I had a fantastic day as always! I accomplished my target for today... to destroy at least one of my evil, evil skid rims' tyres. A de-laminated tyre later and I felt my day was complete! :)

Big thanks go out to the volunteers, the Comaros / Trans-AM and those people who didn't just come from down the road

I hope more photos of my car made it through processing ;)

'Bout time you finally shredded those tyres, Cass - good work!!!

Does that rule me out from the "thanks" because I drove around 15 minutes to get there???

I also hope more of the photos of my car make it through processing so I can rub it in to all the other Sydney-based Stagea owners how much fun I had, and how they missed out! :) Duncan is let off because he kindly gave up his spot with the higher than expected numbers so others could get a go, and he would have killed me anyway. Still, it would have been great to see photos and vids of two Stageas battling it out!

Wow, an epic day! was so great to take my new 32 for a spin.

Rain saved my tyres a bit, will know for next time to bring skid tyres :)

Thanks to you guys for organising, will definitely be looking out for the next one :-)

** just on a side note, i would have preferred to have kept the first battle course running a little longer. I was only just getting familiar with it when it changed. (and it meant i kinda lost the decider third battle with my BF :))

As the resident Yankee I have to say that it truely made my day to see that Yenko Camaro. The last time I saw one in person was 20 years ago in Seattle. No wonder since they only made a few hundred of them.

For those that don't know about them:

1969

For 1969, the dealership worked with Chevrolet to have the L-72 engines installed on the factory assembly line using a Central Office Production Order, or COPO. The orders included power disc brakes, a 4.10 Positraction rear end, a stronger front stabilizer, and a heavy-duty 4-core aluminum radiator. Buyers of the car had the option of either the M-21 four speed or the Turbo Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission. A total of 201 cars were sold in 1969, 171 with four speed transmissions and 30 with automatic transmissions. Yenko rounded out the visual package with front and rear spoilers, a cowl-induction hood, special "Yenko 427" badges, twin stripes down the flanks and hood, and the sYc (Yenko Super Car) badge. According to the Camaro Research Group, standard black interior (code 711) was the only interior ordered by Yenko. However, many Yenko tribute cars have a white interior.

Almost 40 years later, these Camaros have been appraised and sold for well over $2.2 million USD at Barrett-Jackson auctions. As of sep 2008, there are 2 known automatic transmission 1969 Yenko Camaro's. as stated by ESPN auction show.

As of Jan 17th 2009, a REAL ZL-1 Copo, dark green, re-bodied, went for $290,000 at the Barret Jackson Auto Auction Lot 12773. Mr. October Reggie Jackson was bidding on this car but didn't win it. Another yellow, original body, non original heads with Auto transmission for $270,000. Both are said to be a steal and the deals of the show.

1969 Continuation Series

Recently a company out of North Carolina called Classic Automotive Restoration Specialists[2] has restarted production of the '69 Yenko Camaro. Don Yenko sold 201 of his infamous COPO-program Camaros out of his Canonsburg,PA dealership. As reported in the March '08 issue of Muscle Car Review the vehicle is a fully licensed and certified Yenko starting at #202. The 427 engine under the hood was built by GM who has brought back the big block engines from the muscle car era. The rest of the components took 2 1/2 years to track down the original machinery. Options offered on the vehicle are the same as was available back in 1969 including paint colors. The car costs around 60% less than some of the current 39-year old Yenko Camaro survivors but drives like an old car would have when it was new off the Canonsburg, PA dealership.

Should have one or two, ive got a stack of other photos to go through but those in the link were the ones that looked ok with no editing etc on first look.

I will be having another look tonight and doing some edits + posting more when they are ready.

They are downloadable too, if you click the photo on flickr and then click "all sizes" you can download a large version of it.

Thanks all for a great day.

    • to fix the voltage drop issue I swapped out the old 150amp alternator which turns out is a brand known for having issues and replaced it with the black 180amp alternator beside it
    • For anyone interested, the Way Back Machine has that Japanese website archived with pictures, etc: https://web.archive.org/web/20051023225805fw_/http://www.a31cefiro.com/air_con.htm "Simply swapping the wiring of the harness will not allow it to function properly. For the outdoor air sensor and sunlight sensor, disconnect the wiring connected to CN1-11 of the air conditioning harness from the harness and connect the sensor side wiring to earth. For the indoor air sensor, disconnect the wiring connected to CN2-3 of the air conditioning harness from the harness and connect the sensor side wiring to earth. The connector PIN numbers listed here are the genuine A31 PIN numbers. To avoid incorrect wiring, check with a tester before wiring. Also, disconnect the wiring in a location close to the sensor. The disconnected harness side wiring will not be used, so be sure to insulate it." Wish someone sold a conversion harness to just plug-and-play a Kouki 180sx digital climate control into C33/A31. I'm decent with wiring but feeling kinda lazy about taking this on. Edit: Did some more digging and found a helpful Minkara blog post about the conversion as well: https://minkara.carview.co.jp/userid/1831116/car/1360568/2284209/note.aspx "After installation is complete or the battery is replaced, you need to go into self-diagnosis mode and set the internal air recirculation. The way to do it is to "hold OFF with the key on for more than 5 seconds, set the number to 5, then press 卍→C." ↑↑↑It probably won't make sense unless you actually try it (・∀・)." Lol wtf

    • Well, yeah, the RB26 is definitely that far off the mark. From a pure technology point of view it is closer to the engines of the 60s than it is to the engines of the last 10 years. There is absolutely nothing special about an RB26 that wasn't present in engines going all the way back to the 60s, except probably the four valve head. The bottom end is just bog standard Japanese stuff. The head is nothing special. Celicas in the 70s were the same thing, in 4cyl 2 valve form. The ITBs are nothing special when you consider that the same Celicas had twin Solexes on them, and so had throttle plates in the exact same place. There's no variable valve timing, no variable inlet manifold, which even other RBs had either before the 26 came out or shortly afterward. The ECU is pretty rude and crude. The only things it has going for it are that the physical structure was pretty bloody tough for a mass produced engine, the twin-turbos and ITBs made for a bit of uniqueness against the competition (and even Toyota were ahead on the twin turbs thing, weren't they?) and the electronic controls and measuring devices (ie, AFMs, CAS, etc) were good enough to make it run well. Oh, and it sounds better than almost anything else, ever. The VR38 is absolutely halfway between the RB generation and the current generation, so it definitely has a massive increase in the sophistication of the electronics, allowing for a lot more dynamic optimisation of mapping. Then there's things like metal treatments and other coatings on things, adoption of variable cam stuff, and a bunch of other little improvements that mean it has to be a better thing than the RB26. But I otherwise agree with you that it is approximately the same thing as a 26. But, skip forward another 10 years from that engine and then the things that I mentioned in previous post come out to play. High compression, massively sophisticated computers, direct injection, clever measuring sensors, etc etc. They are the real difference between trying to make big power with a 26 and trying to make big power with a S/B50/54 (or whatever the preferred BMW engine of the week is).
