Like he said, rotors have reliabity issues. If they are however warmed up and cooled down properly the engines should last a long time.

GenesisR32 :A FC is only series 4 or 5. Therefore wat are u gettin at. Also 89 model is not really better then there rest. Being a newer model it would have small advantages, but flooding is pretty common with all fcs. I would say the only reason to go for s5 is rear taillights.

Villainous_J : a fc cab is an awesome car, but it would b very hard to find a manual one as they wer all made auto from factory. so if u ever find a manual, its been changed sometime in its life.

jazza08: are u refering to FC or FD model Rx7?

Mines_Datsun: FD shape started in 1992. Therefore by sayin 95 model is FD, that is correct.

I dont kno 100% the diff between the FC or FD. Im talkin bout an Rx7 Series 6 onwards, the 13B Twin Turbo that comes with those cars? They are um 92' onwards i believe? Can get them anywhere between 30-40k if you look in the right spot, however the series 8 type R etc can be around 70k!!! Im lookin at around the 30k mark.. the lowest range, but still... series 6 are soooo nice. Skylines are just a tad too big and MUCH too common where i am... otherwise obviously its a gorgez car! LoL

EnricoPalazzo, i do know what the *** i am talking about. i did some research on the FCs before deciding on a skyline.

when i mentioned S4 and S5, i was referring to the FC design. S1 to S3 is the old savana shape and beyond S5 is the new infinite shape. jazza08 was asking about RX7 in general and i wasn't sure about which series he's asking about, hence commenting that if he is after the FC shape, he should be looking out for the S4 and S5.

and yes, flooding is common in all FCs, but the engine did generally improved for all 89 model onwards. read about this somewhere. Flooding in a FC is something that leave you stranded and will eat several batteries and starters in the process. It happens when you start the car, then shut it down without it properly warming up. Recommened antidotes are purging all the fuel by removing spark plugs, cranking several times to purge fuel, reinstall plugs, crank again, etc..

and you are incorrect about all FCs Cabriolet being auto from factory.

Even the current generation RX8 which is meant to be the bees knees of rotary economy only gets 12.6L/100km in a "combined" economy run, for only 170kw of power at the flywheel. My R33 gets over 220kw at the wheels (so what, 300 at the fly?) and I get 10.5L/100km on the freeway and 13.5-14L/100km around town so I imagine around the same for "combined". And this is just the base map of a PowerFC, I expect it to improve after tuning (especially the highway economy). The R33 is heavier, too.

You forgot to mention that the rx8 is na and your skyline has a turbo hanging off its engine. Mazda also had to rush the ecu mapping with their rx8's simply to get the car out the door in time. Some guys on rx8club.com have been playing with the ecu mapping and have managed to get an extra 50 rwhp out of the car. The car has an exhaust done to it as well, but thats still over 280 @ the fly, from an NA car. The fact remains that they are petrol guzzlers, but the bad rep about them isn't true, its not the cars fault but the owners. They abuse the crap out of the car by revving its tits off from a cold start and then bitch and moan when their car doesnt run properly. Its a known fact that you have to let the engine warm up and cool down appropriatly, and because they have oil injection they use up more oil than other cars of that class. Not really sure if this is detrimental to the conidition of the engine, but synthetic oils shouldn't be used for any rotary engine, its recomended to use natural.

That video of the fd against the r33 gtr in japan, thats the 255hp rx7, later models like the rz's and rs's have 280hp claimed and the turbo reliabilty issues are solved as well.

Intensevil, I realise it's an NA motor. My point wasn't really to compare power output but economy. I think 170kw from a 1.3L engine is pretty farkin' good. That's the equivalent of a regular NA 2.6L engine, so the power on tap isn't an issue. I'm sure it's an absolute ball tearer with a turbo bolted on or even with the tweaking mods that you mentioned. It's just that they have to go through a lot of juice to make that power because of the way it works similar to a 2 stroke.

u mean the way the ports work is like a 2 stroke? The actual otto cycle is evident in the rotars as well, intake, compression, burn, exhaust. Mazda should really try find a way to make it use less petrol though, their very ineficient

Its light.. so it handles well and is quick off the line, as ive read. And thats what im lookin for, somethin light, sexy, quick with handling. Thats the only reason Im alil weary of a Skyline because Its abit to big for my liking, love da look etc But the size just makes me like an Rx7 abit more...

it's all been said before, but to add the 2c anyway:

* Fuel economy should be a bit of a mute point, given that it is a performance car... however, they're about on par with a r32 GTR - which is it's obvious oppposition (as opposed to a GTST/GTT).

* 100k is the 'rule of thumb' for 13Brew rebuilds - but plenty have gone on way beyond that (depends on how you modify them)

* Reliability with these cars usually has as much to do with the owner

* the early JDM cars 91-95 will do a 13.6 400m and 4.9 0-100. the s7 rz model is slightly lighter and will do about 13.3 or so. From 99 they got an official 280ps (in reality, it's quite abit more) but I haven't seen any recorded times. I'd guess that a spirit-r model would be sub 13 seconds. In Australia and Europe the FD gained a little weight and some pollution gear - which means a low to flat 14 400m is standard - easily remedied though

* they weigh around 1250-1280kg for the average JDM model

Fuel... well ill have to think how i drive in comparision with how deep my pockets are at the time, but im not too much of a rev most of the time as ive been fined big time... n once thats happened... im abit more careful!!!!!! lol
