hey ppl think my turbo is on its way out

was driving fine and then next time i put my foot down it screemed,

am i right in presuming the bearing is just about to give up on me,

i have reved the engine to 6k without getting on boost and there is no noise

then put my foot down started to boost fine then started screeming at about 4k might have been a touch earlier.

its done about 3 years at 12 pound since ive had it, with the odd burst at 1 bar. so done ok i spose

I'm assuming the sound of a failing turbo would be distinct. If you aren't sure, you could take it to a mechanic who specialises in installing turbos. I doubt boost leak. If it was a boost leak you would still get the spooling sounds, just no performance, or severely less performance.

Is it the ceramic turbo or have you had a stainless steel turbine put in it? You can buy stock R33 turbo's for a couple hundred dollars or have your one rebuilt for a little more and run it on more boost.

my FMIC had a leaky join (nothing a good norma clamp didn't fix) that sounded like the stock turbo was on the way out... but i eventually tracked it down to the FMIC area and got a couple $4 norma clamps, and redid all the joins/piping etc... pulled it apart, put it back together nice and tight and it was sweet.

It sounded nasty, and was like a high pitch scream kinda :D but was only a leak in the end and the turbo was 100% when we pulled it off and put a highflow on.

well those replies are very positive

i just had the intake pipe off and felt for shaft play, there seems to be none at all up down left right, but a little bit front and back but it wouldnt be more the a mm or so i reckon,

i also had a small magnet in there but couldnt get it stick to the front wheel although it did look like a steal wheel, but arent they a nylon wheel on the s2 r33??

i once got an intercooler setup done on a turbo NXR, i thought it had this new awesome induction noise! later i realised the massive high pitched scream was from the back 2 nuts on the turbo to manifold gasket my (former) mechanic had undone for a little extra revenue.

with the above mentioned topics, they are all fairly simple, give them a go. check all ur pipping, and if not buy a turbo and dump gasket and take the turbo off for inspection. if its rooted you will know when it comes off, and ull probably find its an easy job anyhow.

You probably find sections of turbine wheel's missing. I've had this issue when I bought my R33 test car. Once that material is missing the turbo is out of balance. So at high RPMs the noise you heard is vibration through the shaft.

Well check gasket and cooler pipe leaks before pull the turbo apart. Could be some thing very simple.

id get someone who knows a fair bit to come have a look or just pull the turbo off. mine went last week it sounded like a cop siren! so i had a closer look checking all the above mentioned. after i pulled it off both wheels looked fine wasnt till i shone i tourch and stuck my head right up to it a piece from one of the impeller blades had chipped off, from the turbo spinning out of balance as mentioned above.

checked all the cooler pipes and vac lines, still noisy

looks like ill be pulling dump off to inspect the turbine wheel tomorrow. hoping for the best, expecting the worst

this will really put a dent in my 26 projecy

if the noise is a lous hissing, then i'd say its probably just a leak...

spray some soapy water or carby cleaner all over your intake side gaskets and see if it bubbles up anywhere...

ok so coated intake side with carby cleaner and couldnt see anything out of the ordinary,

pulled dump and front pipes off to have a good look at exhaust wheel, all is there and looks in good and no shaft play from that side either

however could this noise be coming from a leaking exhaust gasket, as i can see a little bit of oil leaking out of the bottom of it,

also best tool for bashing a cat??

is the car sluggish at all? or is there no loss of power?

to bash out my cat i used a strong metal rod, hammer, vice and over an hour of non stop bashing it. however im not using my gutted car nemore wanna buy it im in alexander heights ?

cant you run the car with the intake off to see if the sound is from the comp wheel? just try running it hold the revs high enough and try locate it properly no point guessing lolol if its internal try using a stethoscope on the parts u think the sound is coming from you will hear alot more clear if theres grinding etc..

i know the sounds =) my RB20 had this scream when coming on boost! turns out it was the gasket between the Turbo and the Exhaust manifold it had blown out.. and you couldnt really see it.. when looking for the problem i saw a little tag slightly hanging out when the gasket should have been. when i pulled the turbo off.. the gasket was f**ked! replaced it.. and all good! hope this helps!
