boy oh boy... what to post... do i help... or do i flame??

first.. a question... why are you just taking the car around the block?? from experience... its because you dont have a licence at the moment and you are getting antzy..

to really feel the boost... its better in 2nd gear.. the gear ratios are better and your max speed will still only be around 120km/h.. which if your doing the above question.. wont really matter unless a kid steps out in front of you.. the sheer velocity of doing it in 1st is hard on the driveline.. and your top speed is only going to be 60-80, not really worth it if your going to be an idiot in a surburbian street.

and the answer is dont knock it back into neutral... at 8000rpm, its dumping in enough fuel and timing to support the load and pumping enough oil and water around to handle the conditions... then when you knock it back to neutral, that all dies off... the engine and turbos get incredibly hot due to the lean running conditions when its all shut off like that, all that heat has nowhere to transfer to as the water pump has returned back to idle speed and the head now has copius amounts of oil floating around and none in the sump. the turbos are still spinning at 70000rpm and the oil flow goes from lots... to not lots.. so the not lots of oil in going through the extremely hot and still spinning turbos is going to overheat and lose its lubrication and cooling properties, at worst possibly carbon up and clog or restrict the galleries in the turbos

another thing to take into consideration with the gear ratios of 1st gear is the engine braking... if you punch it in first then let the revs die down, its so abrupt that it throws you forward in the seat, it can nearly lock the back wheels just by stepping off the accelerator.. its not good for the clutch, gearbox, driveshaft, diffs... etc..

so your best bet... if you really must do it... is get it rolling in 1st, punch it in 2nd, clutch in and then change to 3rd or 4th to let it wind down by itself so that everything is in check.

im waiting for his next thread my engine just died what do you think happened lol

+1 for oh dear

aslong as he doesnt wrap it around a tree... there are always buyers for a gtr with a blown engine... i hope i see it on ebay for $5000.

Whats with the hate, his just asking a question, would you rather rev 2nd gear into 8000rpm instead of 1st? that would be more stupid if your driving around the block or anywhere besides the highway. Everyone redlines their cars every know and then, i do it often in my rx7 as their rev happy and it cleans out the rotary. I usually redline first gear to 8700rpm then shift into 4th going 60kmph, although sometimes i hit 70kmph in first. Also the shock would go into your engine mounts when you suddenly drop the gas causing the engine to move. You can absorb this shock with one of the engine torque something... if forgot the dam word for it lol but it basically absorbs the shock for the engine moving during acceleration and getting off gas.

please enlighten us what makes u guys good drivers do u guys never give it the occasional squirt ? this is a serious question ! as i do not want to wrap it around a tree..... only had the car 11 days...

Basically what people are saying is if you keep redlining it in 1st you're going to break something. If I'm going to redline any gear it's usually 2nd, I'll be going to fast to redline it in 3rd (for the street) and boosting 2nd is my favourite anyway. :) Are you licensed to drive the car?

How much thrashing can an RB take? I mean I see some people wringing their necks everyday.

Mine sees 5-6 grand daily. I mean I normally give it a couple of squirts to and from work basically, not bouncing it off the limiter all the way of course! . 99% of the time it is just crusing at 2-3 grand of course.

rb20's can take a pizzling... limiter bounce well after the rings are shot and the detonation is going mental!

what makes you a good driver is learning the car.. knowing your car and how it reacts under given situations.. being able to feel what the tyres are doing on the road surface..

everyone on here will give their car a bit of a punch every now and then.. noone can or will deny that..

but there is a time and a place.. and if youve just got the car, that place is a skidpan and that time is with a professional instructor.

you need to push the car beyond its limits in a controlled environment so you know where they are and how it will react.

the reason new GTR drivers pound into trees is because over 20 years, the attessa system tends to get a little slow.. they are already slow reacting in the r32 when new..

so they punch it around a corner, and it steps out, so they counter steer it, and then the front wheels kick in and spit them off the side of the road into the nearest immovable object.

GTR drivelines can cop a pounding, 9k launches all day if its tight.. but the engines cant.. they are at the age where they are ready to go POP!

This forum is getting just as bad as the others. Why comment if your just going to bag him?!? Its pointless and to be honest most of you musnt have anything better to do with your time.. Either answer the question or dont bother saying anything at all.

I'd say shift to second and let it wind down. Harsh treatment for it clutching it at such high revs.

so long as you dont crash into me(probably not gona as im long way away) its his money, im trying not to insult people but in my opinion only people who are smart enough to understand cars should be allowed to drive them, there would only be about 5000 car drivers in the world if i had my way lol i realy do blame henry ford for allowing regular dumb joes to drive a weapon

    • 49719 is the cooler loop. Right at the front, LHS of that diagram. Return line from rack (LP side) goes to cooler loop on RHS front of car, then back under engine and returns to bottom of tank. 49717M is feed from tank to pump. HP line out of pump is thick rubber, followed by the hard line that runs down to crossmember and runs in parallel (but opposite flow direction) to the LP return line. Nothing goes anywhere near the firewall or interior of car. The closest they get to that is the connections on the rack.
    • Thanks, plan is to drain all fluid tomorrow and do smoke test to find out the leak.   Appreciate your help and want to understand how the system work. So cooling is achieved by the long loop not any rad? The diagram seems to suggest it connects to somewhere inside the cabin and I thought that is a cooler inside firewall. If you look at the diagram it seems to show it connects to something inside firewall. I tried chasing it but not easy unless I take loads off   i am confident pump is good as fluid goes in and it gets soft( steering) but as soon as I turn engine off , loads of bubble come to surface and overflow. When engine is on , fluid level is below minimum but when off it shoots off and thinking it is sucking air in. I suspect aluminium pipe may have a crack line or whole   smoke test with no fluid should be a good start and if needed will remove the pump   In addition, the one going under the engine bay is high pressure line and one directly connecting from pump to resorvoir is return/ low pressure?   finally I searched and suggestion is to use dexron 2 but that is discontinued so bought dexron 3 as all research suggest it is compatible and shouldn’t cause any issues/ blow seals. I bought two liter of dexron 3 motul atf
    • Don't worry about. Just don't try to drive hard enough to make boost and you'll be fine.
    • Yes. This has already been said. It is a loop of hardline in front of the radiator. Because.... the pump is on the LHS and the steering rack hydraulic connections are where they always are on a RHD steering rack....on the RHS. The high pressure line goes down under the engine, along the crossmember, like it does on all Skylines. Don't just throw expensive braided hoses/other kits at it. Work out what is wrong and fix that.
    • Still got the afm on the intake, clamps are shut tight, only loose hose is the one that goes from the j pipe towards the IACV, since it's next to impossible to find a factory hose and the barbs are different sizes (I'm still using clamps on this hose to try and help it seal on the iacv side) I've ordered parts to make up the hotside of the intercooler pipes, I'll plumb it in and see what happens in a few days I suppose The turbo's internally gated, can I just unscrew the tension rod to let the gate open?
