I'm looking to design up a small roadster type thing, similar to the small kit cars you see getting around but I'm going in a bit different direction than most in that I want to use R32 GTR running gear with shortened axles and drive shafts etc. My problem is that the RB26 is just too tall for what I want to do, and to be honest it's too heavy as well.

The main problem I have is size, I want something that is short in height and length so the car doesn't end up huge.

Ideally a small ally NA V6 would be great, but I have no idea what's out there. I was even thinking a rotor because they are so small but I think I would prefer something with a little more torque. I'm not too fussed if it's NA or turbo but NA would be easier. I'm thinking around the 230kw mark, which should make for a quick car.

What can you people think of that fits the bill?

they make a clubman, lotus 7, prb thingo called the wasp which runs an sr20det in them

they are one of the quickest things around because they weigh nothing but as the sr is too tall they have to be dry sumped.

my mate had a variant with a rolla 20v and just low enough.

we queried going 13b but its too hard to make them fit the emmission specs for what is essentially a 'new' car.

his prb with the race spec 20v was bored and stroked to 2.2L with ITBs and race fixed cams, made about 240hp at the fly

throw it in a 400kg car w/o driver and you end up with a sub 1.16.xx mallala laptime

he has since built another with the 16v as his weekend car - more than enough balls to drag off a 911 and still handles better than a lotus

Renesis 13B - not a torque monster, but certainly not bad. With decent exhaust and ECU, you will have it easily over 200kW. As it's a current model engine, emissions shouldn't be too much hassle. 9000RPM from the factory should be enough, too.

Alternatively a 13BT will have all the torque you need, with 500hp readily accessible.

If you are looking for 230kW from a small, compact engine, then I suspect that you will have trouble with emissions / driveability / lag at any rate, so from that point of view, a modern rotary won't be too bad.

If it's all out NA grunt you want, then an L98 is the go. Lighter than the RB, with an easy and reliable 500hp available with little outlay. You should be able to pick up a brand new crate motor for around $6k or so. Problem is they're fairly bulky and tall, so might not fit your purpose, and the T56 is heavy, and a bit of a p-i-g (it changed it to cop :P ) to use.

how big are the motors out of toyota aurions? They use those in the lotus evora and if the engine itself isn't too large/heavy i could see it being all kinds of awesome.

Also aren't LS motors shorter and lighter than RB's? Although unsure on how tall these are either

If I were you I'd be looking at RNN14 GTi-R or HNU13 Bluebird running gear and SR20DET's, they're the most potent version of the engine and they're AWD (albeit not ATTESA-ETS like the GTR, but close). Was good enough to conquer rallies back in the day.

Not a fan of the east west in a GTi-R plus with the GTR running gear I can swap to rear wheel drive if I feel like it.

A 13b rotor is looking like a likely contender at the moment. If I run e85 emissions shouldn't be to hard

Got the ticket right here...take 2 suzuki hayabusa engines and turn it into this 2.6 litre to 3.0 V8 that turns to 10,000rpm. :)

...Or if your soft just the H2 engine.

    • Trying to find the plastic under cover for an 04' Forester X. The main under cover that covers most of the front of the vehicle under the engine. This has turned out to be a crazy experience. Normally I can find parts for vehicles, if I have the correct info, no problem. But not this! The Forester is a non-turbo btw. In a Forester parts catalog, for model years 03'-06', it shows part# 56410SA070 as being the correct part. So I go to the local Subaru dealership's website to order it. I type in the part#, hit search and there it is, the under cover. "DOES THIS PART FIT YOUR VEHICLE?" I type in my VIN# and sure enough, "This Part Does Not Fit Your Vehicle. See Similar Parts For Your Vehicle." I click on that and part# 56410SA000 comes up. Looks absolutely nothing like the previous part. Not even close. So I go to a different Subaru dealer website and put in that 2nd part# (56410SA000) and "This Part Has Been Replaced By" 56410SA070, which is the first part I looked up. I thought OK, makes sense. They replaced the strange looking part, with the one I looked up first, so I add it to the cart. "Does This Part Fit Your Vehicle?" I type in my VIN#, and sure enough, "This Part Does Not Fit Your Vehicle." I've basically been doing this with various parts suppliers and dealerships, for the past 4 hours! Does anyone know what the hell is going on?? Thanks in advance!   
    • have you rotated the car yet? if so how smooth was it?
    • And finally, I had the driver's side airbox off while adding a long drain hose under the oil can to down near the oil filter. Doesn't look good, it has definitely had an turbo oil seal leak and looks like it has been for a long time.....guess I'll have to get a pair of highflows to put on the shelf It's also worth mentioning it has a really strange clamp between the bottom of the airflow meter (which has a big barb/lip on it) and the intake pipe. I've used the magic of MSPaint to show, basically you have to clip out those 2 steel springs which unlocks the hose from the AFM. I used 2 flat screwdrivers, the spring sort of clips into the unlocked position. Reassembly you just pop them both back flat once the hose is far enough up the AFM that the spring clamp is above the barb. Weird to use but much more convenient once your'e used to it compared to trying to do up a hose clamp under the airbox like on 32 GTR
    • The other thing I started was a fire extinguisher bracket.  As with a few other cars previously (350z, Leaf), I'm going to add a bracket between the navigator seat's front bolts, then mount the extinguisher on that. Unfortunately Nissan (probably the same engineer who did the A/T fluid interwarmer) decided that the front seat brackets would be recessed and uneven so the bracket shape was a bit tricky; I ended up doing 1 part under each seat mount (the large hole is because there is a flange under the seat mount to allow for the carpet thickness)   and then a horizontal part between those 2 No final pic yet as the paint needs to dry, I'll post up once that's done
