Hello guys I just recently got a sweet deal on a Garrett Gt42 turbo and I wanted to get you guys opinions on it and the setup I am trying to do. I was going for a holset hx35 or 40 but I got this one for about 100 less. So it seem like a very good deal. The specs on the turo are as listed.

100% Authentic Garrett GT42 turbocharger

- Compressor A/R = .71 Turbine A/R = 1.28

- Compressor wheel Inducer dia = 64 mm

- Compressor Inlet = 4 inch / Outlet = 2.75 inch

- Turbine Inlet is a T6 flange / Outlet = 3.25 inch I.D. V-band

So this turbo is going on a Z32 with

555cc sidefeed injectors

FMIC

Greddy Profec B Spec 2 EBC

3 inch exhaust split into dual exhaust with 5 inch tips

z32 Maf

Rear sump custom race oil pan

As for the dowpipe I have found a few setups off a the Supra that look like they could work. If you look at the measurements posted on the first link that DP looks like it will work. I will probably go with the second one so I can use my own midpipes. I have no wedding skills and in my area no one does this type of fabicating so I figure I would grab something and make it work. This should be very close from what I have seen with Z32s running 2j engines.

Also on the ecu tuning. I have a stagea C34 engine. So I want to use nistune. I cannot get a straigt answer to see if I am suppose to use the R33 flash or the R34 which I believe is for a Neo engine. But my ecu is the same style as a Neo R34 engine.

It'd be very helpful to know what you are hoping to get from it? I am guessing from the lack of high spec engine mods being listed and only 555cc injectors, you aren't aiming for way more than 300kw @ wheels.

I am at work and can't follow that link, but I can say that a 64mm inducer is not normal for a Garrett GT42 - so I can't help but be dubious of how genuine it is, and on top of that any GT42 based turbo is WAY overkill for a 300-350kw setup, it will be laggy as. Even a 64mm turbo is overkill for that...

if you engine is a NEO RB25 then use the R34 Nistune board. If its not a NEO then its the same engine as the R33 RB25, even though the non-neo stagea uses the R34 ecu plug type, its still the same insides as a R33 ecu.

Exactly, 555cc injectors and a GT42 do not match. A GT42 on a stock RB25 would be sooo laggy its not funny. A GT30 can make 300rwkw and a GT35R can make 350-380rwkw so either one of those would be a LOT better. Plus get some bigger injectors if you are looking for power figures like this.

You just purchased a turbo from a rotary.

1.28 rear housing is FAR to big even for a 3ltr.

Also add to the fact you have a 850-900hp turbo, but injectors that will only support around 550hp

Sounds like you're just guessing with parts and setup to be honest and need to do some proper research.

Sell the turbo and get something more suited. That turbo is WAY to large for a RB25 no matter what any one says. Not to mention your current setup isn't suited for it what so ever. Surely this has to be a joke.

Bin it

Or if you are certain you wanna keep it, make sure you tap a thread in the rear housing and run a straw into the cabin. The engine will need all the help it can get to spin that turbo, so blow like crazy.

its a big turbo.. from that inducer size id say its straight of a 400ish hp diesel. 64mm inlet. but it will be able to make 40+ pounds of boost no worries :P

you could get a smaller ex housing, but its still set up for a BIG motor. ps. probably not ball bearing either.

it will have a massive turbine wheel aswell. just not suited for any sort of performance petrol application.

at a guess. it will hit full boost slowly at aroung 5500-6k.

Thanks for the responses guys. I have never gotten so much attention at one time. Lol. Also it is going on a RB25det I got the idea from a guy on Youtube. I been running a VGtt so Im not too familiar with Rbs and what they use and do not use. VGs have those tiny turbos and when I saw this turbo going dirt cheap I just jumped on it and take a chance. I was trying to get a Holset Hx35 but everyone is after those now.

Here is that video so all of you can get a good laugh.

So on the ECU do I get the board for the Neo or R33. I was thinking that since I have the NEO style ecu I would have too get the board for it but use the R33 flash.

On the exhaust should I go single or should I get a smaller pipe leading to the mufflers.

The turbo is back up for sale I am trying to get a T70 or gt35.

Man that turbo looks about as big as mine. Lol. What model is that. Also other than holset what other inexpensive turbo do you suggest.

Now if I read up right. I can buy the nistune board for the R33 and chip my C34 ecu.

Well your call but I reckon a GT4088R would have been better on all counts for any RB25DET while still being too big , more compact and a more efficient unit to start with .

I just don't see 800 odd horsepower bellowing out of an RB25 or if it did there wouldn't be much in the way of RB25 parts left on it .

Really its the head and manifolding that are the hallmarks of an RB25 , 33/34 spec anyway . To justify big turbos I think you need more than 2.5 liters and to survive high revs a non hydraulic valve train makes sense to me . The 26 head is what the six throttle manifold lives on and they don't easily go on any other RB head . I think a 26/30 would be a minimum for these big turbos .

Was it just me or did that "Z25" go a long way up the rev range before the turbo spun up ?

Cheers A .

    • Hi soviet_merlin, We appreciate your concern regarding this possibly being some sort of PR/Political hype, I assure you that is not the case, I wish we could claim something like that, but in this case, we merely reached out for comment on the basis of the outrage we too felt, as those heavily in the automotive industry. Ps. the original source in the social media post is CarExpert not CarExplore.    Best, CE.
    • Made a bit of a discovery, but while I was cruising, I randomly decided to test to see if it worked and it showed up on my IC7. The entire time I tested it before, I never thought to turn the ignition on. I only tested it with head lights turned on but with the ignition off. Huge oversight on my end. I’m a dummy. I know.
    • G'day all, I have drilled and tapped the hole for the relocation of the timing belt tensioner. That was straight forward. I'm unsure if I need to also put another hole for the smaller stud that the spring behind the tensioner catches on (this is how it seems to work in its original spot). Or do you not use the spring behind it and just torque it down? Thanks in advance, I did a search but couldn't find anything related and it doesn't mention it in the rb30det sau guide.
    • Hi All,  just thought I would provide an update as I know smooth (Matt) was on this forum from 2003.    my brother Matthew passed away end of may 2024 at the age of 41 from liver failure. I am not sure how many of his original team krazy friends are still on here or active but thought it reasonable to let the forum know.    if you have any photos or pictures it would be great if you could share them.    it took me a while to work out he was active on here.    thanks so much
