I've started using one - although I haven't remotely looked at the datalogging side of things yet.

I mostly got one to have the data-overlay on the video. Video wise it works brilliantly - although I'd prefer it if the camera's were a wider aspect like my old POV was.

Yeah you can definitely get a CAN interface for the R35. You can't do it easily for the R34 (when using a Power FC) which is why I haven't bothered.

I've seen somewhere an awesome on screen dash for the VBox with an R35 using the actual R35 Clutster with the gear selection etc all in place.

Mark,

We installing the Video VBox pro in my R35 a couple of weekends ago and hardwired it to receive the CAN signal. You can also purchase an OBD connector for the system which makes it easy to quick connect to the OBD port under the dash (if you are not leaving the Vbox installed permanently). I've got the R35 scene (dash) running which Snowy mentions in his post, took a bit of hunting around to get this as it is not included with the system nor from Racelogics scene download area on their website.

The software that comes with the Video VBox (i presume it is the same software for the lite version) allows you to customise the scene to show a variety of CAN parameters such as throttle and brake, steering angle, oil and trans temps etc etc, pretty much all the items that you can view on the in car MFD screen. Racelogic have also just released a new circuit software tool which allows you to view your track footage frame by frame against another driver who might have done some laps in your car. Pretty handy for working out where time can be made up if you have a pro do some laps in your car for comparison.

With regards to the wider lens I purchased a wide angle lens for the camera which only turned a couple of days ago, apparently to install it you have to take the whole camera out and have it refocused rather than just screw the new lens on, will check it out and see what has to be done.

I've customised the R35 scene to include best lap times, current lap times and splits so it's a pretty useful tool.

I'll try to get some pics of the install on the weekend and post them for you. If you have any questions with it feel free to give me a call.

Cheers

Hi Snowy,

I picked up the wide angle lens from Racer Industries who are a dealer for the Video VBox. I'm sure Protech in Melbourne would also be able to source it for you as this is who I purchased my VBox pro from. I'll have a look tomorrow re how the lens installs and post some info.

Yes, the Penske's are fitted up however the car hasn't been off the hoist since they were installed last week as we are finishing off some other work at the same time. Hoping to get on the track shortly to test all the new gear out.

Cheers

SlipR35.

Wide angle lens' distort the action and distances, unsuitable for incar video in my opinion. What you need is a *wide screen* capable camera, here is an example using an inexpensive HD camcorder

How much more width than that do you need? Note there is no distortion either.

Seb,

you've got everything for that damn car of yours lol

Vbox lite up and running as per Dunc. Lame early video runs look good.

Getting it hardwired to car for power, CAN bus and video out for the dash screen.

Seb, would you mind emailing the gtr scene?

Yes the analysis software for the lite seems to have much of what you are talking about with the pro. Very good.

Very interested in suspension setup for the r35, might start a separate thread.

thanks for the scene Seb

I have the CAN module hooked up. The Vbox lite version only has 4 channels available so I am logging Brake and throttle pedal pressure, RPM and steering angle

I have had Chris from Audio express hardwire the CAN, power and conceal allthe cables to camera mojunting positions. nice setup.

also getting video output to the MFD which will be handy!

Tip for those as new to this as me: dont unplug the unit whilst it is powered up and hooked into the CAN bus with the car running... freaking thing lights up like a christmas tree

Here are a couple of my vids using it.

Targa Wrest Point -

ATC Lang Lang -

But here is a comparison to the old POV to give you an understanding what I'm talking about with camera angles

Targa Tas -

Spa -

The second ones are in widescreen, amazing if the later system did not offer widescreen, plus HD as well.

anyone here a gun on the vbox at working out how to set up steering angle input from the CAN?

I have 2 horizontal bar graphs next to each other

bit hard to explain in words but here i go...

one on the left (to track turning the wheel left of centre) has the bar graph traveling from centre (right to left) but I cant get the min max values sorted (I would have thought min value 0 and max negative 500 degrees opposite to the other graph but it wont allow a max with a value less than the min)

one on the right travels from left tot right and is working well with min angle 0 to max 500

degrees

otherwise have all the other can inputs for brake/throttle and rpm working well! this thing is so configurable its awesome. if only I was as smart as it.

will post some video once I get this sorted and track the car may 12

i have the same opinion. I've borrowed a go pro HD, didnt like the wide angle. gives you no sense of turn in etc.

I've been using racechrono to data log for a while now. For something that is free and the hardware costing next to nothing its pretty damn good.

times come out within .01 of natsoft.

(720p camera and racechrono hardware all under $700)

the r33 doesnt have ODBII but the r35 will?. there is an ODBII reader for racechrono. they recommend 4-5 channels i think.

throttle, brake, rpm etc

    • It still combines inches with mm, especially when you have .5 inches involved, and mm and inches that can go in either direction. This would give a clear idea on both sides of the rim, right away, with no arithmetic. Even better if somebody gives you the dimensions of the arch of multiple cars. i.e GTR may be 125mm, a A80 Supra may be 117mm, or something along those lines. Yes, you can 'know' that going from a 10in rim to a 10.5in rim with the same offset moves both sides about 6mm, but you still have to 'know' that and do the math. Often it's combined. People are going from 9.5 +27 to 10.5 +15. You may do the math to know it, but if it was going from (I had to go look it up to be sure) 241mm/2 - 27 - 93.5mm from the center line to (more math) 266/2 - 15 (118mm) from the center line. Versus 93mm vs 118mm. It's right there. If you know you have a GTT with 100mm guards you can see right away that one is close to flush and the other absolutely won't work. And when someone says "Oh the GTR is 120mm" suddenly you see that the 10.5 +15 is about perfect. (or you go and buy rims with approximately 118mm outward guard space) I think it's safe to say that given one of the most common questions in all modified cars is "How do offsets work" and "How do I know if wheels will fit on my car" that this would be much simpler... Of course, nothing will really change and nobody is going to remanufacture wheels and ditch inches and offset based on this conversation :p We'll all go "18x9+30 will line up pretty close to the guards for a R34 GTT (84mm)" but 'pretty close' is still not really defined (it is now!) and if you really care you still have go measure. Yes it depends on camber and height and dynamic movement, but so do all wheels no matter what you measure it for.
    • But offsets are simple numbers. 8" wheel? Call it 200mm, near enough. +35 offset? OK, so that means the hub face is that far out from the wheel centreline. Which is 2s of mental arithmetic to get to 65mm to outer edge and 135mm to inner. It's hardly any more effort for any other wheel width or offset. As I said, I just close my eyes and can see a picture of the wheel when given the width and offset. That wouldn't help me trust that a marginal fitment would actually go in and clear everything, any more than the supposedly simple numbers you're talking about. I dunno. Maybe I just automatically do numbers.
    • Sure! But you at least have simple numbers instead of 8.5 inches +/mm, relative to your current rims you do maths with as well, and/or compare with OEM diameter, which you also need to know/research/confirm..
