good.

Anyone know why on earth the oil goes black literally instantly? Mechanic said something like "exhaust leak that could be contaminating the oil??????" I am not sure if thats what he said, as i am VERY far from a mechanic so might have heard him wrong.

Oil used is Mobil 1, pretty expensive, but happy to pay for good oil.

Its my second modified GTST, my first one, the oil always stayed super clear until next service.

Oil pressure always fine, car has a Trust Oil Cooler if that matters.

I am not a technical person when it comes to engines, so apologies if i have excluded several bits of crucial information.

I believe it's a good thing for the oil to go black. That means that the oil is doing its "detergent" function, cleaning up the insides of the engine.

I would recommend you contact the Mobil Oil Technical line (find details at mobil.com.au).

Gday Terry, yeah that the exact same thing i asked him!!!!! He laughed at me when i asked too.

Yeah i would assume it would slowly go black over time, but instantly seems like a bit of a problem to me, but i dont know anything about the subect so need the pro's (the super experienced skyliners on here) to help me.....

Thanks for the post blink_elk, so as the oil is doing its detergent function, does that mean after a few more oil flushes the engine will be clean on the inside, or once its dirty it stays dirty??? Yep silly question, but i honestly have no idea! Cheers.

if the oil is going black straight away then it means that there is still a large amount of old oil still in the system, and i would be willing to be that the oil cooler is to blame. depending on how the piping is run to it, there is a good chance that when the oil is being dropped a lot of oil is staying in the cooler and not draining out. this means that when you then run the car the new golden oil is mixing with this black oil and turning your new oil black.

no amount of 'detergenting' of the oil should be turning the oil black in such a short period of time.

i'm honestly not sure, but removing a line would be one way if the cooler doesn't have a bung.

it would really come to how the piping is run as to whether the oil drains out when you drop the oil or not. if the cooler is mounted lower than any point in the return line then oil will stay in the cooler. the other way to get the oil out if there is no bung or without pulling a hose off would be to unscrew the cooler and simply lift it in the air and all the oil will run out, but pulling a hose off would probably be easier, just a little bit more messy

the problem with that though is playing with the hoses each service, will overtime cause new problems to arrise.. worn threads, loose fittings, rounding fittings etc.

maybe later down the track, get a hose dude, enzed, link, etc... to put a drain tap in one of the hoses, that way your not touching the fittings all the time and if it starts to leak, it can be removed or replaced in minutes without requiring a new hose to be made, a new oil cooler or a new adaptor.

Yep will need access to the lines dude.

My cooler is flat under the car, which is not good for hitting ripple strips, but awesome for oil changes. So, simply unscrew the lines and it all comes out. I do it every third change or so.

But in your case, you would have to take off the front bar.

The other option might be to unscrew the lines where they mount to the block on the sandwhich plate. That should pretty much be your lowest point so gravity will do the work. Not sure in a 33, but in the 32GTR its an absolute b!tch to get your hand in there.

I dont bother with the oil in the cooler, but it doesnt go black, it only ends up slightly darker then new oil, I think the cooler holds around 1.5ltrs and when I drain the sump I put in around 5 or 6 litres depending on if its before a track day or not, so its getting 80ish% of fresh oil and a new filter on a change.

My oil does smell like hydrocarbons when its getting dark and ready for a change but Im told that higher boost does this.

On a lighter note I put the car in for a tune and have to replace my wastegate and exhaust manifold as they are both fubar

the lines into the oil cooler point upwards do they? best idea would be to mount it so the lines hang down like I did but its a bit late now.

if the lines exit upwards you only have 2 options to empty the cooler:

1/ undo the lines and turn the car up side down until the oil stops coming out of the cooler

2/ take the oil cooler off the car and just turn it upside down.

2 is more convenient normally

i dont know just spit balling

if u have a remote oil filter could u take it off and run compressed air through the lines to push the oil through the oil cooler and in to the block.

other wise have the oil cooler mounted so that the fittings point down and fit a T piece with another oil line 4 oil changes

or ur mechanic is ripping u off by putting super cheap mineral oil in. if all else fails run a flush through the system

    • Hey guys. I have a 400R on its way to Australia from Japan currently and have a few questions I’m hoping others may be able to help with.   Wondering if anyone here has had any luck getting the Sat nav unit to work in Australia!? Assuming the Stereo is as simple as a band expanded and tv won’t work?  Seeing as they’re based off a Q50 which is Aus delivered is there any way to link that system to the nav? Nav modules and head unit are different part numbers and appear slightly different at the rear with plug ins etc. can I put my xtrail sd card into the rv37 and will that convert the maps or update to Australian? Has anyone got any advice here?     also has anyone fitted the factory remote start and Security system once it’s landed in Australia? I put an enquirey to Nissan Japan in via a third party, and they suggested it needs a Nissan Japan dealers device to setup and couldn’t guarantee if one here could do it or not. They can supply and I can physically fit it but to setup I would need a dealers device. Any information here would be appreciated also. I’ve seen one here with it fitted already prior to leaving Japan at a dealer/inporter, so clearly passes compliance and works when fitted Japan and doesn’t need changing here.      also, does the tyre inflation sensors work here? Does anything change with them when the vehicle arrives? Where are they actually situated? I’ve read they have batteries and they need to changing at times and seems like resetting involves the nav system?    any help here would be appreciated and any other aust specific information to help would be great. Looking forward to see what the current generation skyline is like and eager to see how many of the gadgets can be utilised here.  Thanks in advance 
    • Do need to take it with a pinch of salt. One of the adapter failures, they clearly had setup issues with the flywheel.  One of the slipping ones I spoke to and it was pretty clear the throwout was riding, rather than fix, just swapped to a new clutch.    These clutches are being put in anything from 5k offroad 4x4 beaters, GR yaris, 500hp commodores to 1200hp barra monsters. Bound to be some issues in some of them when they are not a simple bolt in affair due to the changes in height.    There is a lot going on in this picture and unless I did the job myself no way to tell what really happened. 
    • I did this mod in 2019  You just have to modify the top bracket of the ABS/TC/Fuel Pump Control ECU so it sits more upright and closer to the back seat and run a good quality positive battery lead from the engine bay, the negative lead i just bolted down to the body in the boot.
    • Damn... Not the feedback I want to hear.
