So the old girl needs a few dings pulled out and a respray, so I'm thinking of giving her a new colour to go along with it. The two colours that pique my interest atm are Satin Black (leave the rims grey) and Calsonic Blue (powdercoat rims white). I'm leaning towards the blue, as I've actually yet to see a good matte black job in person, and have my doubts about its longevity. How do both these paintjobs hold up? the car is (hopefully) going to be spending a bit of time at the track, so which paint would hold up better? also, i'm after rear and front diffusers, pods and side skirts; who does this stuff in Sydney? anyway here's my car for reference:

I was going to say Satin Black too!

Will look nice.

As long as it is a good paint job done, it will all hold up on the track.

There a many track cars with gloss / satin paint jobs.

Calsonic Blue with White wheels or R33 GTR LM Champion Blue would look nice. (National Skyline GTR colour).

You could go White and powder coat black wheels.

Crystal White or White is the national racing colour of Japan in International Motorsport.

personally i don't like matt or satin paint jobs. they constantly look dirty.

i would have to say that out of the colours you offered to choose from, the blue and white would be my pic.

I've never seen a matte paintjob in person, so is that the issue with them? The only ones I've seen are either in photos which look spectacular, or some dipshit who's sprayed the car with a spray can.

Also, how will the blue hold up? and is Calsonic Blue an actual colour?

Go the blue! I have seen a GTiR in that colour with white Oz Racing rally wheels and it looked awesome! I would go that colour if I was going for a colour change. If you are going to go down the satin black road and you are worried about longevity of the paint, just do it yourself but be a bit different and do it in blackboard paint! if it chips of you just get the roller out and repaint :laugh:

At this point I'm pretty sold on Calsonic Blue. Engine will be coming out soon, so after welding in a rollcage I'm going to spray it inside and out. So, how would i go about getting the right colour or paint code etc.?

i've seen plenty of hotrods done it matte black and they all look bad. a mate of mine has a hilux (4wd version) done in matte red and matte black and it looks pretty average. is painted well, but the matte look just makes it look... i think dull is probably the best way to put it.

I know this thread is a few months old, but I'm also undecided on the satin/matte finish.

My car is going to be black, no question. A good satin black job looks a LOT better than gloss black in my opinion. And the painter reckons it'll hold up just fine. HOWEVER, he has one reservation. If the car gets something on the paintwork that can't be washed off easily, you can simply polish gloss paint. He says that if you ever need to polish the satin paint, it will start to get shinier.

In other words, in a few years time you may have shiny/gloss looking sections on your satin paintwork. And that'll look stupid.

Such a pity........satin black rocks. Observe.
