Hello All,

Geez its been a while since ive been on here.. anyway here goes...

Forgot to add this (its a 2001 Stagea RS4S - Manual) 2.5lt neo engine

I took the car in to Pedders today to get a suspension check as having a wheel allignment and balance done didnt fix the shake in the steering wheel. Here is what was found.

Shocks - Front - Fail!! - Soft, Lacking control (recommend replacement)

Springs - Pass

Bump Stop - Pass

Strut Mount plates - Pass

Lower ball joing - Pass

Lower control arms and inner bushes - Pass

Upper Ball Join - Pass

Upper control arm and inner bushes - Pass

Radius rod and bushes - Pass

Leading arm and bushes - N/A

Outer Tie Rod ends - Pass

Sway Bar Bushes - Pass

Sway Bar Links - Fail - Ball Joint worn

Steering Gear - Fail - RACK and MOUNTS WORN (NEED REPLACEMENT)

Power steering pump - Pass

P/S lines/Belts/Filter/Oil - Pass

Wheel Bearings - 3 pass 1 Fail (Passenger Rear)

Tyres - Fail (Uneven Wear OUT OF ROUND)

Shock Absorber Travel on the Front left = 45mm and on front right = 33mm... (Should this be like 20mm????)

Now what i am after, seeing as i am located in Launceston Tasmania, is where i can get some of these parts??

Does anyone know what price i would be looking at and what i should get genuine etc.. (i rekon - without having checked yet that a genuine steering rack would probably cost BILLIONS... But like i said i have not checked yet....

Any suggestions for type of parts? i.e. Aftermarket or factory?

The car is predominantly used by my wife for karting the kids around and so on... So i am not really after some hardcore suspension set up. But i did get told that if i was to get they guys at pedders to source the items for me i would be looking at 3-4k. And frankly i dont have that kind of $$$$ to just hand over without consideration..

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Hey mate, first of all try a second opinion. You might be pleasantly surprised of the outcome. Second not sure about the rack but I just replaced my rack rubber mounts this morning. I got polyurethane ones from super pro. I have a RS4S 98' so should be exactly the same. Part number is SPF2681K $40. Got them through Fulcrum Suspension, I found they were the cheapest which I found out is because they own Super Pro! Took me about 2 hours to do it. Not to hard to do, just a little bit fiddly.

Regarding the suspension i'm going through the exact same thing at the moment too. Im going with bilsteins but they should be able to get you OEM for cheaper if you cant spend the cash.

I will also post something in the WTB section but as i am here right now if anyone knows how much i would be looking at for a steering rack for a 2001 Stagea or has one for sale let me know via pm please...

hey mate um i have a mate that brought a half cut of one and he would have a steering rack and mite have a couple over things do you want his number ?

As said the rack mount bushes are cheap and easy, the front sway bar ball joints you can get from nolathane i beleive, around the $150 ish mark from memory.

Front shocks wont be to hard to get, or a rear wheel bearing.

Are they sure the rack is stuffed? Might just be the excess movement from the bushes and or tie rods?

I will get a 2nd opinion on monday from Jaxx here in launceston however i dont really know where else to go. Here in Launceston there is Pedders Suspension and a few tyre shops, but Pedders is the only real suspension place that there is that i can think of... I suppose i could go to RACT or Midas or something aswell... Not much choice around here... I will also look into the parts needed, i have got a rear wheel bearing through Tas Driveline. They said the latest ones they have are for a C34 Stagea from 99. So i hope that they are the same.... I know nothing about them... Hope it fits...

On the suspension side of things, the main thing that i want is for it not to be rock solid like my old skyline... i am after a factory feel. but if i can get that with some coilovers then i might consider it... Does anyone know anything about the pedders sports ryder Coil overs? i got suggested them, but for the price i dont know if Tein ones or Blistien ones are going to be better/worse.... I am looking for build quality and ride comfort...

there is a guy that works at the new autobarn who has a silver rs4s too so if you need to order parts i would consider using him

as for suspension you could try and source some new front shocks and get a suspension place to install them (same as r33 gtr up front, back is similar but differently valved) or look on ebay at the bc (buddyclub) coilovers

someone recently installed them in his m35 and said that on the softest setting that they were just a bit firmer than stock

if you want to diy the install i could give you a hand (i'm a pro at car park repairs lol, currently changing a mates rear wheel bearing on his bmw in the utas carpark)

That would be me :D .

