How can I tell whether my water pump on the way out? Just noticed the other day i did about 200km in relatively hot conditions (about 30 up here atm). When I went to check the water, there was a significant amount that had disappeared, and it required about 3L refill. The temperature guage during driving hadn't crept up though. Apparently that is one sign that the water pump is on its way out. How quick can it happen? Will it gradually get worse and worse, or one day will it just stop pumping water completely and then big badness unless u let it cool down.

My car has done about 93,000km, and its about time for the 100,000km service I guess. Was planning on getting it done in the next month or so, and still would like to stretch that a bit closer to 95,000km if i at all can.

Also: oo'm not sure whether this is just co-incidence or not, but also in the last week i have noticed coolant leaking into the cabin - although I think that may be a heater hose going. I think the amount of water leaking in there can't just be attributed to the amount missing from my radiator though.

My reservior was pretty much full before, and it had drained that and was starting on the radiator water. But like i was saying, I don't think the amount was leaking into the cabin was that much - just a few drops, but noticeable (stinks too!)

Thanks jetdat, i will try doing that tomorrow. I'll also check more thoroughly the heater hoses, etc to find the source.

*EDIT: its not water pump, but problem with the heater and climate control system. See other thread

gordo, from the description of your problem, i had exactly the samething. Km wise is close to yours. Coolant were leaking everywhere. was dropping down quite quick. Checked all hoses and seem all ok. water pump seem to be on the way out as i can see some coolant leaking from it. did a compression test from the radiator and it appears loosing pressure. hmmmm, screw the radiator cap on really tight and since then it seems all fine. weird i know but it could be something really simple like the radiator cap not screwing on tight enough. after a few months down the track, coolant didn't drop at all, water pump seem to be ok :P miracle i'll say..
