Hey guys

I need a PC and over the past week or two ive been costing parts for an all round machine that will hope full last a couple of yrs - an i7 920, x58 ud5(not sure), 6gb ram, 5770, 1tbhdd, dvdrw etc about 1200-1500 depending on keyborad, mouse, screen, speakers etc.

Now the question is will the new i9's have a major impact on the i7 prices?

Also i understand the will be 1366 socket so mobo's pricing proabbaly wont decrease.

So basically should i wait for the i9 to come out or just buy now?

Also any idea when the i9 is coming, i read somewhere April/May?

cheers rich

Pricing won change much at all. When Gulftown is released it'll still be high in price.

It's 32nm, and will be in short supply for a while is my guess as people snap them up. So not affecting i7 much at all initially.

Intel might revise pricing, but you are not talking $100. $30-$50 maybe.

Motherboards pricing will stay the same as i9 is 1366 socket as well.

i7 920 the CPU will last you easily 2 years, i can't see any program coming close to hurting it. I wouldn't wait if uoi need a new one now, there isnt going to be massive price savings.

What resolution monitor do you have? Use of PC?

Thanks for the reply,

Atm i have nothing - moniter keyboard tower etc.

Just bought my first house and need an allrounder for the net, ms office, gamer, porn lol etc oh and possible voip as i dont have a home phone and cant get optus fusion in my area - good all round plans those.

i figured i may aswell go an i7 as like you say it will last a couple of years and would be a good base for futuer upgrades.

Not overly fussed on monitors, keyboards and mice so cheapies will do - well a decent 21-24in monitor but there only 2-300bucks.

ive got my pricing mainly from msy/fluidtech etc.

i7 920 $350

gigabyte x58ud 3/5/7 - not sure what i really need $450 for a 7

6gb 1333mhz $215ish - not sure on brands - does it matter

5770 cpu - $200 - again not sure on brand - should play most current/future games ok?

1tb hdd - $100-150

antec 902 $170 - probably overkill?

corsair tx650 $160

dvdrw $80

There the rough prices of the top of my head, not sure if im missing anything. still need to tweak it abit as that 1500 there already not the 7 board without monitor an i would prefer to kepp it under 1500 total

If you are not doing a lot of hardcore gaming, and just your usual computing. It sounds as if you are not going to be overclocking as well

I would suggest going Core i5 to be honest. You sound like more of a entry-mid level PC user rather than enthusiast so the power and brilliance of a i7 in computing speed/power/overclockability/performance will probably be wasted.

Far be it for me to suggest i5 as well, I’m against it only because currently there is no clear upgrade path with that socket (1156).

However if you are just casually gaming, and doing normal day to day tasks then the i5 really is the way to go.

Combine that with a 5770 (on 1900x1080 resolution) it will be a nice mid level PC, a jack of all trades type of setup.

You would probably only need a x58-UD3 mate (if you go i7), you won’t need the extra features the more expensive boards offer.

If you go the i5, just get a P55 UD3, same as above – just different socket really :)

That DVD RW should be about $35, not $80. Otherwise your pricing/parts list is good and solid.

Thanks Ash,

You make some very valid points with the i5 over i7 - something for me to consider.

I guess the main reason i was going i7 was longer life of the system and the chance i could get hooked on gaming again, but your right if i dont the i7 will be under used/wasted.

ill keep pondering for a week or two and let you guys know how i go.
