hey guys

just wondering when welding up the water gallery on the 25 head you use a 30 head gasket as a template ive seen pics on another thread and i dont see what there is to weld? proengines showed a pic of what they did and it doesnt look like they welded anything or are they "opening" the water gallery up to suit the 30? wouldnt it be just as easier welding the block to suit the 25 head and use a 25 head gasket?

When you stick the rb30 gasket over the rb25 head it should be easier to see the problem, the vct oil gallery feed on the head and the water gallery next to it, which is located at the front of the engine on the intake side. The vct feed needs to be welded up so it doesnt leak into the water gallery, and the water gallery has next to no sealing area for the gasket so some metal has to be welded onto the edge, sand it back flat, grind out the extra metal using the gasket as a template then deck the block.

If you havent got a gasket check the before and pics of the link you posted and you can see the new water gallery hole is much shorter

you have to weld up the head for the vct feed regardless, so its probably easier modifying the head

Here is a RB25DE cylinder head off a R33 GTS

I have circled the VTC feed and the water gallery.

Here is the same head with an rb30 head gasket.

The water gallery comes quote close to the edge of the head gasket. I personally would fill most of the gallery up and use a dremel to reopen it to the size of the head gasket. VTC oil feed can be blocked / welded completely.

this should give you a idea of where the extra is welded in. the red bit on the bottom is the new filled in with weld bit. the side line of red is the shaping of the rb30 gasket. if you dont do the red bit at the bottom the rb30 gasket only seals on about 1-1.5mm of surface. by welding it you get full surface area.

cost me $110 to get it welded and shaped and resurfaced. i didnt know to get it done when i got the vct hole welded and the head rebuilt the first time. take about $60 off the price if you get it done at the right time so you dont pay for head refacing again like i did.

that does help me understand it more, when i finich the block and start head work ill use the info i just got and some pics to show the guys who do our head work and leave it to them... just wanting to get some info on it so i no what im on about

these pics deffinatly help, thanks saved them along with the comments on them so i can show the guys doing my headwork, and now understand why it has to be welded up for sealing purposes

thanks for the pic i looked at your other ones on your thread and couldnt really see where you got it welded besides the vct aha now that you have marked it out makes things alot clearer.. thanks for the help

i spoke with a welder yesterday, he suggested that the water gallery be opened to the shape of the gasket then close up what remains of the oil feed.

when i get my collet remover i'll take the valvetrain out and get it done with some pics.

but im sure u get the idea now...

yea thats what a picture in that link i posted of the head proengines did, it looked like they opened it up to suit the gasket and welded the bottom part of the gallery..

if you dont mind posting more pics when you get yours done, just to give me more to show the guys doing my head and for my knowledge aha
