You can also look into putting steel wheels into your turbos, if its a tight budget and only looking at slight performance. I'm running 17psi on my ones and 287rwkw with supporting mods and it cost me $1100 with all the labour done myself, I bought the turbo cores of a member here with the wheels already balanced and ready to go and just added my exhaust housing and compressor housing of the old turbos. Not that hard if you have basic mechanical knowledge, I had no issues doing all this myself and saved alot on labour.

But if budget allows, do what R31Nismoid recommended earlier Garrett -7, much better than my option and can make much more power as well as less work involved.

Cheers

Aren't the -9's the way to go now instead of -7's? (or are they more expensive?)

Well Nismoids above post has thrown me as for the past few months I have noticed he is a pro -9 man :P

i can vouch for garretts being the best choice for a street replacement on a budget.

i would say go the -7's or -9's

i've got -5's which are a little bit of overkill, i only got them because they were the ones that came available the soonest when my stockers blew the rear wheel off.

the -7's or -9's would be better for response and still have plenty of power!

i hope your mates car will be fine after he gets the turbo's replaced and doesnt have my luck and have the motor blow a week and a half after the new turbos are installed.

His post says slight improvement over factory, -7's are the closest.

-9's are 330rwkw, which IMO i wouldn't be taking a R32 motor to that level given their age/conditoon now.

So 280rwkw or so on -7's would be reasonable and about 30-40rwkw more than factory turbo's.

If he wanted a bit more performance, with a planned rebuild, then -9's for sure.

Say you were running 300kw, would the -9s produce that with a slightly lower temperature (due to the better compressor efficiency) than the -7s? Or are they only better when you're running them right at the peak?

Not 100% sure but it's not going to be a 30 degree difference or anything major i would imagine.

Probably a difference, however majorly signifigant? Probably not.

300rwkw i would still pick -9's though. 280rwkw would be the aim for -7's.

just a slightly off topic question....why are the power out puts between a -7 and a -9 so different, looking at the spec sheets they are so close to the same it isnt funny (-9 slightly smaller in the compressor and slightly larger in the turbine but we are talking 0.0Xmm difference)

Rebuild it with steel internals or go for R34 GTR N1 turbo's.

Or any aftermarket that is listed in thread.

what is the benefit of N1 turbos , everybody says there great , what would a pair set me back!

They came from factory on the R34 GTR V-Spec II N1, R34 GTR V-Spec II Nur and R34 GTR M-Spec Nur.

R34 GTR N1 turbos came from factory with steel internals and they ran 1.2 bar boost stock.

So they are very strong and responsive.

I had driven a R34 GTR V-Spec II Nur with 306 rw kW's still retaining the N1 turbos.

Was excellent.

Try the for sale section and from memory about $1450 + a pair.

Should be straight bolt on fit too.

After reading a few topics and the GCG website the gt2860r-7 are equalent or closest to n1 turbos that came in the cars that you mentioned.

My understanding is that the gt2860r-9 are equalent or closest to HKS GTSS.

The physical dimensions of the wheels are one of MANY variables. The -9's have newer more modern wheels which flow more and more efficiently without needing to be bigger or lighter.

To the previous posts about the -7 turbos, I'll say it again, -9's AREN'T any laggier than -7's so there is NO advantage of -7's! If u only want to make a certain amount of power, just run -9's on low boost!

Damn that is bad luck

Im guessing the ceramic turbos did the damage initially.

I was thinking the way to go is gt2860r-7

Are bigger turbs generally more laggy.

Everyones advice has been extremely helpful .

why not -9's? Newer more modern turbo. Same response, more efficient, more power, same price. I dunno why they don't discontinue -7's and put an end to all this confusion.

Yeah, I think your right, by looking at my Turbo Chart, the specs seem the same.

And yes the -9's = HKS GT-SS (well, very close)
