ey fellas

doing some homework for an RB25/30DET motor build came across some info (dont quote me i may be wrong) but i need a series 2 RB30 block? due to the fact it has the oil and water galleries and return for the turbo and has the lugs on the front of the block machined flat to mount the tensioners? (please correct me if im worng)

so my question is how do i tell the difference between a series 1 and series 2 motor? or simply is a series 2 motor ut of a vl hence the water and oil feeder galleries? any info will help

cheers

its hard to tell about the front tensioner location cos its hidden behind the timing belt cover, but no not all VL motors are series 2 i think 87 on are, but R31 motors are im fairly sure, u will have to look on the exhaust side for the bungs in the block, the oil return drain is a half inch drive plug, and the other two feeds are just blocked off by little bolt/plugs,

but yes ur description of the two are correct,

Bubba will im sure provide more info

cheers for that man, ive been told aparantly 87 onwards the vl RB30's are series 2 and they said the same thing about the R31 RB30's.. Found a 30 bottom end from a 87 calais and from what i could see behind the timing cover was actually a thread tapped out already for a idler pulley looks like its in the same location as the one ive seen on the RB30DET build thread..hopefully in luck :-)

Good work!

I've only even seen them with the machined boss where the new tensioner has to go, double check it is indeed in the correct spot and you're laughing!

i reckon, made a mistake i think the lower thread is between the last 2 10mm bolts holding wtaer pump to the block from memory and if i saw right where the idler pulley goes, not sure if thats how they came from factory? but above the water pump the block is nicely machined flat for a new tensioner :P going for another look to make sure that that idler pulley thread is in the same spot as the pic in the build thread

    • Hey all, not sure how active SAU is anymore but will ask away anyways. Just wanted to get some experience on the 2008 model GTR CBA model.  I've hit that age in my life (43) where I'm like fk it time to get my dream (midlife crisis) car. Looking at importing one in and seeing if these can be reliable if the main flaws are fixed up. Plan is to keep money aside to do the following straight off the bat to future proof it: * install a stage 1 rebuilt trans with all new bits and pieces.  * install a new Bellhousing from the later model GTRs. Or potentially an upgraded stronger version like MAD or ATR. Besides the above two things and typical maintenance items anything else you'd recommend doing.   Been speaking to a few people and the engine on these are very reliable apparently. But keen on the view of the community here. Hoping to find a nice grade 4.5 with low mileage in Grey. I'd go black but swirls too easy. Look forward to your responses and feedback. Cheers
    • Do Alan and Keith work on Skylines now? I remember buying stuff from them when I owned my Ralliart Lancer a few moons ago. Definitely genuine guys and be excellent if they dealt with the skyline platform as well.
    • Hey all, I'm Gaston from Sydney's West.  I was a member on here when I was a younger lad and owned a mint R33 GTS-T. Ended up selling it and getting married having kids (yadda yadda) we all know how the story goes. Now I'm back with the intention to get my midlife crisis (dream) car ... a R35 GTR.  You'll see me about asking questions and searching the forums. Good to be back and can't wait to get back an Import again.
