Hey all,

Got a new set of wheels coming this week hopefully, XD9's in 17x9.5 with +17 offset for my 32 gtst. So what im looking for is new tires all round, preferably the best value tyres for your money. The car is used as a drift street/track car and not a daily. They will need to be stretched, so they can fit in the guards, cos my car will be slammed with the coilovers.

So basically, I am looking for dimensions of tires and the specific tyres that would be most approriate for this setup and style. I may go something cheaper on the rear because chances are they will be worn pretty quickly. Any suggestions?

Federal tyres 595rs series street legal semi slicks, maybe 17x 40x265, around 400$ each, but worth every penny ....

265 are way to wide...

im thinking more 215 or somez??? what about the SS595 in 215/40/17? These would be alot more affordable...

215's on a 9.5" rim will be a pretty big stretch eh? what about 235's..I was thinking of my 18" tyres when i said 400 each so 17,s would b a bit cheaper for sure..im also unsure of width for 32,s as i have a 33 :)

I'd look at something like Kuhmo KU36 or Hankook RS-2's, Or federal RSR's on the front and maybe some super steel 595's on the rear if you planning on constant abuse.

thats what i was trying to say, need at least 235 or 245's to fit on a 9.5" rim

At the moment im thinking Federal 595rs on the front and Federal 595ss(super steel) on the rear.

As far as sizes/dimension... i just looked up pics of a 225/45/17 on a 9.5" wheel and that is huge stretch. but 235/35/17 doesnt look stretched much at all. so dunno...

i would say the best VALUE would be kuhmo ku36 in a 235/40/17

its the most common size around that area and is thus the cheapest.

definately a good tyre and a hell of a lot tyre for the money

KU36 is the semi slick right? As far as I know the semi's dont stretch as well as a normal road tyre so just keep that in mind.

Also, your comment about the 225 looking heaps stretched but 235 looking hardly any. I believe all the different tyre manufacturers are slightly different so some brand stretch more/less than others.

I would be going probably 225/45R17, unless your car is super low then I would maybe go down to the 40 profile but 45 is adequet.

Oh yeah and my last two sets of tyres have been Federal SS595 and I have loved them a lot.

im proboably gonna go 225/40/17... now to decide which tires... hmmm

gonna check out kumho ku36's for the front and rear

or ku36 just front, and federeal ss595 for the rear.

should i go cheaper tyres on the rear? the federal ss595 seems like a good option as a rear.

for street duties the KU 36's are a better choice as they will have a lot more grip in the wet than the RSR's

you definately want these for the front.

on the rear... what do you want out of the car? for drift i would reccomend the federal 595ss as they wear well and most importantly, evenly. they are also cheap enough to smash through.

for a street driven application, the ku36's offer more grip, but a lower treadwear :D

where is the cheapest place to get these tires in melbourne, inner east suburbs.. around camberwell area? i was thinking tyre power in hawthorn.

About the Kumho's stretching, I didn't mean that they aren't able to be stretch as much, I just meant that they won't appear as stretched as a normal tyre, from what I have heard anyway.

Option1Garage up in QLD have great deals on all of Kumho's tyres and Federal tyres. Postage to me (newcastle, nsw) was $28 for a pair or $40 for a set and came in 2 days. Excellent service. The prices of the sizes you want aren't on their website but just send them an email and they should get back to you quickly.

as for the kuhmo's go to tyrepower hawthorne and speak to micky or sam... tell him i sent ya (hamish) and he'll sort you the best deal you'll get

You might assume from looking at the tread pattern of each of these tyres (KU36 and 595RS-R) that the Kumho would be the better wet tyre, but from my experience using the 595RS-R as a daily driven street tyre - they are surprisingly good in wet conditions and I have used many different tyres over the years on my R32.

I cant compare though cos I havent used the KU36's

I think getting lower grip rear tyres is a pretty bad idea. the only time you want to do that really is on a drift day/skidpan day for fun, but on the street or circuit it's not good. I would go with the 235 KU36s all round, that way you can rotate them as needed to extend their life and you'll have a well balanced car with plenty of front and rear grip. get a pair of 17s for dirft and put some cheaper tyres on those for when you want to go drifting at the track.

i am looking at going just 225/45/17 or 235/40/17 all round im kumho ku36's...

the KU36 is also alot more durable on the track than the 595SS, and the cost difference is bugger all. The KU36 will work out more cost effective for drift days.

if their in fact isnt a huge difference in cost then ill probs go the ku36's all round.

Ok so got some prices on tires today.... Ku36's are $180 for 235/40/17 and there are on backorder for a month or so.

in the way of federals, the dimensions 225/40/17 - rsr = $300, evo = $170, ss = $140

so the ku36's are probably best value for money easily.... considering they are like a semi slick.. but they dont have any at the moment.

so if i go federal, i think im gonna get some evo's up fornt and some ss on the back. i dont really have the money to spend $300ea on tires atm.
