180sx = old, 1980's tech, inefficient, lots of cheap spare parts, cheap aftermarket parts

350z = newer, 2000's tech, more efficient, spare parts are expensive, aftermarket parts are expensive.

both can be as fast as the other, at the end of the day the size of your wallet will dictate what you go with. as for track, if you're getting into proper racing classes, since the 180sx was never sold in oz it may not qualify in a few categories that the 350z will. if you're just getting into it as an amature, use a 180sx and bash it hard, rather than trying to baby a 350z around cos it costs more.

i have owned a 350z - they have no traction turbo or no turbo , great cornering but still feel heavy steering wise , but thats about it.

NO TRACTION , great for drift

im glad you added that last line i was gunna ask how they are great for cornering if they got no traction they sound epic for drifting... but imagine the tears when ya slap that into a gutter/pole ... repairs would be more then a whole new 180sx id say

how do you correct and adjust in a car that struggles for traction? just cos it skids doesn't make it a great drift car. if that was the case we'd all be using commodores.

i'd go a 350GT V35 over a 350Z Z33, the chassis just feels better to control. Plus it's probably cheaper compared to some oz delivered detuned bucket that used to be owned by some middle management shmuck that doesn't believe in depreciation.

no grip. so true. i drove my mate's 350z track 6sp. i drove it fast but carefully, since it's not my car. it seemed to handle brilliantly when kept within reasonable limits.

then he drove. i said, show me what its got. we proceeded to fishtail, donut, and basically travel sideways for the next 10 mins. lol.

exactly, original post was kind of asking how long a piece of string is

you guys talking about the same 350z?

on the contrary I take "no traction" as sliding around uncontrollably, Yes I agree the 350z is a very 'tail happy' car as in you can induce oversteer on command fairly easily, but I felt it always felt very controllable

ie; a 350z powersliding was more due to driver input & choice rather than horrible car dynamics forcing the car to slide around

Did actually. My mate owned the first black one in Townsville. Took me for a spin and let me drive it. He told me to do it, i wasn't game but he said i wouldn't be able to loose it. Mind you it was a wide road out of town and i took it wide just in case. But 60km/h into a corner no twitching, no chirp of tyres, nothing, just held the corner beautifully. Amazing cars (not the best looking), handle like they are glued to the road.

Never driven a 350Z so can't compare, but by the sounds of things, the 370Z is light years ahead in suspension setup/weight balance.

The only thing that i can compare in having the same handling is my mates old Evo. If you didn't tell me the 370Z was RWD i would have sworn it was AWD.

most 180s are driven and trashed used as drift cars and you would almost never see them in good condition anymore. pity but true. as for 350zs, too expensive and modifying it is an utter pain in the ass (try removing the exhaust manifold or find correct wires to solder your gauges in,etc). but dont see how you can compare them tho. 350zs got a 3.5L V6 and 180 depending on model either the CA18 or SR20 which is a 1.8L and 2.0L respectively.

what this man said.... could not have said it better myself!

no traction makes a car SHIT for drift....

Drive a 370Z, you won't get it to break traction no matter what. I went into a 90 degree turn at 60km/h and coudnt get it to break loose. Fantastic handling.

THIS.

370Z's are awesome, all the good things about a 350Z without all the shit things about a 350Z. Handling is epic due to shorter wheelbase, good power, good looks. Amazing car. I'd buy one in a heartbeat if it didn't have an overinflated pricetag. Will have to wait for depreciation to kick in.

Glad some one finally agrees with me on that :P They really have to be driven to be appreciated (kind of like a R35 GTR i suppose). Also the rev match down shift works perfectly. I thought it would be shit but Nissan pulled it off.

Lol Hamish, obviously those ones look great, i just ment in stock form, for an expensive new car (mate payed $70k for his i believe) they aren't exactly the greatest looking in stock form. To the untrained eye they look fairly similar to a 350Z.

    • To be fair passengers who aren't silly and have been in proper fast cars have often been pretty impressed once you hit 4th gear
    • I suppose that's true. Barring almost any situation, I'll never sell so what the market does is kind of irrelevant to me. It's possible I'd make most of my money back. That spreadsheet I mentioned? Maybe I could make back more than what the car's total costs thus far are, but the parts and all that is possibly a different story... Thanks for reading. It was certainly a good moment and just makes the ties to the car that much stronger. It's exciting that the option will be there to bring it over, however I have some plans with a shop that may end up keeping the car there longer, not sure. Coupled with the fact I want to move there and haven't solidified any path yet. So in a way, it feels like I'm in a limbo state that is uncertain; time will tell.
    • No worries, everything worked out in the end. I just wanted to make the point that it doesn't matter where it comes from (I.E Australia), it can be broken or improperly built. I would still purchase from these companies in the future. B2R - Not certain how that finished, this was on a car I wired a few things and street tuned. I know the owner ended up shipping the motor back to Australia for investigation. Hopefully some of it is covered under warranty.  Turbosmart - I always pressure test everything that goes on my car. It's a habit from my career in oil and gas. I run two 40mm's and both had major leaks from the actuator to exhaust portion through the shaft. I returned both, they shipped me back two and one was leaking and the other had a 38mm top (40mm gate with 38mm actuator cap, no idea how that happens). Eventually after a lot of back and forth I found myself with two non-leaking gates. I believe this happens a lot more then people would like to believe but you would never know if you don't pressure test them prior to installation. Crank Motorsport - Issued a full refund and let me keep the seat rails. I turned them into scrap metal for other projects. GKTech - Shipped me out a replacement and asked that I modify it as per my idea and that they would do the same for a future revision. ATP - Can just needed a large shim to bolt up properly.  Haltech - They started an actual proper Beta channel for firmware's a few months back and stopped using the general public for testing. I'm now much happier.  Speedtek - f**k Speedtek. I would love to watch them burn.
    • I've got a Turbosmart wastegate, ATP catch can, many GK Tech parts and Haltech everything. Everything's been perfect, sorry to hear your experience wasn't the same
