1000 steps has nothing on my suburbia run

Anyone wanna try? It's only 2.8km :P

Too many girls doing these steps in the hope of losing weight...not realising they're going to gain some pretty large quads by the end of it.

Either that or you see em slamming down sports drinks on the way up, which offsets any weight loss that may have occurred.

Climbing the stairs doesn't actually burn that much energy. I can think of a lot of other exercises which are more full body and less impact on the knees but which burn more energy.

That's correct...you tire out before you break a sweat because it's more than just body resistance when you're battling inclines. Might as well hit the leg press at the gym IMO. I suspect this to be one of the reasons 1000 steps is so popular too...legs wear out long before the heart and lungs are up to full steam, giving you that tired/stuffed feeling earlier on and making you feel like you've done alot for your body.

D: I dont wanna do it any more if thats the case!

It's not that bad lol, you're not gonna become massive overnight. Just keep an eye on your legs...if they're getting too muscular for your liking then stop running it and stick to flat ground running or a good mix of uphills and downhills

Besides you don't look very big anyway...it's usually the girls with wide bone structures / bigger girls who convert their fat to muscle that end up with big looking legs.

I climb the 1000 steps with 20kg rucksack on my back.

Some of the weight is water so that when I reach the top I can have a decent drink and there's less weight on the decent

Another good work out is finding real concrete steps or an incline, and go down on all fours and walk it that way. Full body work out. You can go up head first, and go down head first. Just watch your teeth if you are a gumby.

I dunno how much water you drink at the top but that's the equiv of 20L of water :P. I'd be getting stitches bad if drinking more than a couple of hundred Mls once I'm at the top and have to come back down again!

Like Birds suggested I do leg presses or barbell squats to work on legs and glutes; I presume that's why you carry ballast.

you can have that one all to yourself....nails, knees and pride win here.

 my legs are big enough as is, do not want anything more added to them. though, i'm keen to try the steps, at least once.

I don't have 20L of water in my rucksack!

I only have 2 litres (a couple of drink bottles) Some of that gets drunk at the top. Probably only a couple of hundred ml, but a weight saving is a weight saving!!!

HAhaha

You just have to make sure no one is watching

It is a good workout though. Although pebbles hurt your hands, and bruises on your palms are common.

What else do you keep in your rucksack? Drugs for dealing at the top of the climb? For all the 1000 steps junkies (pun!)?

  • 1 month later...

I went yesterday afternoon, everyone would have still been at work so it wasn't too busy.

If you are heading down Burwood hwy towards mount dandy, take the exit off burwood hwy to go up the mountain and it's the first driveway on the left.
