Food, Beer, Talks, People, Cars, Beer and laughs!

These social meetings are divided into two parts, the first if your hungry is a meal from the bistro and a chance to have a chat with other members then the second is a short informal meeting.

We use these meetings to give quick rundowns on past events with video's, pictures and stories etc, to address pressing matters, tell members what's happening behind the scenes and for discussion on upcoming events. It's all pretty relaxed and fun. This is a great opportunity for those of you who don't know too many members to come down and mix as new faces are always welcomed.

Time - 8.00pm start, dinner from 6.30 ish

Date - Tuesday 16 March 2010

Location - Bell's Hotel, 157 Moray St, South Melbourne (Cnr Moray St & Coventry

St Melways Ref - 57, G1)

Note - This Pub is family friendly with an area set aside for us. There is plenty of seating (tables and chairs) and meals for all.

Who is welcome - Everyone!

UPDATE:

GUEST SPEAKER

Will Day will be guest speaking (thanks Pat for organising).

Here is a bit of a run-down of what he will be chatting to us about, he spent a lot of time with Nissan in the Test & Dev in the era of the R32 GTR :D

1. In production – We were still building R31 Skylines (including SVD) together with Pulsars and Pintaras when I was in manufacturing.

2. In development – I was in the test group for the whole development program of the N14 Pulsar. We also did the local certification of the R32 GTR and can explain the local mods that were made.

3. Spare parts support – Some of the horror stories for ongoing supply of spares, particularly on low volume specials like the GTR and SVD Skyline GTS.

MERCHANDISE

- Let me know if there is anything you would like me to bring along for you to look at.

Hope to see you all there.

1. In production – We were still building R31 Skylines (including SVD) together with Pulsars and Pintaras when I was in manufacturing. I could speak a little about how good (or bad) these cars were to build.

2. In development – I was in the test group for the whole development program of the N14 Pulsar. We also did the local certification of the R32 GTR and can explain the local mods that were made.

I think this will be quite interesting - make sure you come along!

Ive managed to pull a fair bit of strings at work and have managed to talk my boss into coming down to the meet as a guest speaker.

He used to be a test engineer at the nissan manufacturing plant in Victoria and then became Engineering Manager, National Parts Division.

This was during the late 80's to early 90's and includes developing and building the R31 SVD, R32 GTR and N14 Pulsar SSS

He has a load of stories about the build quality of these cars, r32 gtr certification (including test drives and its thrash-ability  ) and souring spare parts when they broke back in the 90's.

I would like everyone to come as Ive put in a lot of effort to get him!!!!!!!!

Giving you a chance to ask about the R32 GTR when it was released in Australia in mint condition! Dont waste this opportunity!!!!

Back to you Ash

    • Appreciate the feedback. It is street car, but not a daily. Last week I got a quote from a good exhaust shop for a decat, one which is bolt-on, bolt-off to be easily replaceable. I got quoted for around €150. I usually do push the motor, but I wasn't in this case to make sure that no damage is done until I get the cat sorted. I think it's best to also ask the exhaust shop for the other option and see what they can do. If (big if) I were to decat though, would it be best to tune the car or would the stock ECU handle it? As far as I know, the stock ECU is not tunable and that would require additional purchases.
    • As above, definitely bash it or get it replaced with a high flow unit.
    • get some flares on them, or wider guards haha
    • Another question sorry, what stainless do u use in the turbo external WG plumb back piping? Is it 321, 316 or 304?
    • Right, its been a while for updating this car, but I made some small but important progress today. In the end I bought an Ecutek dongle from the Australian distributor Tunehouse (for local hardware support) but have gone with a remote tune from Racebox in the US (because they have done millions of these, and I could not find any tuner where I could access the tune anyway as they are all password locked). The App is reasonably easy to work with, but the PC software reminds me of Haltech's ECU Manager that you need to use with the Plat Pro ECUs, it is a nightmare.  Anyway, I sent the details over, got back a tune file and a request for data logs. I finally got a chance to access a private test track today as they want redline logs in 3rd and 4th, and have sent them back for the first round of reviews. The main difference in the tune is going from 1.0 (stock) to 1.3 bar (19psi), although I'm sure is a lot of other stuff in the background. Keeping in mind this is a dead stock car with 125,000klm, this is what the App's performance test claimed: Before After Interesting to note that both 400m tests had the same terminal speed (158klm/h) but different ETs. And no, the speed limiter seems to be higher than that at 186kl/h. Summary of the key logged parameters for the 3rd and 4th gear runs were: Those little turbos were certainly whizzing at 200,000rpm+.  Also I'm really not that excited about oil pressure 55psi at redline so I think I'll go thicker than 5w30 (nissan recommend 0w20....) and see if that improves it. Other than that (and the big boost spike....) everything looks good as a start to me.
