Hi guys i been searching for a while now and couldnt get a straight answer.

Im currently building an rb30det with a rb25det vvt head with PROcams, I will be using tomei cam gears with the VVT removed. Do i still need an external oil supply to the front of the head for the cam journal or is it only used for vvt purposes?

Any help would be appreciated.

Front feed in the head is for VVT. If retaining VVT there are mods you can make in the gallery, otherwise run an external feed as per the RB30DET guide.

If deleting VVT there is more than adequate oil supply to the front cam journals. You can also remove the solenoid and install a bung to simplify things.

Be sure to check the lift specs in Pro Cams - beyond 9mm in a RB25 head will probably require machining to give adequate clearance and avoid coil bind on the valve springs. If unsure you should consult with a head specialist and get things measured on the bench.

So really all id have to do is plug up the vvt solenoid hole and weld up the hole in the bottom of the head that used to supply the vvt, and probably put an oil drain in the back of the head down to the sump.

Unless for extreme use, external drain is over-rated and misunderstood IMO.

Better value and results if the time and effort is spent drilling out the internal drainbacks in the head and block.

Otherwise, yep, use a bung where the solenoid used to reside (make sure it is the correct type to seal), and have the feed hole welded or grub screwed as per the guide.

fair enough. atleast its clear now. I have the head next to me now all apart and i can see that the vvt cam journal has 2 holes in it. One of them must me a constant oil supply from somewhere and the other is a supply from the vvt solenoid yea? The heads going on an rb34 stroker bottom end and there isnt must money spared on this setup so i wanna do it right without any troubles.

    • Welcome.  Glad to hear that you have gained some knowledge that has helped you. I believe the only fix for the power steer belt is an electric conversion with a Holden astra pump. If you get a chance, post pics of your car, please. 🙂

    • Harness update time have had great fun and learnt so much already so far with this project. I started off making both the ignition and injector sub harnesses in the hope any mistakes i made here aren't as hard to undo and learn from as the main harness.  A cool comparison of the old harness using presumably TXL wire and the new which is using Tezel. Also opted to use DTM plugs to keep the whole setup as neat and tidy as possible and tucked the wiring under the coil bracket to try and keep it all from sticking out too much. Although the injector harness, I'm not overly happy with as I'm still using the rubber boots that are supplied with the type of plugs it just looks ugly and sticks out like a sore thumb with the white identifiers so a slight redesign may be done.   Then it was main harness time and most importantly trying to route it nice and away from the heat it will use the OEM heater hose routing which is no longer present to keep the harness up high and secure. it's amazing how much smaller this harness is able to be compared to the old one. plugged everything into the emtron and with the help of the tuner again attempted to start it up and instantly fired up and running smoothly on all 6 which was a big shock to myself. So still some routing and adjusting to be done for the final fit up and installing a knock sensor harness plug which is in the post all has gone surprisingly well.     The old harness for shits and giggles.