BTW, BC isn't short for Buddyclub in this instance. My BC's are the "BR" version.They are a fair bit firmer than stock, (or at least my boat spec, worn stockers, which NM35's seem to be renowned for) but they definitely aren't harsh and crashy over bumps and rough roads (of which, I drive on a few), just well damped and nicely controlled.

Mine have been in for nearly 2 months now, and I have had no issues at all, if anything, the suspension deflection over small bumps (i.e. pockmarked roads) has actually improved, so the ride is actually more supple than when first installed.

In my opinion, they perform better than a "budget" coilover kit has any right to :blush: . I can only recommend them, based on my experience so far.

its really unlikely the rack itself is stuffed, but there are both inner and outer tie rods that do wear. I would strongly suggest changing the inner tie rods and see if that fixes it all up - these steering racks have this wierd nylon bush in them that wears over time.

i've heard a lot of ppl on boost complain of poor workmanship at boost, i dunno who to believe :D

yeah it gets like that, i think the only way you will find out is if you go there your self, people can only tell you what happened to them and most of the time they make it out a lot worse than it was!

I have only got tires and 4 wheel alignment and car inspection there, they seemed to know what they where talking about, Rons Auto is where any work gets done on the stag.

sounds good, the gc meet and great was good so maybe a tassie one is in order too

may also involve some "fun" driving seeing as we have such awesome roads down here - you may have to show me your favourite routes

Thanks for the info mate, i rekon i will swing by there tomorrow and have a chat... see what he rekons... Sarah might be getting a company car soon which means the stag might be able to get a few perks.... will have to see,... got to fix a few things first

    • I'm pretty much healed up post surgery so I spent another almost full day out in the shed re-arranging everything to make room for all of the shit that I've taken off the car.  I need to get everything off the floor and away from the car for when I start making a massive mess stripping off the remaining body deadener and then for the the painting process.  Almost got the shed to a point now where I feel I can actually start working on the car again (clean shed clean mind or something!).  Almost 11 years of accumulated car parts, building supplies, tools, junk, etc have taken a long time to get in some sort of order again!  Most stuff is now boxed up and in the back shed if it's not car related.  Most people would still be horrified walking into my shed but it's significantly better than it was before!   For those that saw my separate post the other day, yeah I ordered one.... This version- I convinced myself to stop being a clown, wake up to yourself and realise it will take you 5 weeks to make one by which stage you're over working on the car again...  Maybe I am getting on top of my "mental ailments" and making smarter choices.... $1450 delivered which will take my miserable half-dutch arse a few days to get over having spent that much!  If I don't have a use for it straight away after my car is off it I might even see if there is a "rental market" for them.  See if anyone wants to hire it for a period of time.  $25 a week or something like that.  I'll worry about that when my car is actually ready to come off it though as that might be a while away!! There's now no excuses now for not ending up with an underside you could eat off! Away for kids sport the next few weekends so hopefully can get the rotisserie assembled ready to go for the car to go straight on it the next available weekend.    
    • I always use my Karcher, but it's only a little one that I picked up from Supercheap  The only issue I ever had with a pressure washer was when I was a kid cleaning coaches, they had a hi-po industrial sized petrol jobbie that would strip paint if you got to close I saying this, we have a fairly high power washer at work with a diesel powered heater that sprays water at about 60°c, it works great for removing old wax and road grime on the underbody after some foam cannon action, albeit from a "stand off" distance of a few feet
    • Sorry no - The sandtrap adventure ended the day, happened at the end of the last session. At that time I wasn't hearing any weird noises nor were the brakes shuddering anymore. It was only when watching the videos that I remembered I had these sounds early on!
    • Did the noise appear after your sand trap adventure? Could be something got dislodged and is playing rub rub. Even a rock wedged somewhere.
    • Is there a shroud around the tailshaft spline into the back of the box? They can rub and make a horrible noise if they are not on straight/damaged. The heat might have caused it to grow too much in one direction and rub.
