Hey i was wondering whether a 1998 r34 skyline will take the new e10 petrol or will it destroy the motor?

Personally, wouldn't even think of putting E10 in a skyline  I've always used 98 from BP, Then again depends if its turbo or non-turbo ? The non-turbo could probably take 95 ? You'll have to get someone to confirm this.

it isn't the ethanol that would possibly do any damage, but the lower octane.

as for the octane rating making a difference to performance, that isn't 100% correct. if you get a car tuned for 91 octane and run it on 98 there will be pretty much no difference. however if you take a car that is tuned for 98 octane and run it on 91 then it will run like snot due to the ecu retarding the timing to stop detonation.

actually on fifth gear the other night they did some back to back dyno tests using 3 different fuels at different octane ratings. one was a base 91 octane i think and the other two were premium fuels (shell and BP) and the difference in power on some heap of crap like a golf or something like that was none. on something mildly sporty, there was about a 2hp difference, but on a wrx (that is designed to run on premium from factory) there was something like a 10 or 15hp gain from the 91 octane to the premium.

on a non turbo skyline you could probably get away with using the e10 fuel without any dramas. if you wanted to play it safe you could just back the timing off via the CAS by a degree or 2, but personally i wouldn't bother.

Not all E10s are the same RON if you want to run it every 2nd tank...

Depending on brand ^^^ in this thread, the RON can be as high as 95 (with United), and as low as 91-92 (with BP).

^^^ Yep even in my Forester XT, it's always 98.

terry walks in the back door these days, yells out to mum (with dementia), "i scored 98% again to-day mum"

mum replies, "good lad - better than that 95 you got last year - or was it the year before"?

E10 would kill your ride...

no point saving on a few bucks each pump and change a engine in the end.

seen the news ytd... ppl have their engine damaged using E10.

Try using unleaded(i believe it's 92). if ur engine knocks... that means u need a higher octane level fuel.

i always use v-power.

as someone who has been using e10 on all the cars i've owned for over 2 years now (one car has been continuous for 2 years, and used it in other cars i have owned in that time), i can tell you that your statement about it killing cars is crap. i'm just guessing that the damage (if it was in fact caused by the fuel at all) was probably done due to not maintaining things like fuel filters and then the engine ran lean due to the filter being blocked

Hi Team,

I have just encountered my first issue. After a couple of drinks the other night i went into the petrol station and was not concentrating as i was quite relaxed (not pissed) anywho like a dkhead i pulled into 7-11 and put in the cheap unleaded! The car ran fine on the way home. The next day i was driving to work and found that it felt very laggy and would take about 4-6 sec to get to the 6000 line? The more i pushed the more the engine felt congested!

I got home from work and when i was pulling in the drive it staLLED.

i HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO START SINCE it seems as though it has battrey but it just wont spark and turn over, any suggestions?

Thanks

So the car started running badly and you kept on pushing it?

You could try to get the old fuel out and put in some 98ron from the closest servo. Another option is octane booster although have heard bad things about it and wouldn't use it personally

One thing to look at could be the condition of your battery as a start.

Cars getting flooded "shouldn't" be an issue with EFI. But - some late 90s Subarus do suffer from hard starting if you have ran the engine too quickly, eg. start the engine to move the car a few meters then turn off the engine again.
