Twilight Track Day At Eastern Creek

Recommended Posts

White 35 and I have just returned from the Twilight Track Day put on by the circuit club. What a great event. 6 x 20 minute sessions after work including night driving. We were both using stock wheels and rather used road tyres.

I managed to crank out a 1:46:04 and White 35 did a 1:46:68. Not bad for stock wheels and tyres. Cant wait to set some times with slicks.

Can highly recommend this format to anyone looking for a midweek speed fix.

It was good to meet you guys last night also.

Would have preferred to have been at the twighlight track session however the Drags were interesting and different. Ran a consistent 11.9 for the 1/4.

12.03 for the first run

then 11.92, 11.94, 11.93. (Terminal speeds were also consistent at 194km/h (121mph), 193.8km/h on the Performance Box)

Consistent runs, but the start was a little ordinary with wheel spin due to the water they were putting down, the car could only manage a 0 - 100 in 4.1, where as the best I have recorded is 3.8.

09GTR ran the Dunlops and I ran the Bridgestones - both of them absolutely fried...

We are both moving to Volk RE30's and Hoosier R6 slicks in the next month.

Both have AP rotors slotted 09, J Hook on mine and carbotek 12's.

Do you have harnesses Duncan? or a Race seat? i was being thrown around the car in the standard seats...

Jeff could to meet you to dude - we all gotta hook up for the next EC day - i'll email you the stuff we talked about at the servo. Gotta get those quarter mile times down to low 11's...

I was expecting a mid 11, basically 11.6 or there abouts as a stock car, but the launch just not happening.

I look forward to catching up with you guys also and starting on these mods.

Gibbo, it was good to meet you albeit briefly. I did an 11.7 stock. The difference will definitely be the launch. You really do have to "sidestep" the brake as the revs start to slow towards 3300rpm (while boost is still building). To get 3300 rpm I find I have to stomp on the loud pedal as if it were a cockroach heading for my gym bag! I also found that my car got quicker as the night got longer for three reasons: 1)temperatures got lower 2)fuel load got lighter 3) track got grippier.

In fact I've got to the stage on the strip where I know more or less what my time will be based on the launch alone. If you hear a small chirp of the tyres as you release the brake, you're on.

I'm going to go back to the drags when the weather gets cooler, put in some octane booster, dial up 20 pounds and have a crack at a mid ten. White 35 is also keen to come, we'll let you know when we are going.

The Twilight was a great night but I do have some questions of White 35. How can a car putting out identical power (detuned for track), with front and rear sway bars, with a driver that weighs 75 pounds with his clothes on, get done by the red version without sway bars and a driver weighing 220 pounds?

I suppose its true....red ones really are faster!

Well done guys, sounds like a lot of fun. Any more feedback on tyres, brakes? what tyres were you running?

I had the Carbotech 12's at the start of the night, but by the end of the night I just had backing plates!! Seriously, coming into turn one well into the 200's, in the dark, mashing the brakes and having a flurry of bright orange sparks flying over my car, wind-tunnel style, might have looked good, but it didnt feel so good! Suffice to say my front rotors are looking a bit soiled!

That said the braking performance of the carbotechs is special. I wouldn't go back to the MX72s for track use.

Do you have harnesses Duncan? or a Race seat? i was being thrown around the car in the standard seats...

I am running the standard seat with a harness (just a four point). Looking to fit a race seat soon though.

    • Thanks for that Paul.  Do you think if I posted a picture you'd be able to remember where it went?
    • Sorry Duncan, I didn't get a notification for the replies.  Thanks for responding!  It's a full Android device, but does allow you to use CarPlay/AA as well.  This is the one I bought from NaviRS on AliExpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006368602668.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.111.59aa1802JDzQ0E - the 2K 8G-256G CAM variant but it seems to have gone up by £170 since I bought it!  My purchase was £307.14.   It's not the fastest thing in the world but performs perfectly adequately.  It stays on standby unless I disconnect the battery and let it power down, then it's just a fairly standard Android bootup time from cold.  The DSP Equaliser is very nice and made the standard stereo system sound pretty decent compared to the stock screen.  Perhaps I can take a video of it when I get a sec. It *allegedly* supports the reverse camera, but I'm yet to get that working.  It has options for reverse cam (a camera unit can be bought separately) or 360 cameras (also bought separately).  To be fair it doesn't seem to detect that the shifter was put into reverse but I'm working on a theory about this as well.  At the moment I'm going without which is a bit annoying considering the car is an absolute canal barge but so far I haven't caused any damage I'll grab a picture of the wire I'm missing later today when I can get outside.  My theory, by the by, is that not only is the head unit different, but the CANBUS network has different signals for the different years.  I think this because I have a spare AC panel from a newer Infiniti G37 (as opposed to my Nissan panel) which wouldn't control anything except the volume when I had it wired up with the stock system.  I'm going to throw it back in and see if the screen will respond to it.  I've just ordered an arduino CANBUS module so I can have a look at the signals going around the car and see if I can spot anything.  I'm thinking if I can work out what it's expecting vs what it's getting I might be able to translate and relay the signal back but so far just a theory anyway. I also found this on my travels, so far the only one that specifically matches my car: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002822934280.html?spm=a2g0s.imconversation.0.0.33433e5fgttovi If you look at the picture of the before, it has the card reader slot, and the picture of the head unit is exactly the same as the one pictured in my original post.  I asked if they sell the cables separately but sadly they won't.  I didn't want to just buy this one because it's a super old Android version and only dual core - likely slow as hell.
    • As above, you did refill the coolant and burp the system before running it again didn't you?
    • To be fair - you see the same thing for every clutch. There's always someone making an installation error.
    • Just saw this, redacted names. It's on a R33 GTS-t Facebook group. Looks like still teething issues.
