I broke a piece of this part but just interested to know what it is and what it does

I think it may be from the heater hose not sure.

hard to see in your photo,but it is a heater control valve of some sort . when you move the heater control inside it should open up to let hot water into the heater core to warm you up ? or stop the flow to cool you down.

thats an old style heater valve - havent seen r33's running one of these before though.

think some info regarding your car and motor would make it easier

Its an R33 Gtst 94. Sure does open and shut.So is there something different to replace it with or should i stick with the same one.

what opens and closes it? what is on the other end of that cable?

r33s run a climate control unit that uses the doors in the heater box to control temps - find it strange that you would block the heater line like a early 80's car does

Even climate control cars use a heater tap to control flow to the heater core. The climate control cars usually just have it mounted directly to the heater core itself.

Looks like a cable operated heater tap which would be controlled via a slide control inside the car.
