Damo's R32 Gts-r, On Going Project Fun Car. History And Use Full Info

thanks for the kind words guys.

my new rose joints arrived so ive cleaned up the old adjustable JJ arms. and painted the blue ones so they look the same

After talking to a Man in the know it was decided that changing the roll center of the rear without doing the correct calculations may do more harm than good so my half modified sub frame has been put to the side and i spent a bit of time today doing the small mods to my old sub frame. i also wanted to get the car on its wheels and going in the next few weeks so spastically modified sub frame is on hold again.

In an effort to make the car a bit more subtle for my re-entry to motor sport (i havent drifted anything for nearly 12 months) ive painted the D Max rear wing gloss black to match the roof spoiler.

And the bonnet that looked good on the track actually was a spray can job done over 2 winter nights on the lead up to a drift round. the paint was so wet on the morning that my GF put a hand print in it. so the Gun Mr Chad sanded and prepped the bonnet read for a new coat.

coat of saturn black. the pain was not mixed quite right so were not sure if we will go matt or gloss from here.

R34 GTR wheels on the back and 17" CST hyper Zeros on the front.

calipers have been painted silver after seeing a sexy GTR with silver brembos recently. much nicer than red or blue that you see on any old ricer.

i always aim to do more but if im not running the engine in by this weekend ill be sad.

I like the silver subframe and calipers :)

Was it much of a drama getting the new rose joints to suit the arms or are they fairly common?

well if they are imperial (meaning american and speed way useage) they are easy to get but these were metric but turned out to be a common size. i had 3 different brands to chose from and 4 different quality ones to chose from. i got teflon coated middle of the road options as i can aford to replace them many times before buying the expencive shit

the idea behind the silver subfame is not to make it look like a billet alloy one (joke) but light colours show up cracks and oil leaks easy. they also reflect light making working under the car easier.

I painted my engine block light blue for the same reason...makes finding things so much easier.

Ill have to check out what thread my joints are then...

car not has track wheel alignment. race tyres are sorted and should hit the rollers over the next 2 weeks. depends how much time the tuner i use sits in his office on the interwebs.

im pretty happy with the look at the moment so ive taken some pics.

if you look closely in the last pic you can see a riverted carbon panel. its a temporary measure to fix some "body imperfections" untill the wide body goes on.

We took the car out for a couple of hours run in on the weekend. The car's on a very consertive tune ATM, so it'll be interesting to see what it's like when it gets a proper tune.

Great thread Damo the car's looking fantastic. Keep up the good work. Ask your mate if he wants to buy the JZX90 because I want to get an M35 Stagea.

got the car back from the tuner. found some problems that need to be addressed then back on the rollers to see what it will do power wise.

all i can say is wow it has a massive initial punch and comes on strong. the throttles are very noticeable.

bigger turbo time already.

ill be taking it to a club day this weekend to give the car some track time to trial all the bits that have been done over the past few months.

I just realized somthing...was that my old turbo that went bang....I sold you one back in feb 08

Im pretty sure not. it was a Neo turbo that i got of a local bloke who got it off some one off nissan silvia who my have been you now i think of it. who ever he brought it off i got in contact with prior to buying it to make sure it was legit.

I have brought a few other turbos to use on mates cars ect thoe. one of them being a r33 turbo with a blown oil seal for parts.

Ok so a few weeks worth of updates and some more to come in the next few weeks.

so we start with my self inflicted Dyno dramas. first off the car developed a charging issue which i doubted to be the alternator as i had done it up while the engine was out. it turned out to be a plug i had used between the alternator and isolation switch. it had melted due to high current.

i fixed this friday night after doing a few quick jobs on the Porsche i was crewing for in targa. All sweet i though.

than on the saturday morning it developed a cutting out issue. i remembered that we had found that the air flow meter plug lock tab had been broken and the plug kept coming off but had forgotten to repair it before going to the dyno. then the car shut down for a final time and wouldnt start.

