I am up for a registered and reliable car that will be fun on the track. I like Skylines (because I can fit in one) and at $18k it is much less of a write off worry.

What needs to be done? Suspension and tyres are a start. Are the brakes ok? What about the stock intercooler. How much weight could you get out of one? Power levels would be kept lowish for reliablity.

Anyone with experience of their own car?

Just let you know it dont work... :D

but if you put RB26DETT then It'll fly! :P

cheers

Go the R32 GST-t Type M.

It's got R33 GTS-t brakes, without the extra weight.

4WD is good, but can be troublesome. If it is a track hack, then RWD is the way to go as any 4WD will understeer. Also cheaper to fix if something goes bang inside (which is very likely).

Any car with suspension and brake modification will have a very distinctive advantage over cars that have engine mods only on the track. Arrive at corners sooner but having to brake earlier and losing time through corners because you cannot balance the car and keep it on the racing line, vital time will be lost.

Tyres, as usual are also vital. Get a set of slicks and you'll be very happy.

Engine swaps and things go against the whole reliablity aspect I am after.... With the R32 or S13 the oldness factor goes against it for me. Am I wrong in thinking that?

Also what is the difference with the 4WD blocks. I presume the front left driveshaft goes through the sump or something.

I was thinking R31 coupe with RB25DET myself. Dedicated track car makes it much easier - no rego, no interior etc etc The guys at Powerplay can get hold of em cheap.

No so handy for cruises tho.

I would have it as a dedicated track car, but still with rego and stuff, for convenience. I don't have a tow car or a big workshop. Also it is much cooler to turn up and whip people's arse in the car you came in...

Personally i like the idea of a dedicated track track car as distinct from your daily or road car, it works out a hell of alot cheaper. Apparently somewhere sells things like R32 GTSt for $6K (was in TP), imported as race cars unable to see the road. Something like that would be great to throw minimal amounts of cash at and the financial risk of destroying the thing is minimized....

If you have a rego'd R33 its still going to cost you $18K give or take if you have a big moment at the track??

If you are looking for cheaper, get an R32GTSt typeM (with the bigger brakes) and put an RB25DET in it. Will still cost you less than a 33, plus have a lighter car.

As for removing weight in the 33, depends on how crazy you want to go. There is atleast 50kg's of tar sound deadening on the flooring, plus other stupid things like aircon, back seats, etc. Also, in between the rear seat and battery compartment, there is a really heavy metal divider plate. Replace that with some Aluminium or something and you'd save heaps of weight there also. Plus the 100,00km's of unnecessary wiring too......

$18k of GTS-t is much better than $55k of GT-R, it's all relative I guess. I go to plenty of sprints and see dented $220k 911 GT3's.

At least a GT3 will take the punishment and keep coming back for more. I have discovered GT-R's aren't quite as tough on the track as they appear on the road. Even with only minor mods.

    • Anyone want to make me an offer to take my v36/g37 3.7l manual coupe in full? Off memory it was low 100k km but the battery is flat so can't tell right now. What's wrong. I had engine problem's that led to a nice clunk. It made it home but it wasn't pretty for the last few kms. Happened under revs. Sounds like bottom end.. never got around to fully checking or fixing it so the car has sat still and unregistered for a few years. Minor bump in front end set the pedestrian protection under bonnet airbag off and that was meant to be repaired, but while waiting for the repair (parts to come) I got the engine problem. The rest of the car is in decent condition. All drive line is good. All interior is good. Leather interior. Wheels in good condition and decent tyres although the ps4s are likely a little too old now it's sat still. Colour of the car is pewter off memory, the dark grey colour. In Camden NSW. Would need a tray back pickup.

    • I started with the above in my head too, and I might be reading / thinking about what they want wrong, which is why I complicated it a bit further. Purpose I'm seeing is for the corner indicator to be on with headlights, and then if the indicator turns on it can still flash. The relay part above I can see working as required, except in the case of headlight is on, and indicator is on. The change over relay you've wired in would get signal from the indicator, and as it flashes would give power to the globe from the indicator, but as it flashes off, power comes from the headlight, which would cause the indicator to be constantly on when headlight is on, even while indicator change over is flashing. That is unless we don't care if it flashes or not if the headlight is on? I guess that's an OP clarification.
    • HI, Ive got an r34 gtt sedan A/T. The instrument cluster went out and I replaced it with another A/T everything visually looks the same and all the gauges work now with the exception of the speedometer and odometer. The speedo will stay pinned at zero until I'm going about 55kmh and then it'll say Im going about 5kmh. my odometer seems to be tracking at about a 1/10 of what it should. If I go 1km it'll say I've only gone 0.01. Appreciate any and all help. Ive tried searching through the forums reddit and a local fb group. The only info I think I've found is that some cars didnt come equipped with TCS (mind is) and the clusters may be different between those? I've also installed a brand new VSS and no joy obviously. TIA.
    • what speedo healer did you use?