When i picked the car up i found that it had a blown fuel pump fuse as during the engine build and subsequent modding the fuse had been swapped over. (or at least thats what im saying)

so i got the car home and started on a list of things to finish off before the weekend track day.

this included fixing the air flow meter plug. the wiring to the alternator and wiring in the air temp sensor in the GTR plenum. then i wired in bens Track Mate data logger ready for the weekend.

i also put in my new second hand oil temp gauge only to find that it didnt work. i had tried it under boiling water before hand thoe to make sure i wasnt waisting my time and it worked fine then.

The knock sensors in the new motor dont seem to work very well so been started to try to remove them ready to replace them with my old knock sensors. he then found that it is impossible to remove them with the plenum hanging off the head. so unfortunately i dont have decent working knock sensors any more.

after sorting out the car we gave the new test pilot the run down on the controls.

so the club day starts off fine with been tweaking the tune ever so slightly. first thoughts of the new engine are grate. then my suspension mans car broke so i offered up a seat. (im very happy to lend a seat to mates as this is a fun car not a greedy car) first lap out and into the second last corner he compression locked the back end spinning him off the track and through a swamp. (well it may as well have been) he continued a few laps then came in and washed the mud out of everything.

during the day i had the car cut out as i was lining up on the start line. i found this to be caused by the air flow meter its self as the plug is now 100% right. So tonight i pulled the AFM apart and found 2 dry solder joints. i fixed them up and put it back together.

it should be on the rollers bey early next week at the latest and i should be able to play with the cam timing a bit as well.

all in all the fun cars back.

Well more self caused dramas on the tuning front.

all sorted for now to get a few events on this new engine.

Car made 200rwkw which is lower than the original 219 bef. but the 2 can in no way be compared which is disappointing.

new power = GTR intake and fresh engine with head work. but also new dyno and smaller turbo (r33 gtst)

old power = original intake. 17 year old engine and r34 neo turbo.

so in the last week ive take the car from this. Track setup and half stripped to remove the mud form the car.

so while every one is at Super Nap ill be at the second round of the state drift series.

well my weekends done and dusted.

Saturday started out ok but half way through qualifying the car developed a miss and was was running on 5.

i qualified 10th out of 18 drivers for the day.

we wipped the plugs out during the lunch brake and one of them was not like the others. so we put a new set in and hoped for the best. unfortunately the miss was still there and i had to retire from my battles. after watching for a bit i decided to start swapping bits off my mates car but still had no luck.

all in all the handling of the car with the cage and seem welding in the front has made it very predictable and the power comes on hard but its lacking about 40kw in the top end.

some modified knuckles are next on the list "to do" after sorting the current issues.

PS: i hate bringing a car home that doesnt work properly.

    • Gents, it will be getting the MX5 Mania kit and the 2.5 will be staying where it is My query was about the 0.64 or the 0.86, whilst the 0.64 might spool a bit faster, would the 0.86 be better IRT EGT and mechanical sympathy, with only a small difference in spool And as I assume I won't need alot of boost to get to 200kw, probably around 10 psi, and with max rpm at 6500, would high EGT even really be a issue with a 0.64 I'm heading into MX5 Mania at the end of Jan to discuss the install, so any info is welcome prior to that Basically have a chat and book a time so they can throw on the turbo kit, and fit a oil cooler with a thermostat, drive in drive out of course  In other news: just finished cleaning the car inside and out, it's now all ready to get covered in bugs and dirt driving to Goulburn tomorrow to lunch,  and go for a stroll along woolondilly River with the daughter and her boy, and of course, visit my grandcats and my new grandpuppy 
    • Sounds like it has an actual problem with mode select doors, or something.
    • Hope your all having a mean Xmas! If anyone happens to know any trick to using the insanely complex climate control system, I cannot get it to not be on dual zone no matter how many times I deselect it (will say it's not but both vents blow different temps). Also one side is always hot, one always cold 🤷
    • I'd be looking at the mentioned EFR kit, room to turn it up if decide on e85 (which we know you will) and be super responsive and fun on the street.
